Discussion was postponed to item 6 of the agenda, "Consideration and disposal of proposals for emendation of the International Code of Nomenclature of Bacteria and Viruses, and provisions for publication." Reports from the ad hoc committee on neotype cultures for Leptotrichia buccalis and Bacterionema matruchotii and from phage-typing subcommittees on the use of "lysotype" versus "phagotype" were referred to the International Committee on Nomenclature of Bacteria (ICNB). The status of the ad hoc committee on Bacterium anitratum and related organisms was questioned. This question was referred to the International Committee, with the recommendation that a separate taxonomic subcommittee be established to deal with the organisms. Minute 8. Approved as published.* p. 3 5 9 A discussion followed concerning the relationship between the International Committee on Bacteriological Nomenclature, its Judicial Couunission, and the International Association of Microbiological Societies. It was pointed out that the Judicial Commission is functioning as a subcommittee of the nomenclature Committee, with the task of developing and interpreting the Bacteriological Code subject to approval by the ICNB and sponsoring such publications, bulletins, or journals as may be deemed advfsable for the advancement of systematic bacteriology. The International Committee, on the other hand, has the functions of organizing meetings at each International Congress for Microbiology , considering and passing on all recommendations and Opinions of the Judicial Commission, and furthering bacterial systematics through the appointment of taxonomic subcommittees. To carry out increasing administrative functions of the International Connnittee between Congresses, and to provide for better communication between the ICNB and its parent organization (IAMS) it seemed desirable that the fCNB have an executive committee. The members discussed the possibility for the Judicial Commission to serve as such executive committee for the ICNB. The consensus + Downloaded from www.microbiologyresearch.org by IP: 88.99.165.207 On: Sat, 17 Jun 2017 19:29:44 SYSTEMATIC BACTERIOLOGY 67 was that the Commission was too large and specialized to carry on this function, and that it might be better that a smaller executive committee of the ICNB be established, consisting of the chairman and vice chairman of the ICNB, the two permanent secretaries, and the chairman of the Judicial Commission; and that the chairman of the ICNB be appointed an ex officio member of the Judicial Commission to provide liaison.
