Chairperson’s Report
It has been my great pleasure to be
the Chair of the Inner West Neighbour
Aid Management Committee during
the past year. I know I speak for all
Committee members when I say that
it has been a privilege to be part of
the valuable work of the staff, led by
Allison Yee-Brogan, and our many
volunteers. Their support enables
many people to stay where they want
to be, in their own homes, in their
own communities.
It has been a delight for the Committee
to participate in key events, especially
“Celebrating All Things 100”, a
highlight where we celebrated some
of our clients’ very special birthdays.
The Committee has also been
very pleased with the many
improvements made during the year
to the office systems, which make
our work more efficient and effective,
such as the IT, payroll and asset
management systems.
We also gratefully acknowledge the
support of our government funding
6
partners and private sponsors.
Congratulations Inner West Neighbour
Aid on a very successful year, and our
thanks to all the staff and volunteers
who made it possible.
Diana Temby
Chairperson
General Manager’s Report
The current challenges facing the aged
care sector including legislative reforms,
uncertainty in government funding and
the general decline in public donations,
means that standing tall as a not for
profit community organisation has
never been more crucial. Throughout
the financial year ended 30 June 2013,
Inner West Neighbour Aid stood tall.
We will continue to be faced with
emerging challenges and opportunities.
However, currently we are equipped
with the right people, resources and
processes to ensure the sustainability
of the organisation now and into
the future.
The theme for this Annual Report is
Listening to Our Community. This year
INNER WEST NEIGHBOUR AID ANNUAL REPORT 2012–2013
we have maintained our reputation
within the Inner West community and
the wider community care sector as
a highly regarded service provider of
Home Maintenance and Social Support
services for older people, people with
disability and their carers. This year we
asked our clients and volunteers for
their feedback and ideas and we have
listened, so that we can continue to
improve our services. As our population
ages, we are acutely aware that our
services must match the demand but
also that our volunteer roles must
provide options for connections that
reflect people’s special interests.
We acknowledge and thank our
funding bodies, community partners,
donors and supporters. During the
financial year, Inner West Neighbour
Aid was granted significant oneoff funding from the Department
of Health and Ageing to assist with
costs incurred in making changes to
meet the contractual requirements
of the Commonwealth Home and
Community Care (HACC) Program. This
funding was earmarked for changes to
business practices including financial
accountability, payroll and human
resources, the purchase of IT equipment,
police checks for volunteers, updating
promotional material and re-branding of
HACC resources.
Thank you to the fantastic Inner West
Neighbour Aid team that consists of our
Management Committee, our amazing
volunteers and dedicated staff. The
Management Committee has worked
closely for the past 12 months and
has contributed to the development
and future direction of Inner West
Neighbour Aid. Each Committee
member has shared their skills and
experience to create a cohesive,
professional and insightful team. Thank
you to our Chairperson Diana Temby
and Secretary Betsey Brister for their
continued support and leadership of
the Committee.
perseverance throughout the year.
It is a great feeling to work in
supportive, hard working, caring
and knowledgeable team.
Thank you most of all to our clients,
who are central to our services
and everything we do.
Allison Yee-Brogan
General Manager
Many thanks to our volunteers for
the important role that they play in our
community. Our volunteers remind us
of the importance of helping others.

Listening To Our Clients
The Client Survey helps develop a
picture of client satisfaction with
various aspects of our service,
suggestions for improvement and
areas where we might expand our
services. For the 2013 Client Survey,
we received an outstanding response,
with over 230 responses.
All services were very highly rated, as
was the proficiency and friendliness of
both staff and volunteers. Clients told
us that Home Visiting and Neighbour
Aid Pets volunteers provide crucial
support and companionship to allow
them to remain independent. Lawn
mowing contractors do a good job,
at a fair price, when they say they
will. Our Garden Aid service is very
highly rated and Mini-Outings provide
welcome variety and stimulation.
• 98% of respondents believe
that Inner West Neighbour Aid
delivers services that are valuable
to the community.
8
• 96% of respondents feel that Inner
West Neighbour Aid staff treat
clients with respect and courtesy.
• 95% of respondents have a high
degree of confidence in the
management and staff of Inner
West Neighbour Aid.
• 89% of respondents read and
enjoy our quarterly newsletter,
Neighbour News.
Clients tell us that they would be
happy to recommend Inner West
Neighbour Aid to another person and
many already have. Nearly half of the
230 respondents came to Inner West
Neighbour Aid through a friend or
current client and we are very proud
that our clients see our services as
being so valuable to our community.
The comments and suggestions
provided by clients will allow Inner
West Neighbour Aid to advocate for
further funding and plan for growth
in Home Maintenance and Social
Support services.

