Life Experiences is in the business of helping adults
with disabilities help themselves.
Harry H. Montgomery
was an early benefactor and Board Chairman of Life
Experiences. An avid golfer and sports enthusiast,
he was a college football official, the quarterback
and captain of the 1935 UNC 9-1 football team,
an Honorable-mention All-American, and the
Patterson Medal winner, awarded to the outstanding
senior athlete in all sports in 1936.
During WWII, he was commander of LCI 489
which participated in Operation Overlord at
Omaha Beach, shuttling over 4500 troops to
the Normandy beachhead and rescuing 241
sailors from a sinking Susan B. Anthony two
days later.
A former President of the Downtown Raleigh
Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow, he was
on the Board of Directors of the Boys Scouts
and President of The UNC General Alumni
Association and on the Board of Visitors.
At various times in his career he was either
President or Chairman of the United Fund,
Lions Club, Salvation Army, Chamber of
Commerce, and Community Chest Fund.
Harry was President of W.H. King Drug Co. and
retired as President of ICN Pharmaceuticals,
Wholesale Operations. Upon his death in 1988,
the first Life Experiences golf tournament was
named in his memory.
Life Experiences was formed in an attempt to mesh
social and business goals into one environment for
adults with disabilities in Wake County. Incorporated
in 1978, the non-profit organization offers a choice
of satisfying work experiences for adults with varying
disabilities and at the same time allows those adults the
self-esteem of earning a wage for their work.
The Harry H. Montgomery, Life Experiences Auction and Golf Tournament is the largest fund raiser
of the year for this great organization. The on-going
support and direct participation from the Cary, Apex,
and Morrisville Rotary Clubs have been instrumental
in making this event a huge success. Over the past
28 years, this event has netted over $1,225,000 for

Prestonwood Country Club Grand Ballroom. There
are items to bid on in both Silent and Live Auctions
including trips, artwork, sports outings, restaurant

who strongly desire to work in a program such as
ours, but we will be able to expand our opportunity to
more people. Thanks to the hard work and generous
contributions of many people, we built a new facility
in 2002. Our new building is twice the size of our
old facility and has allowed us to add more business
opportunities.
