Making an heirloom quality, life-long companion in
the form of a knife is far easier than most think.
Western culture has forgotten that knives used to
be simple tools with thin, flexible blades that were
capable of a variety of tasks. These days production
knives are simply too thick and heavy for performance cutting. In this class you will go back to the
roots of knife making and draw upon Scandinavian
traditions to make simple, comfortable and beautiful all-around use belt knives in the tradition of the
puukko. With nothing but hand-tools you will file
the bevels on a Scandi-style blade, heat treat and
make the handle. This hands-on class will focus on
simple tooling, but the instructor will demonstrate
the use of a professional blade grinder as well as
forging. A $15 materials fee is due payable to the
instructor at the start of class. Visit http://www.witc.

Kitchen Sink? It’s in There!
The Kitchen Sink? It’s in There! Must you carry the
needs, perhaps even the ‘might-needs’, with you
each day? Sew up a Hobo Bag to help you with the
task! You decide on the size: Big? Pretty big? Really
big? - depending upon how much you’ll carry in it.
Dividers and/or pockets will help you organize
what’s inside and the wide handles can be adjusted
for carrying the bag on one shoulder or across your
body. Or perhaps you’re someone who needs only
the essentials. For you, the Japanese Knot Bag is
perfect. It’s small, but not so small it can’t comfortably handle your phone, ID, credit card, lip gloss,
whatever is essential for you. The integrated straps
allow you to carry the bag on one wrist; always
handy, yet out-of-the-way. The basic shape of the
bags is similar, and there are lots of options for suitable fabrics. Decide which bag is meant for you;
you’ll receive the pattern in class. Photos and suggestions for fabric and for personalizing your bag
will be included. Basic machine-sewing skills are
necessary. By the end of the class, you’ll have exactly the bag you need. Visit www.witc.edu/supplies for your supply list. An additional material fee
of $5 will be due to instructor at class.

serve yourself at the buffet table, or go through the
receiving line without having to somehow clutch
that bag close to your body or have it slide off your

require a pattern - yet looks like a designer creation.

the pattern at the first class session. Photos and

Spring Spruce-Up

Stitch up some fresh table settings for your eating
area; be it the dining table, kitchen breakfast bar or
trays in front of the TV. The ‘spruce up’ will include a
set of reversible placemats and coordinating napkins. (You’ll decide how many to include in a set.)
The first session you’ll concentrate on the placemats; applying the interfacing, cutting and sewing
the shape you prefer (rectangular, oval, angled corners etc.), then turning and topstitching for a beautiful finish. Matching/coordinating napkins will be
made in session two. They may be double-faced (i.e.
reversible) or single layers with perfectly mitered
corners. You should easily be able to complete two
placemats and two napkins by the end of the class.
More experienced sewers (sewists?) may have time
to make more sets or a matching liner for their favorite serving basket. You’ll realize your table has
never looked better! Basic machine-sewing skills
are required. Visit www.witc.edu/supplies for your

Way to Be: Toxin Free
60-560-610
Every day, the average person is exposed to a multitude of environmental toxins that can wreak havoc on a person’s health and well-being. A large
number of these toxins come from the foods we
eat, personal care products we put on our bodies,
and the cleaning products we use in our homes. In
this class, students will learn about harmful environmental chemicals, and will learn how to incorporate essential oils and other natural substances,
into a healthier lifestyle that reduces the toxin load
on the body. Emphasis will be placed on the role of
diet, nutrition, environment, and the incorporation
of pure essential oils in a healthy lifestyle.

