Gladstone INSIDE THIS ISSUE: District News 1-3 Encore! 3 Mary Poppins 4 4 , I S S U E 2 6 W E E K O F A P R I L 6 - 1 0 , 2 0 1 5 School News North Freshman Staff members at North were treated to a "Welcome Spring" celebration on the first official day of Spring! The principals provided the first "picnic lunch" of the year including hot dogs and other treats! Come on warm weather...we can't wait until you arrive! At the Freshman School, we kicked off our annual Anti-Bullying week from 3/23-3/27. Each day consisted of an Anti Bullying Activity. Monday the students started the Warm Fuzzy activity where they wrote nice and encouraging notes to each other on PostIt -Notes and stuck them around the school. There were also Anti-Bullying skits, scenarios, and videos shown throughout the week. On Thursday, students from the Freshman School went to the High School and participated in the Youth Summit where they discussed bullying, drug/alcohol use, and being a leader with members of the Coalition. It was a very successful and enlightening week. Our spring Book Fair was called "Under the Sea"! Students and their families had the opportunity to shop all week. Happy Reading! West Fourth grade students performed "Pirates!" the musical for their classmates and packed the house on Wednesday evening to perform it for our parents and community. Thanks to Mrs.Massie for a job well done! Check out Ms. Jackson's students celebrating PJ Day at West! Our students earned this reward for being so generous during the Jammies in January event! Don't be fooled by their sleeping faces... they are full of energy and ready to learn! VOLUME 4, ISSUE PAGE 26 2 East Mrs. Schoelwer's and Mrs. Gati's math class work on area and perimeter in their pajamas! Students explored the various shapes throughout the lobby of East to measure the area and perimeter of each shape. They had coincidentally earned Pajama Day on the same day! The 4th Grade Chorus warms up for their Spring Performance! What a great night! They did a fabulous job with a standing ovation to end the night. A huge thanks to Mrs. Stover and Mrs. Phillips for all their great work this school year! Kristen Otte, children's author of the Adventures of Zelda books, visited our third grade on Friday. She is spending one day with each of our second, third, and fourth graders. The students have enjoyed spending personal time in their classroom and getting the most out of the advise she has to share. This has been a great experience for both students and teachers! East planned fun spirit days for Right to Read week. The theme was based around dogs. This picture shows "wild dog day" with Susan Ventling posing with some of her 4th grade students. East 2nd graders held a flea market as the culminating activity for their economics unit in social studies. Each class made a product and sold it to other second graders. All profits went to the Pasta for Pennies fundraiser currently being held at East. Intermediate FIS students were recognized for Straight A's for the first semester at a special breakfast. Students got to enjoy juice and donuts with their family as choir, band, and orchestra classes performed. Students also got a certificate that recognized their hard work! Congratulations to all of the Straight A achievers! FIS students have been demonstrating the big three: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be a Problem Solver. Students put tickets in a drawing as they earned them throughout third quarter. Third quarter winners of either a Kindle Fire or Best Buy gift card at FIS were: Alex Gallo, Bradley Arvin, Connor Thompson, and Carly Damon. Thank you for being such positive role models at FIS! Students who demonstrated positive behavior throughout third quarter were able to participate in the PRIDE Party. Students could visit a photo booth to take pictures, use their electronics, get their face painted, or play a game on scooters called Hungry Hungry Hippos. Fairfield Music/Arts Department News The Fairfield show choirs- Rhythm Express, Pure Elegance, and Choraliers competed in the Hampton Roads Invitational in Virginia on Saturday, March 28 and took home several awards including Most Innovative, Best Choreography, People's Choice, and each group took Grand Champion honors in their division- Pure Elegance won in Class A High School Women's Choirs, Rhythm Express won Class B Mixed ( HS Choirs against all high school choirs) and Choraliers won Class A Mixed HS Choirs. This marks the end of the show choirs competition season. School News cont. North cont. Students at North take a reading break to enjoy our Right to Read Week Activities. The theme this year was "Under The Sea". Students got to "dive" into a good book, eat goldfish crackers and dress as their favorite book characters! East cont. Some of the morning students at East Latchkey celebrated "Right to Read" week with a day at the beach. They wore their beach attire and took a break from reading their favorite books to enjoy some playtime at our "beach". Central The Literacy Cadre at Central put together a fabulous Right to Read Week. Kristen Otte, a published author of multiple books and a coach with Fairfield City Schools came and spoke to each grade level about reading and writing. Guest readers came and read to students throughout the week Ed Hartman of Furniture Fair donated Fireman Bears for the students he read to. 3rd Grade students were caught reading in Clifford's Dog House. The theme of the week was Reading is Pawsitively Awesome. 3
