Matthew James producer and assistant director
As co-founder of Taylorian Productions, I am honoured to
welcome you to the Gaiety Theatre for a true classic – Lionel
Bart's musical masterpiece, Oliver!
In this, its 50th anniversary on the London stage, the story needs
no introduction. It has thrilled audiences for half a century and
I’ve no doubt this production will do the same!
Following our highly acclaimed success of 'The King & I' 12
months ago, we are delighted to once again welcome back our
resident director Mr. John Cumberlidge, his patience, enthusiasm
and flair for the project is obvious throughout the whole of this
wonderful show.
This year’s exception has been working with 38 talented local
children and from the outset they have been treated as 'young
professionals' and have responded accordingly.
That the company is able to present its fourth summer show and
continues to bring much remembered theatrical entertainment
to the Manx public – the wish of the much-missed Patrick Taylor
– is something which everyone associated with Taylorian is
extremely proud of.
I would like to personally thank the director, cast, crew and members of the production company for their
constant support all their hard work and commitment.
Finally, on behalf of Taylorian Productions, I thank YOU, the audience, for your continued support for
what promises to be an uplifting theatrical experience.
Matthew James
Mr Patrick Taylor – our founder
'If only Mr T had seen that'. 'Wouldn't Patrick have loved it.'
Just two of the comments heard during rehearsals over the past
few months.
More than two years after the passing of our co-founder, the
respect and regard in which Patrick Taylor is held remains
unwavering.
‘Mr T’, as he was affectionately known, derived so much pleasure
from his involvement in theatre, that it was infectious.
And that is certainly noticeable for many on and off-stage in this
production who were touched by his support and loyal
friendship.
No doubt during this run, 'Mr T’ will be looking down with an
encouraging word, particularly for younger members of the cast
who he loved to see thrive and progress.
Oliver! puts the sense of occasion back into going to the theatre
something Patrick Denton Taylor would fully endorse along with
the company which bears his name.

A TAYLORIAN PRODUCTION
John Cumberlidge direction and choreography
Oliver!, the greatest of all British musicals, brings John
back to the magnificent Gaiety Theatre for the summer of
2010 with the exceptional Taylorian Productions.
John’s career began in Theatre, Television and Cabaret – in
London and the Provinces, USA and Germany. West End
credits are Underneath the Arches at the Prince of Wales
Theatre, La Cage Aux Folles at the London Palladium and
The Wizard of Oz for the RSC at the Barbican and Stratford.
On Television Love Story, Parkinson, Halls of Fame with Roy
Hudd, A Night of 100 Stars, Royal Variety Shows, many
award ceremonies and cabaret in the Talk of London revues.
Provincial credits include My Fair Lady, Abracadaver with
Frank Langella, The Boy Friend and many others.
As a Director and Choreographer, John has received critical
acclaim for his productions of Follies, Oliver!, Kiss Me Kate,
Director’s notes
“Where is Love?” is probably the most profound line in
Oliver! the musical and a constant narrative in its epic
story and also a parallel that mirrors the life of England’s
greatest writer-Charles Dickens.
Lionel Bart’s magical adaptation of the Dickens classic has
become a theatrical phenomenon since it opened in
London’s West End during a heat wave on June 30th 1960
thus making this its 50th Anniversary year. It has given joy
and fulfilment to audiences and performers alike the world
over and the months leading up to this huge production, in
the beautiful Gaiety Theatre, has been no exception.
From the original casting of 27 wonderful young men as
characters in Fagin’s gang and workhouse, who give the
production such an energy and vibrancy that only youth
can give, to the creation of characters that are sometimes
desperate, dark and macabre, and the understanding of the
cast of all ages about bringing to life people who survived
in a society that, in early Victorian times, was rotten to the
core whilst existing with a disproportional Judicial system
where petty criminals were given sentences that would
rival that of mass murderers. Child exploitation and abuse
was conveniently over looked and life expectancy for the
poor in London around the mid 1850s was only 30 years of
age.
Once again, the dedication, talent and humility of the
amazing cast, production team and crew of Taylorian
Kismet, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Scrooge-The
Musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, Back to the 80s, Sweeny
Todd, Mack & Mabel, My Fair Lady, The King & I, La Cage
Aux Folles, We Will Rock You, Barnum, Hello Dolly, Jekyll &
Hyde – The Musical and Me & My Girl – for which he
received the Best Director Award at the First International
Festival of Musical Theatre.
He achieved great personal success and satisfaction
tutoring the NODA musical performers’ courses at Warwick
and Loughborough Universities, where he studied Jesus
Christ Superstar, Evita, West Side Story, Sunset Boulevard
and Sweeney Todd.
