Coal-mining in Pembrokeshire
The Pembrokeshire coal field stretches across the centre of the county from
Saundersfoot in the east to St Brides Bay in the west. It produced anthracite
coal of the very finest quality having a very high carbon content and thus burnt
very brightly yet giving off little smoke. Unfortunately the coal seams were
mostly thin, plagued by fault lines and with the best coal only found at
considerable depth.
Coal mining in Pembrokeshire was already underway by the early 14th century
and would continue until the closure of the last mine in 1950. As well as being
used locally, the coal was extensively exported by sea to other parts of Britain
and abroad.
In addition to coal, culm was also produced in large amounts. Culm was tiny,
dusty shattered fragments of coal and so had little financial value. It could,
however, be mixed with clay and straw and rolled into balls to provide fuel for
slow burning domestic fires. These culm fires were essential to keep the
damp from the many earthen-walled local dwellings in the wet Pembrokeshire
climate.
