No. 382 The weekly newsletter for The Junior King’s School, Canterbury 7 October 2016 From the Headmaster Our sports teams have enjoyed considerable success this week; the U13 boys winning The Shapira Cup against strong opposition from nine other prep schools. The U13 girls’ hockey team also performed with great skill to gain third place in the East of England Championships – well done to all those involved! Above: 1st team who won the Shapira Cup on Wednesday beating Holmewood House 4-0 in the final. Below: U13A Hockey team with their Bronze medals from the Regionals IAPS. Bottom: Scenes from Outings Day. Our Outings Day proved to be hugely popular, once again, this year and it was good to see all the classes enjoying some great activities. Our Harvest theme in Chapel this week has focused on those less fortunate than ourselves and what we can do to help. The Harvest Festival on Friday provided all members of the school with a chance to contribute items of food for those in need. We had a generous response to send to our charities, Catching Lives and the Canterbury Food Bank. The school service this Sunday will be led by Canon Norman Woods at 10.00am in the Herbert Music School. We look forward to a lively message and a choral contribution. Parents are always most welcome. My thanks must go to Gill Staziker and Verity Rowe from the Friends’ Committee for organising the special EGM and breakfast for parents to vote in the new Friends’ Constitution. This was unanimously approved and so the Friends’ organisation is now a fully-fledged charity. The students have enjoyed special lessons linked to exploring how different forms of communication have inspired poets in different ways in the past: from the flippant, to the emotive, to the surreal. As in previous years, the English Department are running a competition to tie-in with the theme of National Poetry Day. There will be three categories (Junior House, Middle School and Upper School) and three prizes per category. Students may only enter one poem each and the deadline is Friday 11th November. We have been very impressed with the standard on show in previous years and hope to see the talent of Junior King’s on display once again. This Is Just To Say I have eaten the plums that were in the icebox This is a vitally important area for all parents and children in this day and age. Next Saturday we are delighted that Mr Murray Letham, known to many of us, is returning to talk to all parents who are able to come, and all pupils in The Middle and Upper Schools. These talks will take place in The Barn at the following times (please note these are slightly different to the ones published in the calendar): and which you were probably saving for breakfast Forgive me they were delicious so sweet and so cold by William Carlos Williams /RA Internet Safety 8.50-9.50: Parents 10.00-10.55: Middle School 11.20-12.15: Upper School Please make every effort to attend. /ST Year 8 Trip to Rye Above & below: Year 8 at Rye Year 8 set off for Rye under grey skies, but happily spirits were anything but leaden. Although the weather was a little disappointing, the children had a wonderful day out. They spent half the day doing either windsurfing or kayaking at Rye Watersports Centre (sadly it was too windy for the sailing option), and the other half of the day exploring the beautifully quaint and picturesque centre of Rye. We were treated to a Son et Lumière history of the area in the Heritage Centre, involving an unbelievably detailed model of the town that a retired couple had spent four years making. There was then the opportunity for a bit of retail therapy and the chance to compare the relative merits of the sweets and ice creams of Rye with those of Sturry. The staff at the Watersports Centre sent an email saying how impressed they were with the children, and the staff of Junior King’s would like to echo that sentiment. You were a delight to take out, and thank you for being such willing participants and such excellent company. /ST The Junior King’s School, Sturry, Canterbury, Kent CT2 OAY — T: 01227 714000 — : @JuniorKingsSch www.junior-kings.co.uk The Week — No. 382 7 October 2016 From Junior House Junior House stars of the week this week are: Edward, Sam T, Oscar F, Auberon and William S. Well done to all of you. This week we have held our hustings and elections for the school committees and the results will be announced next week. I would like to thank all the Junior House children and parents for contributing so generously to the harvest collection. We have been overwhelmed by the amount of produce stored in our form rooms this week! There will be Year 3 parents’ meetings on Monday and Mrs Chandler and I look forward to seeing parents to discuss progress and next steps. I hope you will enjoy the photos from our school