O verlooked by the mighty Skiddaw (3054 ft / 931m), the pretty town of Keswick is the tourism centre of the north lakes. Wander round the town and you’ll discover characterful local shops, galleries and tempting cafés and restaurants. In 1276 Edward I granted the town its market charter, and the Saturday market still takes place today. Black lead was discovered at Seathwaite in the 16th century, and so began pencil making, still the town’s major industry. The strangely fascinating Pencil Museum tells the intriguing story of pencil making in Keswick. The Victorian Museum & Art Gallery has a local history collection and original manuscripts from the famous Lake Poets. John Ruskin, who had many associations with Keswick, once said Keswick was a place almost too beautiful to live in. 11 12 X5 Workington | Cockermouth | Keswick | Penrith Sundays including some public holidays Workington bus station stand C Workington Clifton Hotel Cockermouth Main Street Embleton Wheatsheaf Brathay Hill Lakes Distillery Thornthwaite Swan Hotel Braithwaite Police Station Keswick bus station arrive 0715 0724 0738 0746 0749 0751 0759 0804 0812 0915 0924 0938 0946 0949 0951 0959 1004 1012 1125 1134 1148 1156 1159 1201 1209 1214 1222 1325 1334 1348 1356 1359 1401 1409 1414 1422 1525 1534 1548 1556 1559 1601 1609 1614 1622 0825 0836 0843 0853 x 0859 0906 1025 1036 1043 1053 1100 1106 1113 1225 1236 1243 1253 1300 1306 1313 1425 1436 1443 1453 1500 1506 1513 1625 1636 1643 1653 1700 1706 1713 1725 1734 1748 1756 1759 1801 1809 1814 1822 To comply with drivers’ hours regulations, buses connect at Keswick.
