Counting On By Ones and Tens
Purpose of Strategy: Counting On By Ones or Tens empowers students to fluently add using a deep understanding of
place value. Students use a hundred board or scrolling chart to visualize the adding of tens and ones.
Materials: Hundred board
Steps:
1. Teacher provides student with hundred board.
2. Teacher gives student addition problem.
3. Student locates one of numbers on the hundred board.
4. Student adds the other number by skip counting by tens and ones.
5. Student determines and explains the sum using the hundred board.
6. Teacher explicitly shows how using the hundred board and the addition algorithm are related.
7. Student uses the hundred board while simultaneously calculating sums using the traditional algorithm.