John also specialises in period hair design and make-up. He
has his own small company which styles and co-ordinates
video and television productions.
Productions has made this an extraordinary experience for
me. Having been fortunate enough to work on several
Charles Dickens adapted musicals, it is always the stunning
characters, incredible depth and integrity of the story that
somehow grasps the cast and pulls them into the
experience, then along with months of drilling and the
sheer slog of a long rehearsal period we get the end result.
This is only achieved because of the passion of the A-Team
(the brilliant assistants) – Matthew James, Assistant
Director – Julia Bratty & Kayleigh Parkinson, Dance Captains
and Liaison.
The huge sadness in all of this is that the Founder of
Taylorian Productions, Patrick Taylor, isn’t here to share and
witness the joy that the company he created, and is
continued by Matthew James and James Davis, has given to
all involved. How he would have loved to see the
youngsters in this production using their talent and time to
such a positive end and what we hope will be a life
changing experience – “Thank you Patrick!”
It was always said that Charles Dickens was a frustrated
actor and a great theatregoer and welcomed the
dramatisation of his stories. He took to the stage to give
recitals of his books, living out the life and deaths of his
characters with a huge passion and gusto. Audiences
flocked to hear England’s best loved storyteller and, with 11
film and television adaptations and translations into 22
languages of Oliver alone, it appears that they still do!

Lionel Bart writer and composer
Lionel Bart (1 August 1930 – 3 April 1999) was a writer and
composer of British pop music and musicals, best known for
creating the book, music and lyrics for Oliver!
Oliver! (1960), based on Dickens’s Oliver Twist was a huge hit
from the beginning, became the first British musical to transfer
successfully to Broadway. It has sustained its popularity to the
present day, and for many years was the standard musical
performed by UK schools. The original stage production, which
starred Ron Moody and Georgia Brown, contained such song hits
as “As Long As He Needs Me” and “Consider Yourself” and is also
notable for featuring Australian satirist Barry Humphries in his
first major stage role as Mr Sowerberry and future rock stars
Steve Marriott (later the lead singer of The Small Faces and
Humble Pie) and Phil Collins (of Genesis fame) as The Artful
Dodger.
In 1968 Oliver! was made into a film starring Ron Moody, Oliver
Reed and Shani Wallis which won several Oscars, including best
film. It is estimated that around this time Bart was earning 16
pounds a minute from Oliver!
Bart’s next two musicals, Blitz! (1962) (the song Far Away
produced another hit for Shirley Bassey) and Maggie May (1964),
had respectable West End runs (Blitz!, at the time London’s most
expensive musical ever, had a run of 568 performances; but
Twang! (1965), a musical based on the Robin Hood legend, was a
notorious flop and La Strada (1969), which opened on Broadway
in New York City, closed after only one performance. By this time
Bart was drinking heavily, and this evidently affected both his
work and his business judgement—he rashly used his personal
finances to try to rescue his last two productions, selling his past
and future rights to his work—including Oliver! — in order to
realise capital to finance the shows; Bart himself later estimated
that this action lost him over UK£1 million. By 1972, Bart was
bankrupt with debts of £73,000. He turned to drink, and a
twenty-year period of depression and alcoholism ensued. He
eventually stopped drinking and attended Alcoholics Anonymous,
although the years of substance abuse seriously damaged his
health, leaving him with diabetes and impaired liver function.
Cameron Mackintosh, who owned half the rights to Oliver!,
revived the musical at the London Palladium in 1994 in a version
rewritten by Lionel Bart. Mackintosh gave Lionel a share of the
production royalties.
Oliver! has played in 22 different languages: Basque, Bulgarian,
Czech, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Faroese, Finnish, French, Frisian,
German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Japanese,
Norwegian, Polish, Slovakian, Spanish & Swedish.
Artists who have appeared as Fagin include: Russ Abbott, Jim
Dale, Roy Hudd, Barry Humphries, Robert Lindsay, Ron Moody,
Jonathan Pryce, Rowan Atkinson, Omid Djalili & Griff Rhys Jones.
The name Artful Dodger is variously translated. In Hungarian it is
Pitkakynsi meaning light-fingered. In Swedish it is Raven meaning
the sly and cunning fox. In Hebrew it is Ha’Chamkan which
translates as Slippery Roger.
In Food Glorious Food the boys dream of cold jelly and custard
but in foreign translations of productions, some of the local
delicacies boys dream of a fresh fish (Finland), goulash soup and
chestnut puree (Hungary), huge cakes and pork chops (Poland),
meat pudding (Sweden), porkham (Japan).