Celebrating All Things 100
During NSW Seniors Week in
March 2013 we held an event called
“Celebrating All Things 100” at
the Canada Bay Club. This was an
opportunity to mark the extraordinary
and special lives of 6 of our clients
turning 100 this year. Our centenarians
are Nora Watson, Josie Nelson,
Mary Petty, Winifred Lynch, Ivy Ella
Vince and Ivy Mavis Delaney and
they are shining examples of how
to stay connected and remain living
independently in the community. Our
centenarians or their family member
were presented with a certificate and
flowers to commemorate this occasion.
Keep up the good work.
Mayor Morris Mansour,
Ashfield Council
I was privileged to attend the lunch celebrating the
centenarians (Mum is 101!) and I was so humbled by the
attention to everyone who attended, by smiling loving people.
Thank you on behalf of Mum and my family.

10 INNER WEST NEIGHBOUR AID ANNUAL REPORT 2012–2013
We also welcomed distinguished
guests Mayor Morris Mansour from
Ashfield Council, Councillor Stephanie
Kokkolis representing Strathfield
Council and our clients who have
reached the significant age of 95 years
plus. One of the highlights of this event
was the performance from our “Alive
and Kicking” group and their vivacious
instructor Fleur Denny. It was amazing
to see all that energy! A special thank
you to Angela Salvatore for baking the
“100” cake.

Our Programs
Inner West Neighbour Aid provides Home Maintenance services and Social
Support services.
HOME MAINTENANCE
SERVICES
Our Home Maintenance services
offer assistance to keep a person’s
home in a safe and liveable condition.

support of 48 Garden Aid Volunteers.
The Garden Aid service brings together
individuals with the common interests
of gardening and giving of one’s time
and boasts the longest standing
volunteers within Inner
West Neighbour Aid.
Garden Aid
Our Garden Aid teams bring gardens
back to life for eligible people who
live in their own home, but who can
no longer maintain their own gardens
or afford professional gardening
services. A Garden Aid Team Leader
works with a team of “green-thumbed”
volunteers to ensure that gardens are
brought back to a stage where they are
attractive, can be enjoyed safely and
are manageable with minimal upkeep.
This year our Garden Aid teams visited
290 gardens. We achieved this with the

Lawn Mowing Subsidy Program
The Lawn Mowing Subsidy Program
aims to help financially disadvantaged
frail older people, people with a
disability and carers to maintain
their lawns. The service includes
professional lawn mowing, trimming
lawn edges, sweeping paths and
raking leaves and lawn areas.
I am so happy with my yard.

Our Programs
SOCIAL SUPPORT SERVICES
Social Support services encourage
participation in community life. The
focus is on socialising and keeping
active to suit individual needs.
Home Visiting
Home Visiting aims to match
volunteers with people who may
not be able to access other services.
Visits in the home create a safe
place to improve social confidence
and wellbeing, whilst still promoting
a connection to the community.
Throughout the financial year we
provided home visiting services to
40 clients.
Occasionally, someone may have
needs that are too complex for
a volunteer Home Visitor. In this
instance we may offer a visit
from one of our Social Support
Specialists. Throughout the financial
year we provided this specialist
home visiting service to 14 clients.
14 INNER WEST NEIGHBOUR AID ANNUAL REPORT 2012–2013
I really appreciate assistance with mail and letter
writing because my sight is non-existent.
Home Visiting client
Community Visitors Scheme
The Community Visitors Scheme links
volunteers with people who are living
in residential aged care facilities in the
Inner West. These visits aim to create
friendships and provide a link to the
wider community for residents who
do not receive many visitors. Volunteers
visit on a fortnightly basis and we
match people with similar interests,
experiences and outlooks on life.
Inner West Neighbour Aid is currently
funded for 16 volunteers, who are
matched with clients in 8 residential
aged care facilities in the Inner West.
Throughout the financial year we
matched 18 volunteers with people
living in residential aged care facilities.
15
Mini Outings
Mini outings are a chance to make new
acquaintances or get out and about
with friends and remain active and
visible in the community. These outings
are ideal for people who may not feel
confident going out by themselves
because of mobility, anxiety or social
needs, or who are in need of respite
from their caring role. Our outings
are planned in advance, taking into
consideration interests, mobility needs,
costs and current events. We organise
up to five day time outings per week,
Mondays to Fridays, and include
transport to and from home. Some of
our outings have included picnics in
the park, going to the movies, ferry
rides and lunch in the city and visits to
places of interest such as the NSW Art
Gallery, Nicholson Museum, fish and
chips by the sea and a smorgasbord
of wonderful food at a variety of clubs.
We also have a variety of corporate
sponsored special events, made
possible by United Way.
16 INNER WEST NEIGHBOUR AID ANNUAL REPORT 2012–2013
Your outings are always
enjoyable and the variety of outings
seems well covered.
Mini outings client
We see our connection with
clients through these outings as an
opportunity to keep a professional
eye on their health and wellbeing and
a means to provide assistance with
independent information and resources
where appropriate. This financial year
we facilitated 173 mini outings in and
around Sydney.
Alive and Kicking
Assisted Online Shopping
The Alive and Kicking program offers
activities that promote healthy ageing
through a series of activities that focus
on mind, body and spirit. This financial
year we facilitated 42 Alive and Kicking
sessions, which included modified
exercise classes, laughter yoga, art
expression, brain training exercises,
bingo, hand massages, Wii games,
guest speakers on falls prevention,
advocacy, anxiety and podiatry.
Our Assisted Online Shopping
program supports people who require
assistance to purchase essential
grocery items. Inner West Neighbour
Aid has an agreement with Coles
supermarkets to place orders on
behalf of eligible clients. Assisted
Online Shopping is ideal for people
who have difficulty with mobility
or a medical condition that limits
their ability to do their own
grocery shopping and are
unable to receive assistance
from other community
services, family or friends
or to order groceries online
independently.
The Alive and Kicking group and
their exercise instructor Fleur Denny
prepared an amazing performance for
the “Celebrating All Things 100” event
in March 2013. Thank you to the Alive
and Kicking group, who proved that 80
is the new 60 and that means that 100
has to be the new 80.
Gentle, fun, lively, very friendly,
lots of laughter.
Great exercise, great teacher, great
company and interesting after activities.
Alive and Kicking client
Throughout the financial year
we supported 15 clients with
Assisted Online Shopping.
Men’s Group
The benefits of men gathering and meeting as a single gender group are widely
recognised, particularly in the retirement and post-retirement phase of life. The Men’s Group
is a monthly social group specifically for men. This group gives older men the opportunity
to meet new friends and continue to be involved in the community. This year, we supported
10 men through the Men’s Group.

