HOOSIER OLYMPIANS
Indiana swimming and diving is rich with tradition, extending beyond the six
consecutive NCAA Championships and into the sport’s premiere stage, the
Olympics. Indiana has sent 56 swimmers and divers to the Olympic Games,
medaling in every Olympiad from 1952 to 1996. Twenty-six athletes have combined for 58 medals, winning 31 gold, 11 silver and 16 bronze. Doc Counsilman
coached the 1964 and 1976 US Olympic teams, and Hobie Billingsley coached
divers in the 1968, 1972, 1976 and 1980 Games. Billingsley served as a judge in
the 1992 and 1996 Games.

One of the top butterfliers in IU history, Kevin Berry won a gold medal for
Australia in the 200-meter butterfly at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. He was also an
Olympian in 1960 and finished sixth in the 200-meter butterfly. Berry earned AllAmerica accolades three times from 1966-68. He finished second in the 200yard butterfly and seventh in the 100-yard fly at the 1966 NCAA Championships.
In 1967, he took home a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly.

From 1974-77, Brian Bungum won two individual NCAA titles, taking first place
on the three-meter in 1976 and again in 1977. Bungum earned four All-America

Gary Conelly earned All-America honors on 14 occasions from 1970-73, 11 of
which were earned as a member of relays. At the 1973 NCAA Championships,
he led the Hoosiers to their first relay victory in four years as he swam the second leg of the 800-yard freestyle relay. He was a member of NCAA and Big Ten
championship teams every year from 1970-73.

Peder Dahlberg was the head coach for Spain at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.
A standout breaststroker, Dahlberg earned All-America honors from 1969-71
with the Hoosiers. He was also a member of three NCAA title teams. In 1971,
Dahlberg held the American Record in the 100-meter breaststroke and was part
of the World Record in the 400-meter medley relay.

Santiago Esteva competed for Spain at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City

in the 100-yard backstroke in 1971, Esteva was a four-time All-American and a
member of NCAA and Big Ten Championship teams in 1971, 1973 and 1974.

Gary Hall earned a total of three medals in three different Olympic Games from
1968-76. He earned a silver medal in the 400-meter IM at the 1968 Olympics in
Mexico City, secured a silver medal in the 200-meter butterfly at the 1972 Games
in Munich and walked away from the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal with a
bronze medal in the 100-meter butterfly. He carried the U.S. flag in the 1976
Olympic Games. One of the most decorated swimmers in the history of NCAA
swimming, Indiana’s Gary Hall earned All-America honors 23 times, collected
seven individual NCAA Championships, one relay and was a member of four
national championship teams. In 2004, Hall and son, Gary Hall, Jr., became the
first father-son combination in U.S. history to qualify for three Olympic Games.

Rick Early competed for the United States at the 1972 Olympics in Munich and
placed fifth in platform diving. He was a six-time All-American and a member of

Luis Nino de Rivera competed for Mexico in the 1964 and 1968 Olympic Games.
In 1964 in Tokyo, he finished 10th in platform diving and 12th in the three-meter
springboard. Four years later in Mexico City, he was fourth in the springboard
diving competition and seventh in the Platformer. A three-time All-American at
Indiana, he was a member of the 1968 NCAA Championship team and Big Ten
title teams from 1966-68.

Jim Henry competed for the United States at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico
City and won a bronze medal in springboard diving. Inducted into the IU
Athletics Hall of Fame in 1984, Henry won five individual national titles from
1968-70. He won the one-meter national championship in 1968, 1969 and 1970
and the three-meter title in 1969 nd 1970. He also placed third on the three-meter
springboard at the 1968 NCAA Championships. He helped lead the Hoosiers to
back-to-back-to-back NCAA titles from 1968-70.

Ronald Jacks competed in four individual events and was a member of

One of the most highly decorated male swimmers in United States history,
Charlie Hickcox won individual gold medals in both the 200-and 400-meter IM
events at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. That same year, he also led
the United States’ 400-meter medley relay team to a gold medal. In his fourth
event at the 1968 Games, Hickcox earned a silver medal in the 100-meter backstroke. Inducted into the IU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1982, Hickcox won three
individual titles at the 1968 NCAA Championships and swept both backstroke
events in 1967.

