Academic Skills Advice Basic Algebra Summary Writing Algebraic Expressions: Write a sentence in maths instead of English by assigning letters to numbers. Examples: π ο· A number divided by three: can be written as ο· Half of a number plus quarter of another number: can be written π π π + π π Simplifying Expressions: An algebraic expression can be simplified by collecting all the βlike termsβ together. Example: ο· Simplify the following: 3a (a β b) + 5ab (First remove the bracket then simplify). After multiplying out the brackets we have: 3a2 - 3ab + 5ab = 3a2 + 2ab Factorisation: An expression can be simplified by factorising it. This means taking out any common factors (i.e. putting the brackets back in). Example: ο· Simplify the following: 8π₯ + 3π₯π¦ + 9π₯π¦ β 4π₯ (First collect like terms then factorise). Collect like terms: Factorise: 4π₯ + 12π₯π¦ 4π₯(1 + 3π¦) Functions: Functions are another way of writing equations but using π(π₯) or π(π₯) etc instead of y. e.g.: π(π₯) = 3π₯ β 4 OR π: π₯ β 3π₯ β 4 They both mean the same thing (do 3 x π₯ then take away 4) Examples: ο· Given the function: π(π₯) = 5π₯ + 2 Find π(6) This just means wherever you see an π₯ replace it with a 6. π(π₯) = 5π₯ + 2 π(6) = 5 × 6 + 2 π(6) = 32 H Jackson 2011 / Academic Skills Except where otherwise noted, this work is licensed under http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/ 1
