Breast surgery is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures, carried out on women who wish to increase, reduce, uplift, or alter the shape of their breasts. Breast surgery helps to restore proportion to your body, giving you the boost in body confidence you deserve. Breast augmentation Breast reduction Breast augmentation is an operation in which an implant is inserted to increase the size and fullness of the breasts. It’s one of the most popular forms of cosmetic surgery in the UK and has changed the lives of many women, increasing their self-esteem and confidence. Unlike the image commonly portrayed in the media, breast augmentation can be just a subtle change, boosting the contours of your body by adding volume and curves. Breast reduction is one of the best cosmetic plastic surgery operations in terms of changing the lives of those who have it done. Many say after the operation that they ‘wish they’d had it done years ago’. Choosing a breast enlargement is a very personal decision. Some women wish to restore volume and firmness to their breasts after weight loss or pregnancy. Others may wish to boost their confidence in their appearance and when wearing certain clothes. Whatever your personal situation and how it may be affecting you, our medical team can provide expert care, information and advice to help you reach the right decision for you. Large breasted women can experience considerable teasing, as well as physical and emotional distress. In addition to psychological trauma, large breasts are associated with neck, shoulder and back pain caused simply by their weight. Soreness and raw skin under the breasts is common. It is usual for those with larger breasts to wear loose clothing to disguise their figures. Breast reduction surgery can be a solution to these issues as it involves removing excess tissue to reshape your breasts and achieve the smaller bust you desire. If you believe that breast augmentation might be the procedure for you then book a consultation and we will discuss with you: the results you are hoping to see; the procedure and the recovery process. 8 9 Cosmetic Surgery At The Holly Private Hospital Breast uplift Many women, following the birth of their children, find that their breasts have drooped and lost both elasticity and volume. Some are unlucky enough to have developed low breasts from the start. There are also those who have lost large amounts of weight leaving empty loose skin. In a normal ‘average’ breast, the nipple is at the level of the mid-point of the upper arm and is above the level of the crease under the breast. If the breast has been stretched by age, pregnancy, breast feeding or weight gain, then the breast and the nipple will be at a lower level. Also in some, the nipple naturally points in a downward direction rather than forwards. Breast size also varies and may need adjusting. A mastopexy (breast uplift) lifts the breast to a position above the crease by removing skin under and around the nipple and positions the nipple facing directly forwards. After a breast uplift the ‘size’ of the breast is the same as before since nothing is added or removed. However it is common for patients to think that the breast is smaller because they don’t need such a large ‘cup size’ to cope with all the excess skin. Some women choose to have a breast uplift and a breast augmentation at the same time. Your consultant will be able to advise on the best procedure to help you get the results you want. Body contouring procedures offer a range of solutions to sculpt, reshape, tighten or reduce parts of your body that may be causing unhappiness and help you make the changes you desire. Liposuction is an excellent solution for removing stubborn and frustrating areas of fat that, despite efforts with diet and exercise, just do not seem to shift. Common areas that liposuction has proved effective at treating include the thighs, hips, knees and tummy. It’s important to note that although the procedure removes fat it does not tighten the skin or remove cellulite. So, a careful assessment is needed to make sure that the area is suitable and there won’t be loose skin at the end of the procedure. Bear in mind that if a larger quantity of fat is removed from the stomach, you may need to consider a tummy tuck to remove any excess skin and create the firm, flat stomach you desire. Tummy tuck and mini tummy tuck There are many reasons why people choose to have a tummy tuck. Pregnancy, ageing or significant weight loss can leave you with excess skin or a sagging tummy which no amount of exercise is going to shift. An abdominoplasty or tummy tuck can help solve this issue by removing excess skin and fatty deposits to give you a flatter, firmer appearance. A tummy tuck is not a weight loss operation. If you are someone carrying unwanted weight then surgery will not be effective and might even be dangerous. The ideal candidate for a tummy tuck is one who has achieved the weight they are happy with but just want to rid themselves of loose skin and tighten up their abdominal muscles to obtain a flat contour. If you are considering a tummy tuck or mini tummy tuck it’s important that you are in good physical health and are comfortable with your current weight. Neither procedure is suitable for someone looking to lose weight. 12 13 Cosmetic Surgery At The Holly Private Hospital Male chest reduction (gynaecomastia) Male breasts, also casually referred to as ‘moobs’ or ‘man boobs’ are a common and embarrassing problem. Sometimes it is due to being overweight but in many cases it is simply unfortunate deposits of fat which can’t be shifted by weight loss. Rather than disguise the condition with baggy clothes, many men choose to have chest reduction surgery because it creates a flatter, firmer and more masculine chest shape. Not only are these men delighted with their improved appearance, they fit better in clothes and have increased self-esteem. 14 Labia reduction (labiaplasty) The labia minora are the inner lips of the vagina. They come in all shapes and sizes as all women are different. If you feel uncomfortable with the size and shape of your labia then reduction surgery could help. Your labia may be causing discomfort during activities such as cycling or walking, or during sexual intercourse. It may be that the appearance makes you feel unhappy or self-conscious. Whether you have always felt this way, or there has been a change with age or after childbirth, surgery could help. A labia reduction is performed under general anaesthetic and therefore will most likely require an overnight stay in hospital. The exact nature of the operation depends on the desired result and your surgeon’s recommendation but labiaplasty involves cutting away the unwanted labia tissue to the desired shape. Any cuts that are made are carefully placed to prevent painful scarring along the rim of the labia, and are closed with dissolving stitches. You might be self-conscious about a feature such as a saggy neck or eyelids or a large nose which makes your face look unbalanced, or