If You Are New to Mount Oak
If you are new to Mount Oak we want to welcome you to our church and
answer a few basic questions you may have.
Who Are We?
Mount Oak Fellowship is a Bible-believing Christian church that is open to
everyone. We are part of the Baltimore-Washington Conference of the
United Methodist Church but also maintain a distinct, evangelical identity.
What Do We Believe?
We believe that God is real, that the Bible is true and relevant to us today,
and that Jesus Christ is “the way” that God has given us to know Him in
this life. We are also a part of the faith tradition of John Wesley who invited
people to come to Christ as they were - in the belief that everyone can
come to know God and grow in their faith.
What Types of Worship Services Do We Offer?
Mount Oak offers an early service that worships using a spiritual but
traditional format at 8:45 AM. We offer a later service at 10:30 AM that is
contemporary in style. We believe that God is present during both. In
addition to this, during the school year we offer a Wednesday evening
program for all ages which features a fellowship meal and age based studies.
Is There A Place For My Child?
Yes, your children are welcome to remain with you during either worship
service, or to participate in the following ministries that are offered during
the 10:30 service:
Nursery for birth to 23 months in room 104 (begins at 10:30)
The Toddler Class for 2 &3 year olds in room 201 (begins at 10:30)
(Kingdom Kids classes beginning immediately after Praise and Worship)
Kingdom Kids Pre-K Class for ages 4-6 in room 106
Kingdom Kids Elementary Class in room 107 for grades 1-5
(Please note we are in the process of building up the 8:45am early service
with Children's Programs!)
How Can I Learn More?
You can speak to Pastor Barnes directly, email him
([email protected]), call the church office (301-249-2230), or hang
around after the service and speak to one of our regular members. If we
can’t answer your question we will try to find someone who can!

Praising God Together
(adapted from Psalm 32:1-5)
Blessed is the one
whose transgressions are forgiven,
whose sins are covered.
Blessed is the one
whose sin the Lord does not count against them
and in whose spirit is no deceit.
When I kept silent my bones wasted away
through my groaning all day long.
For day and night your hand was heavy on me;
my strength was sapped
as in the heat of summer.
Then I acknowledged my sin to you
and did not cover up my iniquity.
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to
the Lord.”
And you forgave the guilt of my sin.

Eternal Father, we praise you for sending your Son to be one
of us and to save us. Look upon your people with mercy, for
we are divided in so many ways, and give us the Spirit of Jesus
to make us one in love. We ask this gift, loving Father,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Holy Sonnet #10
Death, be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so;
For those whom thou think'st thou dost overthrow
Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,
Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee do go,
Rest of their bones, and soul's delivery.
Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell,
And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well
And better than thy stroke; why swell'st thou then?
One short sleep past, we wake eternally
And death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die.

Opportunities to Get Involved
EMAIL PRAYER CHAIN
The Mt Oak Email Prayer Chain is available for all prayer requests and
praise reports. Send requests directly to [email protected] and mark them
Prayer Request/Praise Report. Please print your name and contact
information on each card you submit. Remember when you turn in a Prayer
card at church to mark Public (for distribution) or Confidential (for the
pastors). We cannot broadcast prayer concerns without your permission.
Please have all entries for the bulletin into the Church Office by Tuesday of
the week of the publication. Thank you.
CHURCH MEMBERSHIP CLASS
Are you interested in joining Mount Oak Fellowship? Do you have
questions about what it means to become a Christian and grow in
community with other believers? If so, we will be offering a membership
class for adult believers this winter and early spring. If you are interested,
please contact Pastor Barnes ([email protected]) or the church office
(301-249-2230) and provide the following information:



