Dear Parents/Guardians
As part of your son’s/daughter’s English studies, the Department has organised a trip to the city of Canterbury on Friday, 2nd December 2016.
Canterbury was the destination for Chaucer’s pilgrims in The Canterbury Tales and is an important religious centre for the Christian Church.
The Canterbury Tales and Chaucer are central to our module on language development and the activities we have arranged are designed to
enhance and develop students’ interest in, and familiarity with, the world of Geoffrey Chaucer. In visiting such an historic and religious city
we also hope to raise awareness of the significance of pilgrimage and its importance in the Church with obvious relevance to Religious
Education and History.
The students will have a guided tour of Canterbury Cathedral and will be taken to ‘The Canterbury Tales’ – a ‘Jorvik’-style walk-through
recreation of Pilgrimage and storytelling.
The English Department has organised trips to Canterbury for students for more than twelve years and the visits have been consistently
enjoyable and worthwhile. Canterbury is a beautiful and historic city with much to interest any visitor.
In order to finance such a visit we need a contribution of £30.00 to include all admissions and transport for the day. Ideally we would like to
have all donations paid by ParentPay by Friday, 18th November. If this will be difficult for you, please contact me to discuss the possible
options. We will leave school at 8.45 am, registering on the coaches, and should arrive in Canterbury at approximately 11.30 am. We will
leave Canterbury at 4.00 pm, arriving at school at about 6.45 pm. Pupils will be accompanied by staff during all the activities, but, once these
are complete, they will be allowed some free time in small groups to look at some of the other places of interest in the town and to do some
shopping before we regroup and return to the coaches. They will, of course, be provided with maps and given directions.
Canterbury is a compact, walled and largely pedestrianised city with many places to eat and excellent shops. Students may take a packed
lunch or, if they prefer, may take advantage of the numerous fast-food outlets to be found there.
I hope you will be able to give your permission for your son/daughter’s attendance as I am sure it will provide a thoroughly enjoyable and
valuable experience. If you wish your son/daughter to go on this trip (we hope the entire year group will be able to go) please send the reply
slip to the School Office as soon as possible and indicate on the slip that you have paid by ParentPay.
Yours sincerely
J G Latham
