This happens in September or November. The Balclutha is docked in San Francisco. The purpose of this trip is to learn about and experience a sailor’s life. On the field trip you spend the night aboard the Balclutha. To prepare for the trip, you read the book The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle in class. Also, before the trip, the mate's pick out a bandanna for you to wear, or depending on the teacher, you may get assigned a bandanna. Each crew has a different bandanna. The trip starts with a short tour of San Fran- cisco and then you and your class go aboard the ship. There are five crews, each with a different job. Five students from your class get to be the mate of a crew. A mate is the person in charge of a crew. We had to work hard from morning into part of the night. Each crew had night watch at a different time. For example, the galley crew had night watch from 4:005:00 in the morning! During night watch, each crew member had to write about his experience in a log book (journal). You also get letters from another fifth grade class, who are role-playing as your Fall Fest Was a Blast This Year! How could the Tularcitos students wait! Friday’s Fall Festival was just around the corner! Every year the PTO puts on the annual Fall Festival on the first Friday in October. We have this event each year as community building event. Do you like food? The Fall Festival supported a wide variety of food for empty bellies. They had food such as hotdogs, pizza, popcorn balls, cotton candy, shaved ice, tacos, cookies and many more yummy treats. Some students sleep in the wooden bunks and others on the floor. In my class there were not enough bunks so two of the mates had to sleep on the floor. There are no mattress on the bunks, and if you sleep on the floor you get a very thin piece of foam. You wake up bright and early to get started on the work. Trying to sleep and stay warm is one of the most miserable parts of the trip besides (being on your feet so much). On the morning of the Con’t. on page 5 by Marin Herro and Emma Brown One of the favorite activities at the Fall Festival was the Cake Walk. Participants walked around a circle while listening to music. When the music stopped, you crossed your fingers hoping that the number you're standing on got picked. If it did, you picked out a treat. The newspaper staff interviewed Joshua. We asked him what his cake looked like, he said, “It was huge and it had lots of sprinkles on it and it had tie-dye cake inside.” The Con’t. on page 6 P AGE 2 V O LUME 1 , I SSUE 1 Cursive vs. Keyboarding Are you looking forward to learning cursive in elementary school? It is becoming more and more uncommon. Many schools have adopted the common core curriculum which emphasizes technology and may be causingcursive writing to fade away. Students are devoting more time to learning keyboarding skills instead of cursive. What do you think? The Newspaper staff asked some third grade teachers and our principal a few questions about the topic. Mr. G. “Students need a balance of both because kids need to know cursive writing. People also need to know how to write and think without technology,” Mr. G. teaches cursive but it is a choice. Mrs. Mrs. Kershing teaches cursive, but does more with keyboarding. She teachers “both because google docs is important, but kids also need the skill of reading cursive” Kershing Mrs. Ogata Mrs. Ogata teaches “both because cursive would be hard to see disappear completely, but keyboarding is important to modern day education.” Mr. Peterson Students should learn “both because I think keyboarding is a necessary skill that every student needs to learn. Although cursive makes writing fun.” Golden Ticket Raffle At the most recent character counts assembly, Ms. Barbara drew golden tickets for Fro and Jo gift cards which caused a buzz of excitement among students. Students can earn golden tickets by demonstrating our school’s character pillars: responsibility, respect, citizenship, caring, trustworthiness, and fairness. Students can do something as little as picking up trash or as By Marin Herro By Emma Brown big as helping a friend down to the nurse’s office. The newspaper staff asked Mr. Peterson if he thought that having the golden ticket raffle would inspire adults to hand out more golden tickets. He said, “I think that it may result in teachers giving out more golden tickets because the drawing could be a reminder to give tickets to stu- Did you know….edited by dents who are demonstrating Bobcat behavior.” The newspaper staff also asked him why he decided to have the raffle. It was a ton of fun when they finally got to the course. Once you got in, there were large cylinders you had to fight through. After the cylinders, there was a small climbing wall. To wrap it up, there was a fun slide. Toward the end of the Fall Festival, the upper level students danced to popular songs like Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae), Can’t Feel My Face, Uma Thurman, and Cheer- T HE T U LAR T IME S leader. Students truly let go and danced along with their peers. It was hard to walk by them without stopping to dance too.