Mark Kerry, while swimming for Australia, earn three Olympic medals competing in three different Olympic Games. In 1980 at the Moscow Games, Kerry was
the backstroke leg of the gold medal winning 400-meter medley relay. Also at
the Moscow Games, he won a bronze medal in the 200-meter backstroke. Four
years later, he was a member of the 400-meter medley relay that won bronze in
Los Angeles. Kerry finished fifth in the 200 back, seventh in the 100 back, and
sixth as a member of the 400 medley relay at the 1976 Olympic Games in
Montreal. He competed in the 100 back at both the 1980 and 1984 Games. A nine
time All-America selection, he was a member of Indiana’s Big Ten championship teams in 1978 and 1979.

John Kinsella earned medals at two different Olympic Games. At Mexico City in
1968, Kinsella earned a silver medal in the 1,500-meter freestyle. Four years later
at Munich, he took home a gold medal in the 800-meter freestyle. An NCAA
Champion in in three different events, Kinsella was a 17-time All-America selection. Kinsella was the first man to break 16:00 in the 1500-meter freestyle. In
1970, he won the Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete.

Mark Lenzi won a gold medal on the three-meter at the 1992 Olympic Games in

Lenzi won the one-meter in 1989 and again in 1990. He also placed second on
the three-meter in 1989 and was the runner-up on three-meter and platform in
1990.

earned All-America honors in the 200-yard breaststroke with a third place finish
at the 1988 NCAA Championships. Lopez placed eighth in the 200-yard IM at the
1989 NCAA Championships.

Djan Madruga competed at the 1976 Montreal Olympics Games, the 1980
Olympic Games in Moscow and the 1984 Los Angeles Games. Madruga won a
bronze medal in the 800-meter freestyle relay at the 1980 Games from Brazil. He
finished just short of bronze with fourth place finishes in the 400-free in 1976, the
1500 free in 1976 and the 400 free in 1980. He was also fifth in the 400 IM at the
1980 Moscow Games. At Indiana, he was a four-time All-America selection and
was a member of three Big Ten championship teams in 1977, 1978, and 1980.

Frank McKinney added a gold, silver, and bronze medal to his trophy case over
the course of two Olympic Games in 1956 and 1960. At the Olympic Games in
Melbourne in 1956, McKinney finished third in the 100-meter backstroke. Four
years later at Rome, he won a silver medal in the 100-yard backstroke and a gold
as a member of the United States’ 400-meter medley relay team. McKinney was
also Indiana’s second NCAA swimming champion, taking top honors in the 100
and 200 backstroke in 1959. McKinney made history of his own in 1960 when he
led off the 400 medley relay, the first Indiana relay to be crowned NCAA
Champions. He was inducted into the IU Hall of Fame in 1982.

Jim Montgomery swam in four events at the 1976 Montreal Olympics and
walked away with three gold medals, including an individual title in the 100meter freestyle. Inducted into the NCAA Hall of Fame in 1990, Jim Montgomery
won swimming letters from 1974-77 and served as team captain as a senior. He
won his first individual NCAA championship in the 200-yard freestyle in 1974 and
went on to win NCAA titles in both the 100- and 200-yard freestyles in 1976. He
also swam on three NCAA championship relay teams. He was the first person
to break 50 seconds in the 100-meter freestyle at the finals of the 1976 Olympic
Games.

Don McKenzie won two gold medals at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City.
He was victorious in both the 100-meter breaststroke and the 400-meter medley
relay. Inducted into the IU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000, McKenzie won the 100yard breaststroke title, swam the breaststroke leg on the winning 400-yard medley relay team, and helped lead Indiana to its second consecutive national title
at the 1969 NCAA Championships. The previous year, McKenzie placed third in
the 200-yard breaststroke, fourth in the 100 breast, and third in the 400-yard
medley relay as Indiana won its first NCAA team title in men’s swimming.

John Murphy competed for the United States at the 1972 Olympic Games and
earned two medals, a bronze in the 100-meter backstroke and a gold in the 400meter free relay. He also finished fourth in the 100-meter freestyle. Murphy
swam on three championship relay teams and earned All-American honors 16
times in his four seasons at Indiana. As a junior in 1974, Murphy swam the third
leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that won the national championship.
One year later, Murphy was again part of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay
team and added a victory as a member of the 800-yard freestyle relay.

the 100-yard fly. One year later, Schulhof finished fourth in the 100 fly and fifth in
the 200 fly.

