“He happens t o be her personal hero,” t he mining bigwig and respect ed philant hropist
said of his wif e, Janelle Munt z Lassonde.
He would not discuss t he part y f urt her, calling it “a very privat e f amily af f air.”
T he Lassondes, bot h dressed sharply f or t he occasion, arrived short ly bef ore 7 p.m. in a
chauf f eured SUV.
T hey sat in t he Palais Royale’s f ront lounge as guest s began t o t rickle in lat e Monday
evening.
A crew of unif ormed valet drivers st ood at t he ent rance, collect ing cars — many of
t hem luxury vehicles — f rom guest s who were ushered t o t he red-carpet ed ent rance,
where t heir names were checked of f on a list of 190 people.
Inside, guest s mingled and f east ed on goat cheese and apple t ruf f les, t una t art ar, crab
cake lollipops and cedar-smoked duck breast .

blue jeans, while ot hers wore high heels and chic dresses.
T he det ails of such celebrit y appearances are t ypically kept hush-hush, but booking
agencies est imat e pop st ars like Cher, Mariah and St ing will show up f or a price t ag
ranging f rom $500,000 t o $1 million.
“If you’re t alking about St ing, I wouldn’t be surprised if was $1 million,” said Joshua Gair,
CEO of Impact Ent ert ainment Services.

Lassonde, 64, is a legend in t he mining indust ry who amassed his f ort une invest ing in
gold and minerals and as co-f ounder of t he Franco-Nevada Mining Corp. and, lat er,
president of Newmont Mining Corp.
In 2003, Lassonde received an Order of Canada and was dubbed one of t he count ry’s
f oremost expert s in mining and precious met als whose “social commit ment is as obvious
as his business success.”

He has also f unded academic buildings at Ecole Polyt echnique in Mont real, est ablished
t he Lassonde New Vent ure Development Cent er at t he Universit y of Ut ah and serves as
Chairman of t he Musée Nat ional des Beaux-Art s du Québec.
