Summer Holiday Homework Class – 5 (2016) Social Studies Instructions I. Pick any TWO of the following assignments/projects to complete over your holidays. II. All work MUST be handwritten. III. All written work needs to be in your own words. IV. You may print images/pictures relevant to your assignments if convenient. Hand drawn/colored images are perfectly acceptable. V. All the sources (books/websites/people) you use to complete your assignments MUST be mentioned. VI. MOST IMPORTANTLY: Have fun with your research and projects! I. Mythology – bookmarks Choose two mythological creatures/gods/goddesses from anywhere in the world (research Asian, African, Australian, European, American mythological beings and pick your favorites). For each, using a small piece of chart paper, create a bookmark. You can and should use both sides of the paper. Each bookmark must include: - the name of your chosen mythological being, in bold - a colored drawing depicting your chosen being - information about the title/offices (what their purpose was) - information about the culture/geographical area/time period associated with your chosen being - a fact/quote/theory/short story about your chosen being which interested you I am sure you will use your creative abilities to make the two bookmarks as informative and colorful as possible! II. The trial of Napoleon Bonaparte - front page news. For this project, you will need to research the French Revolution, and Napoleon Bonaparte, as well as how people are put on trial – prosecution, defense etc. If you have access to the internet, ask your parents to help you visit the following websites: http://www.history.com/topics/napoleon/videos/napoleon http://www.kidspast.com/world-history/0389-napoleon-bonaparte.php http://www.kidspast.com/world-history/0370-french-revolution.php Imagine that Napoleon has been put on trial in 1815, by the French. Think about what the prosecution will say about his actions as a leader of France. Think about how Napoleon’s lawyers will defend him. Now, consider what the front page of the newspaper in Paris looked like while Napoleon was on trial. On a chart paper, create this front page. Study the front page of the newspaper that comes to your house every day and make your front page as realistic as possible. Consider all of the following: - what is the name of the newspaper? - what is the headline? The main article should be about Napoleon’s trial - about how the prosecution is attacking him and about how his lawyers are defending him. Did Napoleon testify? Do you think he's guilty or innocent and why? - include a few smaller articles on the front page as well. These can be side stories about Napoleon – maybe about his wife or children. Or these can be about other events happening in France or the world in 1815. Do some research and find out what other events were going on in the world at this time. III. The Selfie - a research report In 2013, just two years ago, “selfie” officially became a word according to the Oxford Dictionary. Are selfies really only just a few years old, however? Are self-portraits, made by artists hundreds of years ago different forms of selfies too? For this assignment, study three self-portraits by different artists and three “selfies” (these may be your selfies, selfies of people you know or of celebrities). Research the artists whose self-portraits you have chosen. What do they show about themselves – about their lives/culture/time – in their self-portraits? Study the selfies you have chosen, what are the people who have taken these selfies trying to show about themselves? Why do you think selfies have become increasingly popular over the last few years? In conclusion, do you find that self portraits by artists over the years are similar to “selfies”? Why or why not? Write a 300-500 word research report in which you describe your research, your sources and your opinion about the above questions. Be sure to include an introduction and a conclusion, and include pictures of the self-portraits and selfies you are studying. If you have access to the internet, ask your parents to help you visit the following websites to help your research [this is not compulsory]: http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/jul/14/how-selfies-became-a-global-phenomenon http://www.socialmediatoday.com/content/selfie-phenomenon-infographic http://www.visual-arts-cork.com/genres/self-portraits.htm Science 1.