Use IT or Lose IT, Computer Course for Seniors
Neighbour Aid Pets
We received a grant from Ashfield
Council to pilot an 8 week basic
computer course. We purchased
3 laptop computers and staff members
Patrick Murray and Jackie Walters,
with the help of one of our volunteers
Randa Goncalves, developed the
content for the course. The outcomes
of this course have been increased
confidence and skills to use technology
Research shows that the
companionship provided by a pet
can significantly improve health and
wellbeing, as well as loneliness and
social isolation. Neighbour Aid Pets
matches older people or people with
a disability with pets from reputable
shelters. In partnership with RSPCA
NSW and Sydney Dogs and Cats Home,
we match people who are interested
in adopting a dog or cat according to
their individual needs and preferences.
We also match clients with a volunteer
if they require basic assistance
with their pet, such as walking
and grooming.
My dog has a good walk at least once,

for proving that age is no barrier for

I really enjoyed my placement at Inner West
Neighbour Aid this semester. The team was
extremely supportive, kind, and welcoming
to me and I was able to transition very
easily into the organisation. I definitely
would recommend this organisation for
future students and in general anyone
looking for some volunteer work. I loved the
placement and as well as enjoying my time
there, I learnt a lot of valuable skills.
I look forward to volunteering there in the
future if I am able to.

Treasurer’s Report
FINANCIALS
This financial year Inner West
Neighbour Aid reported a net surplus
of $57,571 with net assets worth
$270,117. This surplus was largely due
to a range of funding, grants and
donations received with thanks from
local clubs, councils and generous
individual donors. Our major funding
source from the Department of Health
and Ageing constituted 93% of our
overall income base.
The NSW Department of Family and
Community Services continues to fund
and administer Home and Community
Care (HACC) services for people under
the age of 65 and Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander people under
50. For Inner West Neighbour Aid our
split of HACC funding is 94% from the
Commonwealth and 6% from the State
Government.
During the financial year, Inner West
Neighbour Aid was granted $70,000
one-off funding by the Department
of Health and Ageing to assist with
costs incurred in making changes to
meet the contractual requirements
of the Commonwealth Home and
Community Care (HACC) Program.
This allowed Inner West Neighbour
Aid to obtain financial advice from
a Certified Practising Accountant to
improve payroll, financial management
and reporting systems. This included
a review of the Chart of Accounts
in line with the National Standard
Chart of Accounts, improvements
to the acquittal reporting system, a
comprehensive update of the Fixed
Asset Register, a review of payroll,
superannuation and leave provisions.
Thank you to Indah Kusumawati
for her diligence in the Finance
and Administration role. We also
acknowledge the professional audit
and accounting services of
MNSA Pty Ltd.