Fred Schmidt won Olympic medals for the United States in the 200-meter butterfly (bronze) and 400-meter medley relay (gold) at the 1968 Olympic Games in
Mexico City. A four-time NCAA Champion and a seven-time All-America selection, Schmidt won three events at the 1965 NCAA Championships, taking home
titles in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly, as well as swimming the butterfly leg on
the first-place 400-yard medley relay team. In 1964, Schmidt won the 200 butterfly . He was a member of NCAA title teams in 1968 and 1969.

Ken Sitzberger won a gold medal on the springboard for the United States at the

Mark Spitz went to the starting block seven times at the 1972 Olympic Games in
Munich and walked away with seven gold medals, including four as an individual and three as a member of relay teams. He also won two gold medals as a
member of relays at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. Quite possibly the most
famous swimmer in the history of the sport, Spitz also won eight individual
NCAA titles and four team titles. He is one of only nine swimmers in NCAA history to win an individual title for four consecutive years. He was inducted into
the IU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1982.

Mike Stamm turned in efforts that earned him three medals at the 1972 Olympic
Games in Munich. Individually, he won silver medals in both the 100- and 200meter backstroke and secured a gold medal in the 400-meter medley relay.
Inducted into the IU Hall of Fame in 1993, Stamm is one of the top backstrokers
in NCAA history. A 13-time All-America selection, he won both the 100- and 200yard backstroke titles at the 1973 NCAA Championships.

Tom Trethewey swam the 200-meter breaststroke at the 1964 Olympic Games in
Tokyo. At Indiana, he was a five-time All-America selection and won NCAA

member of Indiana’s Big Ten championship teams in 1964, 1965 and 1966.

championship, an individual national title in the 200-yard individual medley at
the 1975 NCAA Championships and three NCAA titles as a member of relays.

1984 Los Angeles Olympics. His best result was a 10th-place finish in the 200meter freestyle in 1984. At the 1988 NCAA Championships, Vallejo earned AllAmerica honors as he placed 10th in the 500-yard freestyle.

Indiana’s first Olympian in the sport of swimming, Bill Woolsey won a gold
medal as a member of the 800-meter freestyle relay at the 1952 Helsinki Olympic
Games. Woolsey also competed in the 1500-meter freestyle at the 1952 Games
as well. Four years later, he won silver as part of the 800 free relay. He also
swam in the 100 free, taking sixth and the 400 free. An eight-time All-America
selection, Woolsey also won two NCAA championships each in both the 220and 440-yard freestyle.

Win Young competed for the United States at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico

Swimming for Australia, Bob Windle won a gold medal in the 1,500-meter
freestyle at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo. A 10-time All-America honoree at
Indiana, Bob Windle was a standout freestyler who displayed success at virtually every distance. In 1966, Windle anchored Indiana’s first-place 800-yard
freestyle relay, which marked the first time the Hoosiers won this event. He was
a member of Indiana’s 1968 NCAA championship team and contributed to IU’s
Big Ten team titles in 1966, 1967, and 1968.

Peter Johnston swam for the Hoosiers and won the Most Improved Award as a
freshman in 1993. The following summer, Peter died tragically in an auto accident. Indiana’s Most Improved Swimmer is recognized with the Peter Johnston

JEFF WARRICK AWARD
Jeff Warrick dove for the Hoosiers from 1991-94. Despite not being expected to
be one of Indiana’s top divers, Warrick earned All-American and Academic AllAmerican honors in his four-year career. Dr. Jeff Huber honors Indiana’s Most
Improved Diver with the Jeff Warrick Award.

THE ‘DOC’ LEWIS AWARD
This award is named after Dr. Ronald “Doc” Lewis, a long-time supporter and
volunteer assistant diving coach for the Indiana University diving program. Doc
was a microbiologist for the EPA and in his spare time worked tirelessly for the
diving program. When he retired, he moved to Bloomington and devoted countless hours of service. This award is presented annually to an individual who has
made significant contributions to the IU diving program.
MARGE COUNSILMAN SERVICE AWARD
This award is named after Marge Counsilman, the wife of legendary coach
James ‘Doc’ Counsilman. The long-time supporter of the Indiana University
swimming and diving program, Marge served as the surrogate mother for
countless student-athletes that made their way through Bloomington. This
award is presented annually to an individual who has served the IU swimming
and diving program.
