Welcome – Haere mai
Welcome to the 24th edition of State of the Arts – South Taranaki Arts Bulletin.
We have the privilege of hosting two national art awards in
South Taranaki. These awards offer opportunities for local
artists to exhibit, as well as bringing in new works to
inspire, educate and open up new branches of creativity.
The annual Lysaght Watt Trust Awards in Hawera is
currently on show, attracting a wide range of artworks
from throughout New Zealand, including ceramics,
sculpture, painting, printmaking and photography. Judged
by Simon Rees, Director at Govett Brewster Art Gallery, the
theme Daily Life was explored in diverse and original ways.
Opunake’s Taranaki National Art Awards celebrates 15
years in 2016 and is now open for entries.

June brings the Taranaki Arts Trail to the region - I encourage you to take this rare opportunity to peek inside
the artist studios and see what makes them tick, learn more about their process and gain a greater
understanding about what goes into creating a work of art. The Parihaka Puanga Kai Rau Festival is back again
this year, offering a unique marae experience to celebrate the Māori new year. The fusion of art, gardening,
music, kai and culture focuses on new beginnings and giving thanks to our tupuna (ancestors).
Thanks to all of you who have completed the recent Arts Satisfaction Survey. Your feedback helps to direct
planning for the year ahead. This edition offers plenty of opportunities to participate and enjoy the arts - go well
and enjoy!
Warm regards,

patterns. Mareta Marsters-Grubner is well known for her rich and colourful local
murals and she also creates lively mosaics and mixed media works.
Michaela Stoneman’s dedicated print studio will present a range of current work
and allow visitors to see etching and relief processes in action on the printing

Old Bank Space: Peter Peryer
29 May – 26 June 2016
New Plymouth’s former TSB Bank has been re-imagined as a temporary public space, with the iconic building
housing exhibitions including work by renowned contemporary local artists. The first of these exhibitions will
showcase the work of one of New Zealand’s leading photographers, Peter Peryer. Twelve years since New
Plymouth has seen a solo exhibition by Peryer, more than 20 of his works, both photographs and sculpture, will
be on display. This collection has been carefully selected to complement the architecture of the space and to
capture the character of Taranaki. Young Taranaki artist Andrew Beck will exhibit in the Old Bank Space
through July, then there will be a moving image exhibition through August.
Open: 10.00 am – 6.00 pm Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 10.00 am – 9.00 pm Thursday
Closed Tuesdays and Christmas Day.
