In this edition of In Advance, we are delighted to be
interviewing Kevin Brooks of Cannon Travel.
How long have you been at Cannon

My wife Vivien started Cannon

involved around 2000.
BEAUTIFUL to make its
West End debut in February 2015
THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE OF A MUSIC ICON. Carole King, the charttopping music legend, was an ordinary girl with an extraordinary talent.
She fought her way into the record industry as a
teenager and sold her first hit, Will You Love Me
Tomorrow, when she was just seventeen. By the
time she was twenty she was writing number
ones for the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll, including
the Drifters, the Shirelles, Aretha Franklin and the
Monkees. But her greatest challenge was to find her
own voice and finally step into the spotlight.
BEAUTIFUL is the untold story of her journey
from school girl to superstar; from her relationship
with husband and song-writing partner Gerry
Goffin, their close friendship and playful rivalry with
fellow song-writing duo Barry Mann and Cynthia
Weil, to her remarkable rise to stardom.
Along the way, she became one of the most
successful solo acts in popular
music history, and wrote the
soundtrack to a generation,
with countless classics such
as You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman, Take
Good Care of my Baby, You’ve Got a Friend, So Far
Away, It Might As Well Rain Until September, Up on
the Roof, and Locomotion.

Cannon
Travel
specialises
in
groups,
tourism
and even luxury
holidays; to what
do you attribute
its success as a
specialist
travel
agency?
Knowledge
and
experience. Our least
experienced member of staff
has 20 years in the industry so
between our 10 sales staff there isn’t
much they don’t know. We are also passionate
about ‘getting in right’. Of course things go
wrong and it upsets me greatly when it does but
we always ask ourselves what should we have
done differently and learn from the experience.
Lastly, no discounts. We offer a first class service
and to discount would be to cheapen the
product... so we don’t.
What do you think 2015 has in store for you,
the travel industry and the entertainment
business?
There is a definite trend of people coming
away from the internet and preferring to talk
to someone who can genuinely advise them. If
you are spending hard earned cash you want to
know you are spending it well, so good advice
counts.
We have seen a marked increase in business
over the past 12/18 months and I expect that to
continue. In fact, I’m writing this sitting by a pool
in Sicily discussing how best to expand our
business.
What do you enjoy about
working with Encore
Tickets, and why?
I’m a great believer in
building relationships
with
specialist
suppliers. We only
ever use one coach
company and we
only ever use one
ticket supplier and
that is Encore.
We’ve been with them
since they started in 2000
and see no reason to change.
They know their business, have
helpful staff and provide a great service.
I also know that if I have a problem I can pick up
the phone and they will help.
What is your favourite London show?
That is a very difficult question because I like
all aspects of the theatre and I just love live
performances. I’m going to choose two shows....
Jersey Boys because I can clearly remember
hearing the Four Seasons when they first hit
the charts and it’s astonishing how much of the
music I recognise. My other favourite show is
Slava’s Snow Show...it just leaves you with a
warm feeling.
If you could play a character in a show, who
would you be?
If I had my time again I would love to be in the
theatre but I have no desire to be on stage... I’m
very much a ‘behind the scenes’ type of person
so I would chose to be a producer. That would
definitely be my dream job.