outings day. The children had a wonderful time! Have a good weekend. /LAW The Junior King’s School, Sturry, Canterbury, Kent CT2 OAY — T: 01227 714000 — : @JuniorKingsSch www.junior-kings.co.uk The Week — No. 382 7 October 2016 Year 7 Trip to Howletts The Year 7’s embarked upon an intrepid adventure into the depths of Howletts Wild Animal Park. Our park guide for the day was wild animal expert Sam who delivered three incredibly interesting and informative talks regarding the monkeys, the Red River Hogs and the elephants. We learnt a great deal about the conservation efforts of the Aspinall Foundation, their successful breeding programmes and reservation projects in Africa and Java where they help to protect some of the world’s most endangered animals. Howletts is home to the largest African elephant herd in Europe and between them they eat 100 kilos of carrots every single day! Our thanks to Miss Scott-Kilvert for organising such a great day and for being chief photographer. A huge well done to Year 7 for their exemplary behaviour and good spirits. Some of the animals were a little camera shy and it was sometimes tricky to spot them in their enclosures, however we had some fantastic views of the elephants, rhinos, lions, tigers, deer, bison, monkeys, wolves and gorillas. /FL & CB The heavens opened whilst we enjoyed a tasty packed lunch outside the Pavilion Restaurant. However, the rain could not dampen the Year 7’s spirits as they tackled the Tree Tops Challenge, climbing swiftly and easily like monkeys through the obstacle course in the heights of the Kentish woodland. There were numerous challenges to test their agility and balance and many of the pupils commented that the Treetops Challenge was the highlight of the day. Even the staff undertook the challenge – Miss Martin definitely won the prize for the most graceful zip wire descent unlike many others who landed with a thump upon the muddy mound at the end! The children were captivated by the opportunity to walk through the submarine, Ocelot and to experience being onboard a warship, HMS Cavalier. Another highlight of the trip was our rope making workshop; pupils learnt to make rope and how to tie bowline and reef knots. They were amazed by the 500 metre ropery, the longest brick built building in Europe. After the obligatory visit to the shop it was time to head off to bowling. There were some interesting techniques and some impressive scores. Try as he might, Mr Pollard couldn't achieve the top score and was beaten by both Nathan and William! It was a fantastic day and one that was enjoyed by staff and pupils alike. /CP Clockwise from above: Year 5 at Chatham Dockyards; Learning how to tie bowline knots; Steering one of the ships. This equates to swimming 120 lengths of the King’s Recreation pool, each week! I am now finding it much easier and well on the way to reaching the 22 mile target by December. What really motivates me to go swimming either at 6am or at night after a long day at work, is the knowing that the money I raise will help support people suffering from spinal-related injuries. Having seen the lasting impact of such spinal-related injuries on people I know, I feel compelled to do something for a good cause. I would like to raise £500, having already reached my previous target of £200 and would therefore welcome any further donations, using this link, to help such an important cause. Many thanks. /Chris Lapthorn Sports Results Monday 3rd October Football Colts A v St Edmund’s Junior King’s won 3 - 0 Football 1st XI Shapira Cup Junior King’s won Players of the Tournament: The Whole Team Wednesday 5th October 3rd XI v Yardley Court Match drawn 1 - 1 Hockey U13A Regional IAPS Junior King’s were bronze medallists Players of the Tournament: The Whole Team U13C v Northbourne Park Junior King’s won 3 - 0 Players of the Match: The Whole Team U13D v Northbourne Park Junior King’s won 3 - 1 Player of the Match: Lande U11A v Ashford Ashford won 2 - 1 Player of the Match: Freya U11B v Ashford Ashford won 6 - 1 Players of the Match: Maddie & Zahra U11C v Ashford Ashford won 6 - 0 Player of the Match: Caitlin Thursday 6th October Hockey U9A v Spring Grove Spring Grove won 3 - 1 Players of the Match: Emily & Iris U9B v Spring Grove Spring Grove won 8 - 0 Players of the Match: Sophia & Darcey 4th XI v Yardley Court Match drawn 0 - 0 Players of the Match: Osakwe & Harrison Football U9 Lions v St Faiths Junior King’s won 3 - 1 Players of the Match: The Whole Team 5th XI v Yardley Court Yardley Court won 4 - 2 Player of the Match: Santi U9 Pumas v St Faiths Junior King’s won 5 - 0 Players of the Match: The Whole Team Colts A v New Beacon New Beacon won 7 - 0 Player of the Match: Nathan Friday 7th October Colts B v New Beacon New Beacon won 8 - 0 Player of the Match: Noah Colts C v New Beacon