Name and Contact Information
Time that works best for you: (Saturday mornings, Sunday
afternoons, or Wednesday evenings)
Do you need childcare?
PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT
Mount Oak used to have commercial grade playground equipment in the
yard next to our church offices. The equipment was an open invitation for
families to pause after church and get to know each other. The church is
committed to making this a reality again. We have found several companies
which could sell and install what we are looking for at prices which range
from $19,000 to $22,000. So far we have $5,000 committed to this project.
If you would like to help remember, you might be too old to climb up a
slide but you are not too old to help the children of our church learn to
love coming here. (If you are interested in supporting this project please
see Gale TeSelle or Michele Herring)
VISITATION MINISTRY
Are you looking for a place to serve Christ? If so, Mount Oak is forming
and reforming our visitation ministry. If you would be interested in
becoming a part of a team of people who visit the sick, shut-ins and
newcomers (or any one of those groups) please contact Pastor Barnes at
[email protected] or 301-249-2230.

CURRENT SERMON SERIES - WHAT’S THE POINT?
Many of us have been Christians and church members seemingly forever.
Others of us are exploring our faith for the first time. In many ways we
have different spiritual needs based on our level of spiritual development
but one thing we all share in common is that we sometimes ask “What is
the Point?” We want to know thinks like: “What does it look like for a
person to become a mature follower of Jesus?” “When what I have been
doing has become stagnant what should I do next?” and “What is the goal
of my church participation?”
The answers are not always exactly the same for every individual, but the
questions are worth asking and so beginning on January 29th, the Sunday
messages will ask you to examine your faith and ask “What’s the Point?”
WEDNESDAYS IN THE WORD WOMEN’S STUDY:
PRIDE AND HUMILITY
Beginning this Wednesday night and for the next three months the ladies'
small group will meet in room 202 at 7:00 pm to study "Pride and
Humility: A Guide to Better Understanding Yourself and Others". This
study looks at 6 different varieties of pride (one of them good; the rest
bad), and 6 different aspects of true humility. The study reads much like a
daily devotional with a short reading to be done each day and then
discussion about the week’s readings on Wednesday nights. Note: Our
prayer time will continue, as it is a source of great encouragement and helps
us to love one another better. All ladies are welcome! -Linda Barnes
MAUNDY THURSDAY PLAY
Holy Week is the time set aside every year in which we remember and
meditate upon Jesus’ suffering and death. This year Carol Edner will be
directing a play which reenacts the Last Supper. The play will be performed
on Maundy Thursday, April 13th, at 7:00 pm in our Fellowship Hall. Carol is
in the process of “casting” for the play and so if you are interested in taking
part please contact her in person, by phone 301-925-7360 or by email at
[email protected].
SINGING TO GOD CAN BRING YOU CLOSER TO GOD!
A few years ago Mount Oak restarted their sanctuary choir under the
leadership of Jackie Grace. After Pastor Jerry retired, Linda Barnes
assumed Jackie’s position as choir director. Our choir is not bad at all and
we enjoy making a “joyful noise” together. That said we could use a few
more voices. If you can sing and would like to offer your voice to God,
then come and join us on Wednesday nights at 8:00 pm. Remember, you
don’t have to be a superstar; you just need to own a bucket to carry a tune
in.
2017 WOMEN’S RETREAT
Ladies: the retreat is approaching! It will be Friday evening to Sunday
afternoon, April 28th - 30th. The theme will be "Tailor-Made" and the
retreat will be led by 2 lovely missionary ladies who are traveling from
Brazil and South Carolina (that one is usually in Italy) just for us! The
retreat will take place at Camp Pecometh in Centreville, MD. The cost is
only $60, so be sure to reserve your spot today. There will be someone at
the exit of both services to help you sign up.

Church News and Updates
FINANCIAL UPDATE
The church budget for the year 2016 was $504,000. We actually spent
$495,000 and received in offering $492,000. (This does not include money
given to missions or special projects) For 2017 we have increased our
budget to $533,516. The primary cause of this increase is our desire to hire
a part time children’s minister. In order to meet our budget we need to
receive $10,066/week. Last week we received $9,371. Thank you for your
faithful giving and remember that just as we serve the Lord together, we
meet our expenses together.
