Homefront Resource Center connects service members, veterans, and their families to community
Homefront Resource Center is
designed to be a premier, innovative,
campus-based center where
community resources can come
together to support service members,
veterans, and their families.
The center, in the heart of SCTCC
campus, will provide a welcoming
space for veterans to connect with
other veterans. In addition, center
staff and partners will help veterans
and their families connect with
and navigate local, state and federal
services and resources. Advocacy in
the areas of education, employment,
housing, wellness, and family also
will be available.
“We need to make sure we are doing
everything we can to support military
families and veterans,” President
Joyce Helens said. “It’s an honor to

opportunities and benefits available
to them through their service.

When the dental hygiene and dental
assisting programs moved to the new
Health Science Building in 2010, they
left an expanse of space in the center
of SCTCC’s largest building. Today,
a vision for that space includes multi-
purpose classrooms to serve the more
than 2,000 students in liberal arts and
sciences courses as well as an art lab.
Modular furniture would allow for
reconfiguring and repurposing for classes
of 35 or more students easily.
The renovation cost of $625,000 has
been submitted as a legislative capital
bonding request for 2016.

It’s a straightforward process for owner of Peter’s Body Shop
Roger Bonn began working at his
father’s auto body shop in high
school. He didn’t know much about
the work at the time, but thanks to
his mentor, Vern, he learned the tools
and tricks of the trade.
“You can’t do that anymore. You
can’t take 25 percent of your best
people’s time to teach new employees
from the ground floor.” Roger said.
“There’s simply too much pressure
about productivity.”
That’s where St. Cloud Technical &
Community College comes in.
“The college teaches students the
fundamentals, so when they get here
they can easily replace a bumper and
fix a dent in a door quickly,” Roger
explained. “They get exposed to new
technology too.”
Roger understands developing
curriculum for the industry is a
delicate balance between doing
what national organizations say is
important now for certification and
what local shops know to be their
reality day in and day out. That’s why
he’s an active member of SCTCC’s
Auto-body program advisory board
as well as local, state, and regional
trade organizations: to be a voice.
And he doesn’t stop there.
His investment of time, talent,
and funding extends beyond the
program that is most familiar to him.
In fact, Roger served as president
of the SCTCC Foundation Board
(which his father helped establish in
1996). He also was an unwavering
voice in the DRIVEN Campaign
for the renovation and expansion of
SCTCC’s autobody and medium/

forums, and legislative visits around
the state. Finally, his family has
invested in student success by
providing annual scholarships.
For him, it’s a natural part of doing
business.
“We want to give back to an industry
that has been very good to our
family and business. And we want
to help those who might not have
the wherewithal to change their
lives,” Roger said. “If we can attract
people to this industry and give back
to the industry, this will build up a
strong work force for years to come
and make a such difference in our
community.”

Why I Support Student Scholarships?
When I was growing up in Sri Lanka,
I was a member of a big family. We
were five boys and three girls. My
father was a hard-working science
and math teacher, and mother was a
homemaker. We did not have much
and shared whatever we had among
the siblings, the extended family
of uncles, aunts, and the village. It
was never a one-way street. Anyone
who had excess always shared with
others. When it comes to knowledge,
god’s gift, we shared it with anyone
without hesitation. I remember
the neighborhood kids stopping by
my house to clear doubts or ask a
question. I even remember times
when kids who lived a mile away
stopping by to ask questions. My
father and brothers explained answers
without any expectation.
When I came to the United States of
America to pursue higher education,
my older brothers brought my cousin
with me, put both of us through
college, and paid for our room, board
and education expenses without any
expectation of pay back. One of
my brothers passed away in 1998.
I dream of taking care of my other
brother when he is elderly, but he
does not have any expectation from
me.

that I give to St. Cloud Technical and
Community College Foundation.

When I started giving, I realized
happiness is seeing the fruits of

giving. If everyone helps and
supports our neighbors like back
home, we have a better community
to live in. Especially in St. Cloud. At
St. Cloud Technical and Community
College we do not give our students
a fish, but we teach them how to fish.
Imagine, if every one of our students
starts teaching the people whom they
know how to fish, all of us will be
better off. Rising tides raise all boats.
When everyone gains knowledge,
ignorance is wiped out. The world
will be a better place for all of us to
live in.
If you’ve been paying attention to
local media, no doubt you’ve seen
the news stories about the buzz
happening at St. Cloud Technical
and Community College. From the
tiny house project, to the new media
center and renovated classrooms,
to the Homefront Resource Center
for active military, veterans, and
their families. SCTCC is living
its core values of innovation and
collaboration in order to fulfill its
vision to be the school of choice for
so many smart, talented individuals.
I invest what it costs to buy a cheap
cup of coffee at the gas station every
day, a dollar. I encourage everyone
to invest a dollar a day in our
community’s future that will make a
huge impact to our students’ life and
our future.
The SCTCC Foundation exists to
undergird these efforts and help
make the vision a reality. We do
this by securing investments of
time, insight, and financial support
that has an immediate impact on
the educational experience at the
College, our students, and of course,
central Minnesota. And this year’s
investment has been great.

There’s still time!
Of note, the Foundation has
experienced a 25% increase in
faculty and staff giving, which
signals SCTCC provides more
than a job … it has a mission that
resonates. We also welcomed a 24%
increase in attendance at our annual
fundraising event “Night of 1,000
Laughs.” In addition, we’re grateful
for the continued support from
long-term investors, including U.S.
Bank and its grant to jumpstart the
Homefront Resource Center, Xcel
Energy scholarships for students in
the high-demand manufacturing
sector, and a Community Pillar grant
from Bernick’s Family Foundation
that routinely recognizes SCTCC’s
important role in the region.
The impact of this investment is far
reaching.