New Beacon won 10 - 0 Players of the Match: Ben, Esphandiar & Daniel Hockey U11A Regional IAPS Junior King’s reached the Quarter Finals Players of the Tournament: The Whole Team Colts D v New Beacon New Beacon won 7 - 0 Player of the Match: Faisal The Junior King’s School, Sturry, Canterbury, Kent CT2 OAY — T: 01227 714000 — : @JuniorKingsSch www.junior-kings.co.uk The Week — No. 382 7 October 2016 From the Upper School This has been a fantastic week for our sports teams. We are delighted for the boys that they won The Shapira Cup on Wednesday, and many congratulations to all those who took part. Well done also to the U13A hockey team who were placed 3rd in the recent East of England IAPS competition. On Thursday many people enjoyed a lovely informal concert, and well done to all who performed. The church looked amazing this morning with all the donations for Harvest. Thank you to all of you for your support not only for that, but also for the Macmillan Coffee Morning and non-uniform day last Friday. Looking ahead to next week, the annual Inter-House X-Country competition takes place on Friday at 3.15pm, and all spectators are of course very welcome. Next Saturday Mr Murray Letham is coming to talk to parents and pupils about internet safety. The parents’ talk will be in The Barn from 8.50 to 9.50, and all are warmly invited to attend this very informative and important talk. A letter will be e-mailed out to parents with a request to let Mrs Jerman know if you are coming. Finally, it is lovely to see so many Upper School pupils wearing the new jumper. Blazers must still be worn at all times, however; these are compulsory, whereas the jumpers are optional. /ASK & ST Ex JKS Fencers in record breaking Fencing event On Sunday the 25th September 2016 the school hosted the 2nd of this seasons British U17 Ranking Fencing event. The event sponsored by Bang & Olufsen Canterbury, broke all records for an Under 17 Fencing event in the UK, with over 500 fencers, parents and spectators. The refereeing team was led by recently retired Olympic referee Mike Thornton, featured several recent OKS and also Jake Evans (Year 8) as a referees assistant. In the hardest U17 girls event in over 20 years, Douce De Boisesilin of King’s Canterbury finished 9th, narrowly losing 14-15. Hjalmar Johansson still only 14, finished 33rd in the boys event. King's South African International and form JKS pupil Liam Brazier finished 37th. The event also saw recent leavers from JKS at this age group who aquitted themselves well with Roman Sokolov (13) winning 2 of his 6 fights in the group stages, with Constantin d’Orleans, Ethan Snee, George Yeh and Finn Mullen also performing well. Headmasters Peter Wells, Peter Roberts and Bang & Olufsen's Jonathan Hill presented the prizes and medals to the winners. The event also raised £458 for The Great Ormond Street Hospital. /JMiller The Junior King’s School, Sturry, Canterbury, Kent CT2 OAY — T: 01227 714000 — : @JuniorKingsSch www.junior-kings.co.uk The Week — No. 382 7 October 2016 From the Middle School Thank you This has been another busy week both in and out of the classroom. The Year 5’s had a lovely trip to the Canterbury Heritage museum as part of their Humanities programme. We are so lucky to have so many wonderful resources available to us to help bring the curriculum alive. I would like to thank Mr Finnis and his team for all the effort they put in to making these trips so enjoyable. to all who contributed to our Macmillan Cancer Support fundraising on 30th September. We raised a magnificent £1328.42 through our coffee morning and non-uniform day. Our Assembly this week was in year groups and we discussed the importance of the student voice. The children were told about the different opportunities there were for them to become involved. The elections for the School Council and the Arts and Catering Committees will be taking place at the end of next week. It is important that those pupils wishing to put their names forward contact either myself or Mrs Pattinson. As I write this the Under 11A girls are on their way to the IAPS Regionals. By the time you read this their tournament will have finished but I would like to remind you that news of sporting and other events can be found on the school twitter account. I will certainly have been eagerly following their progress. Those people who have looked at the calendar for next week will have seen that Middle School are having a TASC day next Tuesday. This has been organised by Mrs Pattinson and will be a very exciting opportunity for the children to work collaboratively. The TASC framework, shown by the wheel below, is used to develop pupils’ problem solving and thinking skills. It will be great experience and something they will really enjoy. This is the song we have been singing as