WorkshopSchedule
Participantswillbedividedintosmallgroupswithtwoassignedmentors.Each
groupwillattendtwoofthefollowingsessions:
1. IdentifyingYourUniqueLeadershipStylewithHeatherHurley
Throughhands-onactivities,studentswilllearnaboutdifferentleadership
qualities.Theywilldefinetheirpersonalleadershipstyleandlearnhowthat
leadershipstyleaffectshowtheyworkwithothersinaschoolsetting.
2. BrandingYourselfasaLeaderwithJuliaBurgos
Inthisworkshop,participantswillbeintroducedtotheconceptofpersonal
brandingasitrelatestopeople,relationships,communicationsandone’s
digitalfootprint.Throughaninteractivesession,participantswillgaina
betterunderstandingoffirstimpressions,preparingforleadershiprolesand
creatingapersonalbrandcanvasandbrandpositioningstatement.These
toolswillserveasthebackdroptobuildingapersonalbrandportfoliothat
canhelpdefinehowtheyareperceivedincurrentdayatschoolandpavethe
pathforastrongleadershipbrandfortheirfutures.Attheconclusionofthis
session,participantswillhavelearnedkeystrategiesandconceptsin
brandingthatwillcreateasolidfoundationforafuturefilledwith
opportunitiesandchoices.
3. CreatingYourOwnMediaofEmpowermentwithGladisBourdouane
Doyouwanttoinspireothers?Doyouwantotherstotakeactionforacause
youbelievein?Whatmediachannels/outletsareavailabletospreadyour
message?
Ms.Bourdouanewillwalkyouthroughtheprocessofcraftingkeymessages
tocommunicateyourgoals,andtomotivatethepublictotakeaction.Shewill
showyouhowtocreateacommunicationsplan;andshowcasesomeofthe
variouscommunicationsplatformsthatareavailabletoreachthepublic,
includingsocialmedia,printandnewsmedia,e-communications,andfaceto-faceengagement.Shewillalsosharemethodsofmeasuringthesuccessof
yourcommunicationsandengagementefforts.
4. SpeakingYourTruththroughSpokenWordwithElizabethAcevedo
Thisworkshopwillleadstudentsthroughaseriesofperformanceand
writingexercisesthatwillhoneinontheconcept,“speakingback.”Girlsare
oftentoldwhoandwhattheyneedtobeand,inthisworkshop,theywillbe
askedtopickonqualityofthemselvestheyreallyloveandspeakbackto
folkswhohavetoldthemnegativethingsaboutthatquality.Thethemewill
befocusedenoughthatthegirlswillhaveanentrypointintothinkingand
writing,butopenenoughthattheydon’tallfeelforcedtopickthesametopic.
5. TheatreofLeadership:Presence,Voice,&PerformanceSkillsforFuture
LeaderswithDr.LaTanyaCatron
Throughimprovisation,role-play,andothertheatretrainingtechniques,
participantswillbeintroducedtoskillsthatwillhelpthemtobuild
confidence,exertinfluence,andcommunicateeffectively.Theskillsactors
usetoconvince,move,andinspirehavedirectapplicationstotheworkof
leaders.“Greatleaders,likegreatactors,mustbeconfident,energetic,
emphatic,inspirational,credible,andauthentic”(Halpern&Lubar,2004).
6. SportsasaVehicleforLeadershipwithJenniferGross
Inthisworkshop,wewillbringlighttothenumberofwaysinwhichsports
actasacatalystforleadershiproles.Wewillbringtolightthemanyqualities
thatittakestobeagoodathleteanddrawparallelstothewaysthatdirectly
correlatestoleadershiproles.Girlswillworkinteamsinavarietyof
interactiveactivitiesthatwillchallengethemtothinkaboutsportsinaway
theymayneverhavebefore.
7. LeadingbyExample:StandinguptoEverydayBullyingandInjusticewith
TaraNewton
Thisworkshopwillengagestudentsinaninteractivedialoguethatwill
includeaquizshow,role-play,andquestionsandanswers.Italsowillcover
thefollowingdiscussionpoints:movieclipaddressingbullying,defining
bullying,characterprofileofabully,definingempathy,characterprofileofa
leader.
8. ConflictResolution:TakingaStandintheMidstofConflictwithDr.Tiffini
Woody-Pope
Participantswillexplorecommonwaysconflictsdevelopandeffectiveforms
ofcommunicationthatrespectdifferences.Thisinteractiveworkshopwill
askparticipantstoengagethroughconversations,role-playsandcritical
discussionsthatassistinmutualunderstanding.
9. Team-buildingforFutureLeaderswithSylviaO’Neal
Participantswillbeengagedinhandsonactivitieswhiletheymeetandgreet
withfemaleleaders.Theywillworkinteamstoidentifyteam-buildingskills
neededforfutureleadersandshareoutasagroup.
10. PoliticsandAdvocacy:MakingLastingChangeinYourCommunitywith
DulceCarrillo
Isthereanimportantissuethatyoucareabout?Inthisworkshop,youwill
havetheopportunitytothinkaboutsomethingthataffectsyouoryourfellow
communitymembersandtoconsiderwaystoimproveitbyincreasingyour
understandingandengagingothersintoaction.Ms.Carrillowillsharebasic
principlesofpoliticsandadvocacyandprovideyouwithbasictoolsonhow
youcanmakelastingchangesinyourcommunity.Youandyourpeerswill

inAtlanta,Georgia.Tara’sprofessionalbackgroundisintheareaofchildwelfare
andshemaintainsaspecialinterestinadolescentdevelopmentandmentalhealth.
TaraisaLicensedClinicalSocialWorker(LCSW)whoisdevotedtoservingchildren
andfamilieswithintheAlexandriaCityPublicSchools’districtandshealsoservesas
aclinicalconsultantwiththeUnitedStatesDepartmentofDefense.Ms.Newton’s

Dr.TiffiniWoody-PopeisaSchoolCounselorwhohasapassionforworkingwith
