Congratulations to all VCE students on their
excellent results achieved in 2016
Our staff are very proud of our students’ achievements and we wish all students the very best as they
embark on their chosen pathways post Year 12. These pathways will be wide and varied and reflective
of the diversity of our school community.
Above all, the staff at The University High School believe
passionately in developing the character of students who
pass through our doors. We believe that we have instilled
in each of our Year 12 students the capacity to think with
reason, understanding and empathy. We are very proud
of their achievements.
• One student achieved a perfect study score of 50 for
Psychology (NB: one Year 12 student received a 50
for Biology when they were in Year 11 2015).
VCE (ATAR) data for University High School for 2016:
• From The Elizabeth Blackburn School of Sciences
(EBSS) cohort of 63 students, 37% had an ATAR of
95 and above and 59% received an ATAR of 90 and
above.
• This year 240 students applied for an ATAR score.
32% of the cohort received an ATAR of 90 or above
and 55% received an ATAR score of 80 or above.
Our Dux for the school is Alexei Sopov who scored a 99.9
ATAR. He was an EBSS student, but also part of UHS at
large.
• Five students received a score of 99 and above:
99.90, 99.70, 99.65, 99.10, 99.00
Congratulations to all Year 12 students graduating in 2016.

Competitions
The Australian Cancer and Health
Sciences Competition
The Australian Cancer and Health Sciences Competition
took place at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI)
on the 27th of October. Five students from University
High School – Jessica Law, Alessia Pierotti, Momoka
Yoshida, Josh Catallo and Tara Keshavarz, completed
the day-long seminar which ended in a 25 question
multiple choice competition, against 75 other year 10
students from around Victoria.
The seminar included guest speakers from WEHI and
Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre who spoke to us about
cancer, their research, the new ways of treating cancer
and working in science. We also had a tour of the WEHI
laboratories and spoke to lots of students who have
finished or are completing bachelor degrees and PhDs
in science and biomedicine.
After the organisers calculated the results, we found
out that both a girl from John Monash Science School
and I had perfect scores on the test. This meant that we
had to do a tie breaker round consisting of very difficult
short answer questions. They marked our answers and
announced that I had come in 2nd place by a margin of
2.5 marks.
Both of us received our prizes, a week-long internship
at WEHI as well as a unique pineapple ‘trophy’. It was an
interesting day which we all enjoyed and we learnt a lot
about cancer and the research involved in treating it.

2016 Annual Giving Appeal
We invite you to join us in supporting The University high school 2016 Annual giving Appeal as we continue to enhance
the unique atmosphere of our school.
our vision for the future is to stay focused on placing students at the heart of an outstanding learning environment.
Therefore, a key priority for the next phase of the building program is the development of three specialised facilities:
f a Sports Stadium f a new Library f a Renaissance Centre
Our vision is to create contemporary spaces for students to reflect, explore and collaborate with their learning. The
Library and the Renaissance Centre will enable generations of students to access and engage with languages, literature,
humanities, books and digital resources.
The Sports Stadium will generate a space for students to physically thrive at school. Many of our students now reside in
the inner-city so we are committed to creating a much needed facility for physical activity and engagement. We envision
this facility to be available for the wider community to use after school hours.
our appeals in the past have been outstanding with the school community of parents, teachers and alumni donating
more than $100,000 to the Building Fund. This has contributed to the building of the bridge connecting north and south
Wings and renovating the classrooms in the West Wing.
A gift to the 2016 Appeal will enable generations of students to engage with their learning in outstanding facilities.
We encourage you to consider making a gift to support us with stimulating the learning environment of generations to
come. Donations can be made via the ‘give now box’ on the school website (unihigh.vic.edu.au), by credit card using the
form below or by inserting your donation into the 2016 Annual giving Appeal envelope.
Every gift makes a difference, no matter the amount

Thank you for the year in Sport
2016 has been another great year in Sport for the School. A total of 13 different Sports have been on offer throughout
the year across all age groups, plus the opportunity to participate in Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country running.
The sporting program plays a vital role in contributing to the diversity of programs on offer at the School and continues
to provide a great deal of enjoyment for students as well as opportunities to form new relationships, make new friends
and experience the value of being part of a team.
This year saw 34 teams win at Division level, 8 win at Regional level and 2 win at State level

Well done to each and every student who participated in and assisted with Sport this year. As a school we represented
ourselves proudly and in the right spirit, with students demonstrating respect for opponents and graciously accepting
both victory and defeat. Thank you finally, to all the staff who gave up their time to attend trainings and sport days and
made the year in Sport possible. Well done to all and we look forward to 2017.

Table Tennis
Year 8 Boys Table Tennis State Final victory
“It was a great experience, I had the opportunity to play
against many opposing schools and learn different things
that made me improve faster in Table Tennis. It made me
also realise that having a team where everybody is at a
good stable level is the best team. It is better than having
a team that only has one or two great players. So I say
that Table Tennis is also a team game and this shows that
if you play as a team and work together you can have a
successful path to victory.”

Year 10 Work Experience
The past two weeks have seen our Year 10
students out and about in the world of work
for their week of Work Experience. I have been
receiving glowing reports on our students from
employers all over Melbourne, as students found
out what it was like to work in their chosen career.
We have had students in all industries and occupations
from A to Z, including hospitals (some even getting to
see a theatre in action), lawyers (with many being able
to attend court proceedings), primary schools, scientific
research, civil engineering, retail, finance, laboratory
work, pharmacies, electricians, IT, fashion, hospitality,
fitness, animal care, allied health, university education,
floristry, dentistry, youth work, graphic design, marketing,
motor mechanic and architecture.
A huge congratulations to all Year 10s on the fantastic
enthusiasm and work ethic shown during their
placements. Hopefully this has given some ideas and
more information about future career goals. It’s also
a good time to remind our current Year 9s to start
thinking about where they would like to go next year as
applications for many of the more popular placements
must be submitted before the end of this year.
Please see me if you’d like any more information on the
Work Experience program at UHS.

Galileo students present at conference
History Teachers’ Association of Victoria Kids’ Conference
On Tuesday the 30th of November, Year 9 students,
(pictured from left), Ruby Foley, Isabella Gonzalez,
Abdurahman Esmael, and Charlie Paatsch presented at
the History Teachers’ Association of Victoria’s annual
Kids’ Conference.
Taking place in the Australian Catholic University, the
conference’s focus centred on how technology can
improve learning in the Humanities classroom from the
students’ perspectives. Abdu, Ruby, Isabella and Charlie
presented on a day they spent making Melbourne
tourism advertisements in the first week of this term.
They discussed the aims and layout of the day and
entertained the audience with the funny, informative
and creative finished products. The students had put
in considerable effort to prepare for the conference
outside of school hours and the results paid off with a
very impressive presentation that wowed the lecture
theatre filled with teachers, academics and other
secondary students.
