Enniscrone Golf Club
December Newsletter 2016
Thanks
This final newsletter for 2016 wishes a Happy Christmas and best of luck for 2017 to all our members and their families. 2016
was a very successful year for the club. We hope you all enjoyed the golf and friendship and thanks to all for your support
during the year.
Great thanks goes to our Captain Emmett Loftus and Lady Captain Anne Helly O Connor for guiding the club so seamlessly
and effectively throughout the year. Thanks also to President Richie Cloonan and Lady President Jacqueline Kilcullen for
proudly and ably representing our club. Thanks to all Council members and their sub committees for their work in all the
diverse areas of the club. Thanks to our faithful staff for their careful work and commitment.
Thanks to all the members who responded to requests made in the newsletter over the year. The newsletter can be effective
in communication between Council and Members but it is important it is a two-way process. Good feedback from members
allows Council to consider the various opinions, suggestions or grievances of members and will allow Council make more
considered decisions. It is very important to have a good relationship between management and members in order to avoid
any misunderstanding or confusion that might arise. This will help to increase the efficiency of how the club is run. Feedback,
positive or negative will help to evaluate all information before a decision is made.
Thanks to Niall Kilroy for providing the Questions & Answers on golf rules in all the issues during the year. His judicious choice
of questions have hopefully helped you out on the fairway over the summer.
Thanks to Lady Captain Anne for supplying the photos from the various events throughout the year.
Thanks to Joe Quinn for course information and photos.
Thanks to Maureen L Dodd for items and photos from the Junior section of the club.
Thanks to Keith O Neill whose idea it was to begin the regular newsletter process and setting up the structure at the outset.

15th Green with sod removed before works
15th Green after works
Thanks to Joe Quinn, Clyde Johnson, Enda Mulrooney, Ciaran Sweeney and Course Staff; Joe Cawley and all the Volunteers
for their professional work in completing the project on the 15th green. It will achieve the objectives of fairness, more pin
positions and playability. There is now relief on the green; if your ball is inside the orange line on the green, you may lift and
place the ball on the green outside the line at the nearest point of relief, not nearer the hole. If your ball is outside the
orange line you must go to the dropping zone on the right.

Greetings and a belated thank you from the States; I wanted to
thank the club for a great visit to Enniscrone during the Coyne Cup
in September. The course is unbelievable, feeling like I could lose
directions within the dunes, not knowing where the ocean was, a
brilliant design. Scott Wilson, PGA Streamsong Resort, Florida.

The large increase in NO-Returns in our club for 2016 is significant. Only
returned cards are used in calculating CSS. If all cards were returned then
CSS would be higher and fewer people’s handicap would be cut; on the
other hand some people who do not wish to have their handicap
increased will receive 0.1 back even though they do not want it.
Is it because the player knows he will not receive 0.1 back that he does
not bother to put in his card due to the one shot increase restriction
allowed in one year? All cards should be returned whether complete or
not – it is a condition of entry to the competition; simple as that.
Co. Armagh GC and Donabate GC have both submitted a motion to GUI
seeking approval of CONGU to change the restriction to 2 strokes in a
calendar year, effective if possible for the 2017 season. Their rationale is
based on the fact that at a time when participation in golf is diminishing,
there is evidence the imposition of a one stroke increase is having a
negative impact on participation. The GUI was the only member of the
Union to have made the change to the one stroke restriction.
On the following pages you will see some statistics on the analysis of
competitions played in 2016 as compared to 2015. Probably one of the
most interesting aspects is the rank changes of the second hole following
the restructuring of the green. For the ladies the rank changed from 1
(most difficult) to 6; for the men the rank of the same hole changed from
9 to 11. Otherwise the consistency from one year to the next is distinct
with the 13th definitely the Birdie hole of the course.

3. A and B are playing a match on a handicap basis. B has the
honour on the 1st hole. Both players have 5's on the hole but
A receives a handicap stroke and therefore has a net 4. Does
A take the honour on the 2nd hole.
3 Yes, A has the honour on 2nd hole since he win the
hole.
2. A competitor who started on the 10th hole returns a card
with scores for the 1st nine holes recorded in the boxes for
the 2nd nine holes, and vice versa. Thus scores from some
holes are recorded lower than scores actually taken. Is he
disqualified?
Answers
4. He can not brush away the sand; sand and soil are
loose impediments on the putting green, BUT NOT
ELSEWHERE. If the brushed away the sand he
incurred a two stroke penalty.
1. A competitor signs his card in the space provided for the
marker's signature . Is he in breach of the rules. If so what is
the penalty?
2. Disqualified. Scores from holes incorrect.
1. No penalty. The card has been signed correctly.
4. A player is on the fringe beside the green (not on the
green). There is sand behind his ball, from a nearby bunker .
Can the player brush away the sand?
