Cardigan Short Mat Bowls
Mydroilyn Stun Llechryd
With seven games last week, due to the previous week’s elections, Llechryd had the opportunity to really
turn on the pressure for several clubs, but they had a nightmare of a week as both Penrhiwllan and
Mydroilyn left their dream in tatters. In their first game, Penrhiwllan managed to dominate three of the
games, whilst Bill and David were able to salvage a couple of points by winning their pairs game. As
Kenneth reported “In the singles I opened the scoring in the first end by taking 2 shots then never
managed to get on the score board again until the 10th and 11th ends, which by that time was to late losing 15-6. The pairs with Bill and David were the only two of the team to play well winning 14-9 ,
whilst in the triples and rinks the Penrhiwllan teams were in fine form, winning 18-6 and 17-4
respectively.”
Just when they felt let down by their away game, they welcomed Mydroilyn with the hope of acquiring
about six points, but Mydroilyn had other ideas and it was only in the singles game where Jake took two
shots on the final end to match Kenneth’s score to grab the 8-8 draw. The pairs went into a 5-1 lead
only to throw it away to lose 10-8. The triples went a similar way from leading 10-5 with three ends to
go. Sadly they lost all three ends losing 11-10 with an excellent never-say-die attitude of the Mydroilyn
team. In the rinks it was a similar story with the Llechryd team needing 3 shots to win with just one wood
to go they were holding the necessary shots. But David bowling for Mydroilyn had two excellent last
woods to stop the home team getting the shots required, resulting in the home team losing 7-9.
However it was a very good night of bowling, with the games going either way, but not for Llechryd.
There was only five shots between the two teams, but a points tally of 1-7 on the night.
So out of a possible sixteen points, Llechryd were left with just three.
In other games there were mixed results as the top games seemed to all have a touch of nerves, with
draws for four of the teams.
Orllwyn also had a marvellous evening on Friday grabbing three points off title-seekers Manordeifi, who
must have been hoping for more. As Alan reported “Orllwyn really like playing at Manordeifi, and it
shows in their play. They dig in, fight for every shot and never give up.
The start was good for the home team, however, with wins in both the singles and the pairs. The singles
saw Steve develop a lead, then Nesta coming back, but never quite enough to threaten the result. The
away team won the first two ends of the pairs, but a couple of 4's helped Manordeifi establish a lead that
was flattering - but it felt like a close match all the way through. Joseph was very unlucky on two
consecutive ends to trail the jack just too far and he lost a shot on each end when he deserved to win
both. It could easily have been a very close scoreline as well.
The triples and rinks were a different story. After a nip and tuck start in the triples, and the score at 3 - 3,
Orllwyn turned up the heat with some very accurate bowling to take 1, 3, 4, 1 on the next four ends to
take them out of sight and secure a very well deserved win.
The fours seemed to be going the way of the visitors but Mike's team pulled back from behind to lead 8 6 going into the last end. From the sidelines it looked as if Mike had covered all the risks and was
holding Gwynfor's team to a single shot, with Mike holding 2nd, 3rd and 4th shots and looking secure.
However, with the last wood of the match Gwynfor saw the tiniest of opportunities to tap out what
seemed to be the 4th wood, fall back and take 2nd shot to tie the game. Cracking shot!”
Cilgerran also stumbled as only the fours held on, on their own mat, to keep two points as Pencnwc took
six away with them. As Pat said afterwards “It was a very welcome 6 points for Pencnwc (which I wasn't
expecting) from our visit to Cilgerran on Friday.
The first half went Pencnwc's way with both the singles and the pairs winning. Aaron and Neil had a
very close game, with Neil, once again, losing a 4 on the eleventh end, so taking this match to the wire.
(Why does he put us through this torture?) He was 10-9 down and needed to do something special,
which he did, putting down two perfect woods to win the game 10-11.
Meanwhile the inexperienced Pencnwc pair of Lewis and Irene pulled off an unexpected win over Hywel
and Michael coming out 9-13 winners. I must congratulate them: I was only trying them out together to
see what would happen!
The triples led by Jill and Pat was an excellent match, as quite often happens when Jill and Pat go
against each other. With both leads struggling to find their line it was left to the twos and skips to battle
this one out. The final score of 5-9 (Pencnwc took seven out of the ten ends) doesn't show what a hard
won game this was. I have to commend Chris Jones on his excellent drawing game.
So to the fours which Cilgerran won 12-7, so bringing to an end John's unbeaten record so far this
season. Again, the leads and number twos all seemed to be struggling, which left the back end fighting
this one out. From what I could see Barry played extremely well. So - the match was over and the
entertainment began. Pencnwc stood by in amazement whilst the electric roller-upper did it's job (envy!
envy!). We were so taken with this wonderful bit of equipment we almost forgot to partake of our tea
(cream scones again - oh you do spoil us).”
Dolphins have had a terrible season so far, so after recent form, Tygwydd must have been hoping for
some success again – only to find Dolphins swimming in the right current to take six points – doubling
their total for the whole season!

County Fours Competition – All Rhydlewis Final
With eleven teams competing on Saturday, it ended up with an all-Rhydlewis final.
The teams were split into two groups of five and six who each played each other fairly
constantly all day. Only in the group of five, was any team able to sit out and watch, whilst the
other group were playing all the time. Eric Harries, the County Organiser, commented how in
the League games, the fours takes about three-quarters of an hour, but in the County
competitions, they last for over an hour!
The winners of Group A were Wyn Davies, Medwyn Jones, Natasha Roberts, and Ceri Jones
whilst their club-mates won Group B – Avril Williams, Alun Thomas, Carwyn Evans and Robert
Evans. These two teams then played a very close game until about the sixth end when the
Group A winners took a 3 to lead 7-3 – a lead they kept until the end.
Meanwhile the best runners-up from Group A – Marlene Davies, Nick Fountain, Pat and Steve
Reynolds from Manordeifi, took on the best runners-up from Group B – Moira Harries, Gavin
Jones and Norma Beauchamp from Pencnwc with Glanmore Jones from Capel Dewi. This was
a fairly one-sided affair with the Manordeifi team in command until the seventh end. However
the combined team then rallied and secured a victory in the final end to secure the final slot in
the team to represent the County in the National competitions in January.