we built our very own Nursery scarecrow. Scarecrow Sam won’t be scaring any birds away from our garden, though. He is a very friendly chap. We created him together using teamwork and our problem-solving skills. First, we had to work out what he might look like, then we came up with ideas for how we could make his hands, body and face. We found that shredded paper ‘straw’ makes a perfect body, mittens work well as hands and we carefully cut out shapes to make Sam’s smiling face. As you can see, our new Nursery member has settled in well and has lots of new friends! You can meet some of Sam’s scarecrow friends in the Westgate Park tomorrow, Saturday 8th October. Visit this link to find out more. 7 October 2016 We enjoyed a very special visit from Daniela’s Mummy, Mrs Kozlova in the Nursery this week. As part of our special Nursery Garden project, we planted a tree, which Mrs Kozlova has given to us. We have been learning how to look after it so it grows bigger and bigger and gives us shade in the summer. It is an Acer and the leaves are turning a beautiful Autumn colour. Thank you, Mrs Kozlova, for a lovely gift. And thank you, too, to our groundsmen, who took care to plant it well and will help us to look after it. Congratulations, Casper! What a g r e a t performance you gave playing your violin at the Junior King’s School Informal Co ncer t t his week. We are all very proud of you. Well done. Year 1 boarded a bus bound for Wild Wood this week. We went nose-to-nose with British wildlife past and present and spotted wolves, otters, deer, owls, foxes, wild boar, badgers, a lynx and some red squirrels, which look very different to the squirrels we have in the Mini Forest at school. After an exhausting tour of these animals’ homes, we enjoyed our packed lunch, while we talked about our day so far and learned how to help look after Britain’s wildlife. And to round off another perfect trip, we enjoyed ourselves at the amazing adventure playground. The Junior King’s School, Sturry, Canterbury, Kent CT2 OAY — T: 01227 714000 — : @JuniorKingsSch www.junior-kings.co.uk The Week — No. 382 This week Year 2 have been learning all about different habitats around the world. When asked “What should we use to research habitats?” our resounding answer was “Google!” We partnered up and used iPads to research our chosen habitat. Using our IT and investigation skills, we learned all about how animals need specific habitats to live in, otherwise they just wouldn’t survive. Imagine finding a polar bear living in a tropical rainforest or a monkey living in the ocean! That would just be silly! 7 October 2016 We continue our study of 2D shapes in our Reception maths lessons. This week, we created our own pictures from a selection of pre-cut gummed shapes. We all got very involved as we learned how to choose the right shape to create the best effect and reject those that aren’t quite right. We made pictures to show lots of 2D examples, including a 2-storey house, brothers and sisters, Mummy in a frame and Mummy and Daddy hugging each other at their wedding! Amazing what you can do with a few shiny shapes. Our Pre-Prep Harvest Festival is next Friday, 14th October. Please join us for a special service in St Nicholas’ Church at 9.00am, followed by our annual Harvest Market, which this year will be held in the PrePrep Hall. We welcome donations for our market, including anything from cut flowers and cuttings from your gardens, to fresh eggs and from home-made jams, jellies and marmalades to delicious baked goodies. We will sell your donations back to you and every penny we raise will be given to Wrap Pyjama Fairies, a charity dedicated to making children feel more comfortable in hospital, making delightful and novel pyjamas and surgical gowns (www.wrappyjamafairies.co.uk). So don’t forget to bring lots of cash and carrier bags! Contributions should be given to your child’s class teacher on the morning of the Market, but please The Pre-Prep Fencing Club are getting to grips with a remember we are a nut-free school and we cannot foam épée. Mr Miller says they’re an awesome group! refrigerate any fresh food. Pre-Prep Notice Board Parent Meetings – Saturday 15th and Monday 17th October: Sign-up sheets will be on our noticeboard at the front door (or in the Nursery) on Monday morning, 10th October. Please put your name down to meet your child’s teacher and find out how they have been getting on in their first term this year. Please note that if you plan to come on Saturday you may need to consider childcare arrangements. Clubs and Late Club will run as usual on Monday evening. Internet Safety Talk – Saturday 15th October: Pre-Prep parents are invited to attend an internet safety talk at 8.30am in The Barn on Saturday 15th October, but please be aware that no children may attend.