Trauma Informed Care
47-520-405
Trauma Informed Care. Personal Trauma is a hard
topic and there are many trauma survivors in our
community. Becoming “trauma-informed” means
recognizing that people often have many different
types of trauma in their lives. People who have
been traumatized need support and understanding from those around them. Often, trauma survivors can be re-traumatized by well-meaning caregivers and community service providers. Understanding the impact of trauma is an important first
step in becoming a compassionate and supportive
community. This course also gives you the tools to
take care of yourself in a healthy way. Patty
Schachtner serves as the Chief Medical Examiner in
St Croix County, WI. As a Medico-legal death investigator the reality of the trauma associated with
death is an almost daily occurrence. Patty is the CoFounder of the Suicide Prevention Task Force in St
Croix County and has trained thousands of residents in QPR (Question, Persuade, and Refer) in 18
months. This effort is key in the reduction of completed suicides in the county. However while her
work was primarily focused on residents’ she began
to notice the strains of her peers in dealing with the
day to day traumas of the work in public service.
From teachers to medical examiners, those who
serve others tend not to serve themselves. As we
become more and more aware of the studies and
programs of Adverse Childhood experiences and
Trauma informed Care. There is no emphasis on the
wellness of the person providing the service. Patty
seeks to change that. When dealing with the normal consequences of our work, developing the
skills needed to understand our own compassion,
fatigue, and exposure to vicarious traumatization is
essential before we can truly help others.

your own Soul, made by you for you. It has a “voice”

Compassion Fatigue

Culture, Compassion Fatigue & the Cost of Caring.
“Now more than ever, our human tribal circle and
its caregivers need deep healing, support and nourishment, says Gigi Stafne MH, ND. It is increasingly
apparent that health care, emergency and CAM,
Complementary Alternative Medicine professionals and other caregivers have both a strong desire
and need for natural medicine health and wellness
to cope with the demands of the crisis work they’re
engaged in. Many of you also assist people daily,
even hourly, as humanity struggles with severe illness, disease, domestic violence, emotional trauma, natural disasters, civil unrest and escalating violence. Workers and volunteers benefit immensely
from personal and professional support in these
difficult work situations, as well as proven emerging
natural medicine modalities and skills to sustain
one’s personal well-being while serving others in
crisis. Some of you may be coping with compassion
fatigue, vicarious trauma or high intensity stress
that impacts healthful living and quality of life. For
example, in a clinical practice, it is not uncommon

to receive crisis calls of high intensity every hour
from those in need—a family member with cancer,
death of a beloved, multiple chronic diseases or violence, even homicide that has brought the person
you are serving to the brink of despair. This takes an
incredible amount of energy as our world is changing and it takes its toll on you, the caregiver. You’ll
be interested in this course series. Gigi Stafne MH,
ND, is teaching and facilitating this series to help
you deeply nourish your personal and professional
life as you do this incredibly important humanitarian work at this time in an increasingly volatile
world. This series goes far deeper than the usual
caring for the caregiver workshop, including proven CAM modalities, techniques and current research on PTSD and trauma, especially as related to
workers from therapists to police officers and emergency workers.

Beginning Yoga
60-807-628
Have you heard about the benefits of practicing
YOGA? Yoga is not about getting into the shape of
a pretzel. A Yoga practice is about moving your
body with your breath to unite mind, body and
spirit and it is called a practice because it is a journey, not a destination. In this yoga class, you will
learn yoga postures (asanas) to increase flexibility,
strength, endurance, poise, balance and grace. Emphasis will be placed on deep, relaxing, calming
yogic breathing (pranayama) to increase respiration, and help build focus and concentration. You
will also concentrate on moving all the muscles,
juicing all the joints, moving the spine in all five directions, and balancing the body front and back,
side to side. Particular attention will be paid to
alignment in the poses, meeting you where you are.
This is a beginner’s class where modifications will
be offered and students are encouraged to go at
their own pace. Previous yoga practice not required, however being able to go from standing to

