The p r o p e r t y i s l o c a t e d a t t h e 5,500 f o o t e l e v a t i o n a t
t h e head of L i t t l e Joe Creek, 16 miles northeast of Smithers.
The L i t t l e J o e group o f 7 c l a i m s was owned from p r i o r t o
1922 by Tommy King and N a r t i n Cain ( c a n e ) ( ~ e a n ) . The worki n g s i n 1922 c o n s i s t e d of open c u t s and a 100 f o o t d r i f t a d i t
on t h e main showing. A shipment o f 5 t o n s o f o r e was r e p o r t e d . By 1924 t h e a d i t had been extended t o 172 f e e t . A
Spokane s y n d i c a t e o p t i o n e d t h e c l a i m s i n t h e f a l l o f 1924 but
a p p a r e n t l y l i t t l e development work was done. An o p t i o n was
a c q u i r e d i n 1926 by Henry Lee Nessner on t h e L i t t l e J o e and
s e v e r a l o t h e r p r o p e r t i e s i n t h e v i c i n i t y . A winze was sunk
from t h e a d i t a t a p o i n t 130 f e e t from t h e p o r t a l and 11 t o n s
o f o r e mined. A c r o s s c u t a d i t begun i n 1929 by t h e owners
was s u b s e q u e n t l y extended t o a l e n g t h o f 96 f e e t . I n 1938
t h e p r o p e r t y mas owned by A. Elmstead and t h e T. King and
Id. Cain E s t a t e s . A shipment o f 6 t o n s o f o r e was made t o t h e
Dept. o f Mines Sampling P l a n t a t P r i n c e Xupert d u r i n g t h e
year.

DESCRIPTION OF DEPOSIT
The c o u n t r y r o c k s a r e s h e a r e d and a l t e r e d r h y o l i t e t u f f s and
f l o w s at t h e b a s e o f t h e upper v o l c a n i c d i v i s i o n o f t h e Razelton
group.
The main showing i s exposed i n an a d i t d r i v e n i n a n o r t h e r l g
d i r e c t i o n f o r 172 f e e t . A f l a t - l y i n g zone o f q u a r t z l e n s e s and
s t r i n g e r s , w i t h a t o t a l width up t o 4 f e e t , i s exposed f o r a
l e n g t h o f about 130 f e e t . The q u a r t z c o n t a i n s t e t r a h e d r i t e and
some g a l e n a , s p h a l e r i t e , and c h a l c o p y r i t e . The zone s t r i k e s
n o r t h 65 d e g r e e s west and d i p s 15 t o 20 d e g r e e s n o r t h ; t h e
q u a r t z l e n s e s range from 1 t o 1 6 i n c h e s wide.
A c r o s s c u t a d i t h a s been d r i v e n f o r 96 f e e t a t a p o i n t about
100 f e e t below and 400 f e e t southwest of t h e main showing. I n
t h e r o o f , n e a r t h e f a c e , a s h e a r zone 1 f o o t wide s t r i k e s n o r t h
32 d e g r e e s e a s t and d i p s 20 d e g r e e s west. T h i s zone c o n t a i n s
masses o f q u a r t z up t o 2 i n c h e s wide, c o n t a i n i n g mst and
d i s s e m i n a t e d t e t r a h e d r i t e . It i s n o t c l e a r whether t h i s i s t h e
same zone a s t h e main showing.

Recorded production f o r t h e period 1927-1938 t o t a l s 26
t o n s of ore. From t h i s o r e 15 ounces of gold, 6,727 ounces
of s i l v e r , 1,952 pounds of copper, 925 pounds of l e a d , and
1,843 pounds of zinc were recovered. Hanson (1924) reported
t h a t : "a shipment o f 5 tons a few years ago n e t t e d about
$500 a ton i n silver1'.

On t h e surface, about 200 f e e t above t h e main showing, a
picked sample from a v s i n a few inches wide i s r q o r t e d t o have
assayed: gold 2.3 ounces a ton; s i l v e r 94 ounces a ton; copper
3 per cent.
On t h e t r a i l , about a q u a r t e r of a mile e a s t of t h e n a i n
showing, a vein up t o 1 f o o t wide s t r i k e s north 50 degrees e a s t
and d i p s about 20 degrees northwest. The quartz contains limoni t e , t e t r a h e d r i t e , chalcopyrite, and a l i t t l e galena. A picked
sample i s reported t o have assayed: gold 1 ounce a ton; s i l v e r
42.0 ounces a ton. ( ~ a n g ,1940).
