Bristol, Aerospace
“As university fees in England have
increased so much in recent years,
many of my friends have been put
off going to university. Some are
even studying abroad to avoid a
large student debt.
“I was eager to get into the
workplace and make my own
way in the world, so the higher
apprenticeship route suits me as
it will enable me to do this while I
study.
I was keen to look at other ways of
getting into engineering - not only
due to the cost but also because I
wanted to learn engineering in a
practical way rather than purely in a
classroom setting. I’m now working
alongside 700 colleagues in the
aerospace sector, developing my
skills on real projects for clients such
as Airbus and Rolls-Royce. I’m really
happy with my decision!”
I applied to over fifteen
apprenticeship schemes. Due to the
nature of work and the breadth
of disciplines, Atkins was one of
my top choices so I was delighted
to be offered a place and am now
studying towards a foundation
degree in mechanical engineering
while gaining valuable hands-on
experience.”

“I’m currently taking a higher
apprenticeship in project
management, working in the rail
communications systems division.
Based in Euston Tower, I’m
already managing my first project Hammersmith Lifts Refurbishment
- and, while it’s a small project, I’m
really enjoying the responsibility
and chance to learn more about
different areas of the business and
how they work together. I currently
spend one week a month at college
and the work is pretty intensive but
the team are really understanding
that I’m still a trainee and there’s
plenty of support and advice to help
me succeed.”

“I applied for an apprenticeship
with Atkins because I thought it
would be a good opportunity to
move into a new sector.
“If you’re looking for an
opportunity to earn and learn a
career with Atkins is definitely
worth pursuing. Learning does
not only take place in college or
university but also on the job. I
believe lessons learned from work
experience are much more valuable
than in full time education.
I’m currently training as a telecoms
engineer, working in the rail
communications systems division
and hope to go on to achieve
full chartership status with the
Institution of Engineering and
Technology. I really enjoy the variety
of my work, locations and projects
and the balance between working
on site and across different Atkins
offices is great too.”
My business unit gave me one day
off a week for college and are now
sponsoring me to do a part time
degree at university.”

and chance

more about
different
areas of the