Kitchen Sink? It’s in There!
Spring Spruce-Up
60-301-605
60-301-605
The Kitchen Sink? It’s in There! Must you carry the
needs, perhaps even the ‘might-needs’, with you
each day? Sew up a Hobo Bag to help you with the
task! You decide on the size: Big? Pretty big? Really
big? Depending upon how much you’ll carry in it.
Dividers and/or pockets will help you organize
what’s inside and the wide handles can be adjusted
for carrying the bag on one shoulder or across your
body. Or perhaps you’re someone who needs only
the essentials. For you, the Japanese Knot Bag is
perfect. It’s small, but not so small it can’t comfortably handle your phone, ID, credit card, lip gloss ;
whatever is essential for you. The integrated straps
allow you to carry the bag on one wrist ˚ always
handy, yet out-of-the-way. The basic shape of the
bags is similar, and there are lots of options for suitable fabrics. Decide which bag is meant for you;
you’ll receive the pattern in class. Photos and suggestions for fabric and for personalizing your bag
will be included. Basic machine-sewing skills are
necessary. By the end of the class, you’ll have exactly the bag you need. Visitwitc.edu/supplies for
list. An additional material fee of $5 will be due to
instructor at first class.
Stitch up some fresh table settings for your eating
area be it the dining table, kitchen breakfast bar or
trays in front of the TV. The ‘spruce up’ will include a
set of reversible placemats and coordinating napkins. (You’ll decide how many to include in a set.)
The first session you’ll concentrate on the placemats applying the interfacing, cutting and sewing
the shape you prefer (rectangular, oval, angled corners etc.), then turning and topstitching for a beautiful finish. Matching/coordinating napkins will be
made in session two. They may be double-faced (i.e.
reversible) or single layers with perfectly mitered
corners. You should easily be able to complete two
placemats and two napkins by the end of the class.
More experienced sewers (sewists?) may have time
to make more sets or a matching liner for their favorite serving basket. You’ll realize your table has
never looked better! Basic machine-sewing skills
are required. Visit www.witc.edu/supplies for your
supply list.

Mama’s Got a Brand New Bag!
60-301-605
And she’s got a wrap to go with it! Easter, prom,
graduation, confirmation, weddings: all are special
occasions that may be part of your spring or early
summer. If only you had a special bag in which to
carry your ‘essentials’ and a simple, lightweight
wrap to wear. This class is meant for you! Choose to
make the (English) Humbug Bag or the Clamshell
Bag. Either will allow you to dance the night away,
serve yourself at the buffet table, or go through the
receiving line without having to somehow clutch
that bag close to your body or have it slide off your
shoulder. They’re similar in that they are small, hang
delicately from your wrist, are a unique shape and
can be created in a variety of fabrics. There’s a zipper
involved (horrors!), but you’ll learn an easy way to
install it. The wrap, which may be made to be reversible, is super-easy to construct It doesn’t even
require a pattern - yet looks like a designer creation.
You’re the designer! Both the bag and the wrap are
perfect for you or to be given as a gift. You’ll receive
the pattern at the first class session. Photos and
suggestions for fabric will be included. Basic machine-sewing skills and a bit of patience are required! Visit witc.edu/supplies for supply list. An
material fee of $3 will be due at first class.

Culture, Compassion Fatigue & the Cost of Caring.
“Now more than ever, our human tribal circle and
its caregivers need deep healing, support and nourishment” Gigi Stafne MH, ND. It is increasingly apparent that health care, emergency and CAM, Complementary Alternative Medicine professionals and
other caregivers have both a strong desire and
need for natural medicine health and wellness to
cope with the demands of the crisis work they’re
engaged in. Many of you also assist people daily,
even hourly, as humanity struggles with severe illness, disease, domestic violence, emotional trauma, natural disasters, civil unrest and escalating violence. Workers and volunteers benefit immensely
from personal and professional support in these
difficult work situations, as well as proven emerging
natural medicine modalities and skills to sustain
one’s personal well-being while serving others in
crisis. Some of you may be coping with compassion
fatigue, vicarious trauma or high intensity stress
that impacts healthful living and quality of life. For
example, in a clinical practice, it is not uncommon
to receive crisis calls of high intensity every hour
from those in need—a family member with cancer,
death of a beloved, multiple chronic diseases or violence, even homicide that has brought the person
you are serving to the brink of despair. This takes an
incredible amount of energy as our world is changing and it takes its toll on you, the caregiver. You’ll
be interested in this course series. Gigi Stafne MH,
