Message from the Chair of the Board of Directors and the President and CEO
Every year more Canadians express an interest in becoming engaged in their own
healthcare. An explosion of new technology that allows personal monitoring of
blood pressure, blood sugar, sleep patterns and overall fitness has helped. So has
the realization that our healthcare system will be more effective with active
participation from all of us. Dr. Marion Collins founded MedicAlert in 1956 as a
charity based upon the principle that people should take responsibility for their own
health and especially their own healthcare information. Over 5 million MedicAlert
members worldwide have heeded this call to action.
New technology has allowed us to create member communities that were previously
not possible: our social media presence continues to grow and engage an
increasing number of members and non-members. If you haven’t done so already,
connect with us on Facebook, Twitter or visit our YouTube channel.
In 2012 we launched the MedicAlert Safely Home program in partnership with the
Alzheimer Society of Canada. This program combines the benefits of MedicAlert
membership with the Alzheimer Safely Home Program to give those with dementia
an unprecedented level of protection and added peace of mind for their caregivers.
We also helped thousands of Canadians to become protected by MedicAlert through
our Membership Assistance and No Child Without programs funded, in part, by
donations from our generous members.
Every year we owe a debt of gratitude to the many people who help MedicAlert
thrive, including the thousands of health professionals who regularly refer their
patients to us; the emergency responders who “look, read, and call” to obtain vital
medical data about MedicAlert members; our dedicated staff who care deeply about
serving members well; and our Board of Directors who collectively volunteer
hundreds of hours each year to ensure that MedicAlert achieves its mission of
putting every Canadian in a position to benefit from high quality health information
at time of need.
But most of all we owe a debt of gratitude to our members whose sharing of ideas
and experiences continue to make MedicAlert a very special organization to be part
of.
Thank you.

Report of the Independent Auditor on the
Summary Financial Statements
To the Members of Canadian MedicAlert Foundation Incorporated
The accompanying summary financial statements, which comprise the summary statement of financial
position as at December 31, 2012, the summary statement of operations and changes in net assets for the
year then ended, and related notes are derived from the audited financial statements of Canadian
MedicAlert Foundation Incorporated for the year ended December 31, 2012. We expressed an unmodified
audit opinion on those financial statements in our report dated March 21, 2013. Those financial
statements and the summary financial statements do not reflect the effects of events that occurred
subsequent to the date of our report on those financial statements.
The summary financial statements do not contain all the disclosures required by Canadian accounting
standards for not-for-profit organizations. Reading the summary financial statements, therefore, is not a
substitute for reading the audited financial statements of Canadian MedicAlert Foundation Incorporated.
Management's Responsibility for the Summary of Financial Statements
Management is responsible for the preparation of the summary of the audited financial statements on the
basis described in the note to the summary financial statements.
Auditor’s Responsibility
Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the summary financial statements based on our procedures,
which were conducted in accordance with Canadian Auditing Standard (CAS) 810, “Engagements to
Report on Summary Financial Statements”.
Opinion
In our opinion, the summary financial statements derived from the audited financial statements of
Canadian MedicAlert Foundation Incorporated for the year ended December 31, 2012 are a fair summary
of those financial statements, on the basis described in the note to the summary financial statements.
Comparative Information
Without modifying our opinion, we draw attention to the Comparative Information paragraph in our audit
report dated March 21, 2013, on the audited financial statements, which indicates that Canadian
MedicAlert Foundation Incorporated adopted Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit
organizations on January 1, 2012 with a transition date of January 1, 2011. Those standards were applied
retrospectively by management to the comparative information in these financial statements, including the
statements of financial position as at December 31, 2011 and January 1, 2011, and the statements of
operations, changes in net assets and cash flows for the year ended December 31, 2011, and related
disclosures. We were not engaged to report on the restated comparative information and, as such, it is
unaudited.