would just prefer to look younger. Either way, we offer a range of facial surgical and non-surgical procedures to give you the look you want. Nose reshaping Rhinoplasty is the operation to change the size, shape and appearance of the nose. This type of surgery is extremely precise and demands much expertise. It can change the lives of those who have hidden behind an ugly nose and reveal attractive faces which were previously ignored. Rhinoplasty has been carried out successfully for many years and techniques are constantly evolving and results improving. The vast majority of patients undergoing rhinoplasty gain a feeling of increased self-confidence with improvement in their body image and a softer, more attractive facial appearance. In the vast majority of cases, men and women alike wish to have a normal, average nose. 16 17 Cosmetic Surgery At The Holly Private Hospital Eyelid reduction (blepharoplasty) As we get older the very thin skin around our eyelids stretches. Fine lines and creases develop due to the activity of facial muscles in smiling and squinting. Some people naturally age more quickly than others but exposure to sunlight and smoking can cause premature ageing. As we age, the skin on our face and neck begins to sag from a loss of muscle tone. A facelift is an operation to tighten the skin on the face, producing a firmer and smoother appearance. Excess skin on the eyes can also cause hoods over the upper lids or prominent folds in the lower lids. Excess fat can give the appearance of puffiness and bags, and in certain light, the appearance of dark rings. • the sagging turkey neck Many people requesting an eyelid reduction feel they look tired, older, stern or less approachable. When these problems are corrected by a ‘blepharoplasty’, the results can be dramatic. However, it is usual for others not to notice that you have had an operation. More commonly they will comment on how well you look. 18 Facelift A facelift can correct signs of ageing in a number of places including: • the jowls of excess skin along the jaw line • the fold from the nose to the corner of the mouth (the ‘nasolabial fold’) • the fold from the mouth to the jowl (the ‘marionette line’). A facelift operation can reverse years of ageing by smoothing out excess skin of the neck, under the chin, along the jaw line and across the cheek. Fat is removed from below the jawline and under the chin where it is unwanted but preserved and repositioned from the jowl to the cheek to restore volume where it has been lost. It leaves only faintly visible fine lines so that others will not know the reason that you ‘look so well’. 19 Cosmetic Surgery At The Holly Private Hospital Ear reshaping (also called otoplasty and pinnaplasty) Overly large or protruding ears can lead to lower self-esteem and self-consciousness. Corrective surgery gives people everlasting results and a renewed confidence in their appearance. It is a short surgery with an overnight stay in hospital and most people return to work two weeks after surgery. Brow lift A brow lift tightens the forehead or eye areas. It does not however remove bags or excess skin from the eyelids. (This is best treated with an eyelid reduction - blepharoplasty). It provides a smoother and softer appearance to the forehead and can be performed with a facelift and eyelid reduction (blepharoplasty) for an overall improvement on the entire face. Chin refinement Chin refinement surgery is carried out on both men and women who feel that their chin looks too large or too small and not in proportion to the rest of their face. Sometimes a person may be considering nose reshaping due to concerns about their profile when in fact it is the profile of their chin that is weak and increasing its size will balance the overall facial profile. There are various procedures that your consultant can carry out to refine the chin, for example: removing some excess tissue; reducing the bone slightly; inserting an implant to increase the size of the chin; or more complicated procedures such as resetting bones. A browlift can also be produced as part of a non-surgical procedure using anti-wrinkle injections (Botox). That’s where non-surgical cosmetic treatments come in, perfectly bridging the gap between anti-ageing products and surgery. We offer a range of non-surgical cosmetic procedures all carried out by our fully qualified cosmetic surgeons. Injectable fillers Injectable fillers are a non-surgical treatment to ‘fill in’ or smooth out facial lines and wrinkles making it a popular treatment to help create a more youthful appearance. They are also effective for increasing fullness to narrow lips and enhancing sunken cheeks. The areas best treated are: • Forehead lines - horizontal frown lines • Glabeller lines - vertical frown lines between the eyebrows • Crow’s feet or laughter lines - radiating away from the eyes • Naso-labial lines - furrows running between mouth and nose • Marionette lines - lines running down from the corners of the mouth • Lips - by creating a fuller, more defined shape • Facial scars - either from old injuries or acne scarring • Cheeks - to add fullness especially following illness. Injectable fillers are administered by way of a series of small injections, for which no anaesthetic is required. There are many ‘fillers’ available and the effects can be either temporary or permanent, depending on the type of filler. Your consultant will advise you on which type of injection is most suitable to meet your requirements. Treatment time varies between 30 minutes to an hour. Treatment and recovery is quick. The area may be a little swollen and tender for a short while afterwards but you can usually resume your normal activities immediately after treatment. 22 23 Cosmetic Surgery At The Holly Private Hospital Anti-wrinkle injections Wrinkles are caused by using our facial muscles to smile or frown. The overlying skin will form creases over time. Anti-wrinkle injections (Botox) are a nonsurgical treatment to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. It is also used to prevent excessive sweating. Very few of us have perfect skin which is perhaps why anti-wrinkle injections are the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment performed on millions of people worldwide. The ideal areas to be treated are: • Forehead lines - horizontal frown lines • Glabeller lines - vertical frown lines between the eyebrows • Crow’s feet or laughter lines - radiating away from the eyes. Treatment involves an injection directly into the facial muscles to block nerve transmission making them relax. The overlying skin becomes smoother and unwrinkled. The effects usually last from three to six months but can last longer after two or three treatments. The treatment is non-invasive with virtually no recovery time. You can resume your normal activities immediately. 24 25 Cosmetic Surgery At The Holly Private Hospital Next steps Your initial consultation Before you go ahead with your procedure you will have a full no-obligation consultation with your chosen cosmetic surgeon.
