Uniform Policy Whole School Students should take a pride in their appearance. We expect all our students to be smartly and sensibly dressed with clothing as designated on the School Uniform List, which is in the Parents’ Handbook. This should be fully and strictly adhered to. Students’ clothes and all possessions must be clearly named. Students should wear full school uniform at all times in school and also on their journeys to and from school, unless, in an exceptional circumstance, permission has been granted by the Director of Lower School or the Deputy Headmaster to do otherwise. The school is ultimately responsible for deciding whether or not any item is suitable. Parents may request advice from a Form Tutor if they are in any doubt about the acceptability of any item. Uniform worn at school must be clean, neat, and in good repair. Collars must be buttoned, and ties pulled up to the collar. Blouse / shirt tails must be tucked in. Jumper or shirt / blouse sleeves should not be rolled up. Girls’ skirts should fall to the knee. Boys’ trousers should be worn at the waist. School blazers should be worn at all times, including the journey to and from school. In all sections of the school, only a school hat and school scarf may be worn. Outdoor apparel of any kind is not to be worn indoors. For girls, hair longer than shoulder length must be tied back. Boys’ hair should be smart, off the face, over the ear and off the collar. Any enhancements to girls’ hair should be discreet and natural-looking. Dramatic cuts or colours may result in a student being sent home. Girls' hair accessories (e.g. hair bands, clips, slides, scrunchies or hair bobbles) should be maroon, or match the colour of hair (i.e. black on black, brown on brown, pale on blonde, not black on blonde). Decorative items, such as flowers and so on, are not permitted. No jewellery is permitted except for one pair of small (no larger than 5mm in diameter), plain, silver, gold or pearl ear studs for girls, worn centrally in the ear lobe, and a necklace cross and chain. Make-up must not be worn by students. This includes nail varnish. No badges are permitted other than those recognised by the school. Non-regulation items may be confiscated in accordance with School Policy. P.E. kit should not be worn to and from school. Students should always change out of P.E. kit into school uniform at the end of the day in order to travel home, the only exception being when they are being picked up immediately by a parent. However, hair should be tied back for safety reasons in Science and Sport lessons. Jewellery is permitted but should be discreet and in keeping with formal dress. In addition to one small pair of (no later than 5mm in diameter) ear studs for girls worn centrally in the ear lobe, a simple necklace and wrist watch is also permitted. Make-up and nail varnish may be worn by sixth form girls as a privilege but this must be discreet and natural in appearance. Leggings are not acceptable uniform and must not be worn. Summer Dress Regulations Students should come to school smartly dressed at all times and in all weather. If the weather is hot, the school may decide to put Summer Dress Regulations in place, but this will happen after students’ arrival at school. The announcement will be made by the Deputy Head Teacher via the Daily Notices taking into consideration the forecast weather conditions for the day, typically in extreme heat (25*C+). The Form Tutor will then pass on the message to the students during registration. Once the Summer Dress Regulations announcement has been made, students may remove blazer (and woollen jumper), remove tie and place in locker; shirts / blouses tucked in. Girls may wear short white socks as an alternative to long grey socks and tights throughout the Summer Term. Students must be dressed appropriately and fully once again for the journey home from school. They may need to be reminded of this as they depart from school / Twilight activities. Students are reminded to take care in the extreme heat. They should drink plenty of water and keep their head covered or wear sunglasses in broad sunlight or ideally keep out of the sun at its hottest. In all matters of student dress and appearance, the arbiter of what is acceptable is the Form Tutor, or the Director of Lower School, the Deputy Head Teacher or, ultimately, the Head Teacher Policy Review and Approval Review interval: 2 years Review term: Autumn (Term 1) Reviewed by: Head Teacher Approved by: Governors’ Education Committee First approved: Last approved: Next review: April 2013 August 2015 Autumn 2016 A copy of this policy and other relating policies can be obtained from the School Office or downloaded from the school website site in the 'Document Library' section.
