A legendary giant and King of All Cumbria is said to be
buried in the giant’s grave in St Andrew’s Churchyard.
The four hogback stones surrounding the grave are said
to represent wild boar he killed in nearby Inglewood
Forest. The present church was built in 1720, although
the tower, with walls 6 feet thick, remains from the
original 13th-century church.

Every third Tuesday of the month between March and
December you’ll find a lively farmers’ market with fresh
local produce and tasty delicacies to try or take home.
The imposing ruins of Penrith Castle, begun in 1399, have
an intriguing past. It became a royal fortress for Richard,
Duke of Gloucester before he became King Richard III in
1483, but by 1565 it was virtually a ruin and was further
dismantled after the Civil War.

O
verlooked by the mighty Skiddaw (3054 ft
/ 931m), the pretty town of Keswick is the
tourism centre of the north lakes. Wander
round the town and you’ll discover characterful local
shops, galleries and tempting cafés and restaurants.
In 1276 Edward I granted the town its market charter,
and the Saturday market still takes place today.
Black lead was discovered at Seathwaite in the 16th
century, and so began pencil making, still the town’s
major industry. The strangely fascinating Pencil Museum
tells the intriguing story of pencil making in Keswick.
The Victorian Museum & Art Gallery has a local history
collection and original manuscripts from the famous
Lake Poets. John Ruskin, who had many associations
with Keswick, once said Keswick was a place almost
too beautiful to live in.
