Year 6—Hola Mexico! This half term, we are going to be exploring the unique country of Mexico from the ancient Mayan civilisation to the fun and intriguing festivals. National Curriculum As Writers, we will be writing our own narratives, focusing on developing characters, settings and the element of suspense. We will also use our own research to include accurate detail when writing reports. As Readers, we will look at a range of texts and books to help us research life in Mexico including the Day of the Dead festival. We will be focusing on vocabulary development and looking at the meaning of new words. As Mathematicians, we will be using short and long division methods in calculation and using these to solve worded problems. We will also be learning how to apply the four operations when working with fractions. As Scientists, we will be using the idea that light travels in straight lines to explain why shadows have the same shapes as the objects that cast them. As Artists, we will look at some traditional Mexican artists and apply the same techniques of shape, tone and texture to our own art work. As Design Technologists, we will be creating our own Mexican savoury feast! As Programmers and users of Technology, we will be designing, writing and debugging programs that accomplish specific goals. As Geographers, we will use map and satellite images to locate Mexico and identify human and physical features including major cities, mountain ranges and tourist resorts. As Historians, we will be finding out about the Mayan civilisation and the historical significance of some of the Mexican festivals. As Musicians, we will be listening to traditional Mayan music, trying to identify the instruments used and attempting to create our own graphic score. In Religious Education we will be identifying links between the Christian and Jewish religions. Homework Project For this half term’s homework project , you can either: Find out about Mexico —which part would you like to visit and why? Find out about the Maya hieroglyphics and symbols. Design and build your own model Maya temple. Please bring your projects into school to share by Tuesday 22nd November.
