Plantsrespondtochangesintheirenvironment,suchasabioticstress,byalteringtheexpressionlevelsofawidearrayofgenes.Weconductedhigh‐
throughputgenesequencingtoidentifydifferentiallyexpressedgenesinwinterandspringwheatinresponsetocoldshockstress.Wemappedourdatatoa
referencegenome,annotatedthedataset,andgeneratedgeneexpressioncounts.Weestimateddifferentialgeneexpressionandranstatisticalanalyses,
identifying1521genesthatwereup‐regulatedandexhibitedanincreasedexpressionundercoldstressinthewinterwheat.Wealsoidenti ied928genes
thatweresubsequentlydown‐regulatedinthewinterwheat.Moreover,weidenti iedmanygenesthatweredifferentiallyexpressedinthewinterwheat
thatdidnot luctuateinthespringwheatinresponsetocoldstresstreatment.Thedataelucidatedfromthisstudycantranslatetodownstreamapplications
thataimtoexpandcropsustainabilityinsub‐optimalenvironmentalconditions.

Thispaperlooksattheimpactofaconceptknownas“fridging”,oncomicculturebothinthepastandpresent.Fridg‐
ingwaspopularizedasatermin1994,bycomicauthorGailSimone.Simonenoticedanalarmingtrendoffemalecharacters
beingkilledasaplotdevice,orwhentheyweredeemednolongeruseful.Itwasveryimportantthatthispaperbewritten
becausethereisnotcurrentlyverymuchacademicworkonthisconcept.Fridgingisverydangerous,inthatitbecomesac‐
ceptableifitisnotchallenged.Itcannotbechallengedifreaderscannotidentifywhattheyareseeing.Oncesexismandfridg‐

ConcurrentPosterSessionEvent Title:Reducing the Magnitude of Soil Erosion Using Bacterial Biofilms Produced by Bacillus subƟlis and Bacillus cereus Erosionisanoccurrencethatoftenhappensasaresultofwind,rain,water low,andothernaturalagents.Inare‐
as prone to such cases, especially in the Paci ic Northwest where rain is a common occurrence, erosion can be
damagingandrepairscanbecostly.Ourstudydeterminedwhetherbacterialbio ilmssecretedbyBacillusspecies
havethepotentialtoreducethemagnitudeofsoilerosioncausedbyheavyrainfall.Soilmoundsinoculatedwith
bio ilm‐producing bacteria exhibited the lowest amounts of eroded soil, while soil mounds without bio ilm‐
producingbacteriaexhibitedthehighestamounts.Theseresultssupportthehypothesisthatbio ilmscanreduce
theeffectsoferosionbyholdingloosesoilstogether.

Title:EffectsofsilvernanoparticlesonthegerminationandgrowthofKale
Silvernanoparticles(AgNPs)aredemonstratedaseffectivebiocides,andthustheyareoneofthemostcommonlyapplied
nanomaterials.Despitetheirmanyuses,potentialrunoffofAgNPsraisesconcernsforenvironmentalsafety.Whilesome
studiesreportonthepositiveeffectsofAgNPs,therearealsostudiesthatindicatenegativeoutcomes.Theeffectsvaryde‐
pendingonthespeciesofplantsandtheAgNPs’characteristics.These indingsemphasizetheneedtofurtherunderstandthe
effectsofAgNPsoncropplantsasthedemandforlargercropyieldsincreaseswithourpopulation.Cappingagentsarebe‐
lievedtohelpstabilizeAgNPs.Eachcappingagentisassociatedwithitsowncharacteristicsthatwillplayaroleinthesize,
toxicity,aggregation,anddissolutionofAgNPs.Inthisstudy,weaimtofurtherinvestigatethecharacteristic‐basedeffectsof

WiththefalloftheSovietUnion,Cubafacedmassiveeconomicuncertaintyandsoughttorelyonitsmonetarypolicytostabilizeitselfdur‐
inganeconomicandhumanitariancrisis.Inanattempttoshielditselffromthehyperin lationoftheCubanPeso(CUP),theCastroregime
introducedtheCubanConvertiblePeso(CUC).Althoughthisachieveditsshort‐termgoalofpoliticalandeconomicstability,theeffectsof
twolegalcirculatingcurrencieseffectivelybifurcatedtheCubaneconomyintotwosectorswhichwereseparatedbythetwocurrencies.
Thisseparationhadadisastrouseffectforthemostvulnerablewithintheeconomy.WiththedeathofFidelCastro,anewerawithinCuba
isbeginningandacrucialsteptowardsamoreprosperouseconomyisthegradualadoptionofauni iedcurrency.

Firstresponders,including ire ighters/EMTandpolice,facedifferenttypesofstressonadailybasisincludingstressorsstem‐
mingfromthejobanditsrelatedduties(occupationalstress)aswellasbeing“repeatedlydirectlyexposedtotraumaticsituations”which
bringsaboutabnormalamountsoftraumaticstresswhencomparedtootheroccupations.Thereisalackofresearchonthedifferencein
thesestressesandtheseverityofstressamong irstresponderswhichmakesitmoredif iculttounderstand.Inresponse,thesestressesin
irstrespondersandciviliansandtheirrespectiveresponsesandadaptationstostresswereanalyzed.Ratesofeachstressweremeasured
foreachpopulationandthenwerecomparedbetweenthemtodetermineifthereweredifferencesinthewaytheyexperiencestressand
howtheyrespondwithresiliency.Thisisexpectedtohelppsychologyinregardstochangingthewaystressistreatedtobemoreindividu‐
alized.

Fortwoyears,theresidentsofFlint,Michigan,haveexperiencedacrisiswiththeirdrinkingwater.Like
manyenvironmentalproblems,theFlintwatercrisisdisproportionatelyeffectsthoseinmarginalized
communities,particularlypeopleofcolorandthoseexperiencingpoverty.TheFlintWaterCrisisclearly
demonstratesthatanynotionthattheU.S.hasbecomeapost‐racialsocietyisnaiveandcounterproduc‐
tive.WhenaddressingtheFlintWaterCrisis,largerhistorical,racial,andsocioeconomicfactorsmustbe