Encore talks to MEMPHIS’s Killian Donnelly
Encore Tickets interviewed Killian Donnelly who plays DJ Huey Calhoun
in the smash-hit musical Memphis. We found out how he feels about his
role in the show, what it’s like working with Beverley Knight and why
groups should come and see this multi-award-winning musical.
Encore Tickets (E): You’re fresh
from your role starring in The
Commitments, would you say such a
high-energy role prepared you well
for the electrifying Memphis?
Killian Donnelly (KD): Absolutely!
The Commitments was a very
energetic show and my character
Deco, was constantly singing and
running around. Huey is exactly that
and then some. I’m actually on stage
more than I was in The Commitments.
The writers tell me I’m off stage for
6 minutes in total. However it never
feels like it, as the show is so fast
paced and quick, it zips along.
E: You play Huey Calhoun in
Memphis, what kind of a man is he?
KD: Huey is a charming idiot (as my
Mam would call him). He’s loveable
and caring but he’s not the bounciest
ball on the beach. He lives for this rock
‘n’ roll music that he discovers and
wants the world to hear it. He falls
in love with Felicia (Beverley Knight)
and her voice. All he wants to do is
share her gift with the world. He is a
loveable charmer with a big heart.
E: What did you have in mind when
you were building his character?
KD: It’s really his story. The audience
follows his journey from getting this
rock ‘n’ roll music played in the centre
of the radio dial. Being a white man
who falls in love with a black singer,
it’s not going to be the smoothest of
journeys.
E: You’re performing alongside some
extremely talented actors in this
production. What’s it like working
with Beverley Knight?
KD: It’s an absolute gift to share the
stage with her and to call her my
leading lady. She’s incredibly caring to
me and everyone in the building. It’s
quite inspiring to watch Beverley on
stage and I have loved seeing how she
has approached her character, relating
to her and making Felicia her own. She
also gives us all sweets so we love her!
E: For groups who are not familiar
with the show, what would you say
is most appealing about Memphis?
KD: Exactly that. I have loved the
reaction on twitter and at stage door
where people have not seen nor
heard any of the music for this show
and how much it has affected them.
It’s such a funny touching story with
award winning creators. This show
has been 11 years in the making. It
was on Broadway for over 2 years and
won the Tony Award for Best Musical.
The journey to the West End has been
long and it’s so lovely hearing how all
the creators were dying for a London
audience to see it. I learned about the
show throughout my audition process
and was blown away by the music. I
think people are going to be blown
away by the show and so far we’ve
had standing ovations each night.
E: Finally, why should audiences
come to see Memphis?
KD: A night out at the theatre should
have a strong story, with great music
and engaging characters and Memphis
has just that. It’s got lots of laughs
and proper belly laughs they are
too. Beverley Knight’s voice live is
something everyone should witness,
as well as seeing what a beautiful
actress she is and, last but not least,
the dancing in the show is outstanding.
It’s from the same man who brought
us Jersey Boys, so it is slick, cool
and jumps off the stage. We’ve had
standing ovations every night so that’s
always a good sign of a good show…
….I’m in it too acting like an idiot so
that’s worth a look too.
Killian Donnelly stars alongside
the Queen of British Soul
Beverley Knight (The Bodyguard)
in Memphis, the multi-awardwinning musical that’s been
a smash hit on Broadway and
on a triumphant 55-city North
American tour.
With original songs by Grammy
winner and Bon Jovi co-founder
David Bryan, and a gripping truelife-inspired story by writer Joe
DiPietro, Memphis will leave you
exhilarated by its explosive blend
of electrifying music, soaring
emotion and roof-raising energy.

THE COMMITMENTS, London’s five-star smash-hit musical
is now in its second ‘sublime’ (Daily Telegraph) year!
After a sensational World Premiere at
the Palace Theatre in London’s West
End, this multi-million pound production
continues to play to packed houses,
garnering rave reviews and proving to be
Theatre land’s hottest ticket!
The show has been adapted from the
novel by Booker prize winning author
Roddy Doyle himself and is directed by
award-winning Jamie Lloyd (Macbeth
starring James McAvoy, Urinetown and
Richard III starring Martin Freeman)
THE COMMITMENTS is the story of
Jimmy Rabbitte, a young working class
music fan, who shapes an unlikely bunch
of amateur musicians and friends into
an amazing live act, the finest soul band
Dublin has ever produced. The show
follows the journey of two members
of a frustrated synthesizer band who
turn to Jimmy, the local music expert,
for help. Placing a classified advert
in a music paper, Jimmy auditions a
number of wannabes before finalising
the new line up who he names THE
COMMITMENTS.

“Utterly enjoyable, vibrant and captivating. Matilda works its magic for
adults and children alike. Great performances and comedy moments,
especially from Mrs Trunchbull.” – Sergio Cicalo, Trade Sales Manager
Christopher, fifteen years old, stands beside Mrs
Shears’ dead dog. It has been speared with a
garden fork, it is seven minutes after midnight and
Christopher is under suspicion. He records each
fact in the book he is writing to solve the mystery of
who murdered Wellington. He has an extraordinary
brain, exceptional at maths while ill-equipped to
interpret everyday life. He has never ventured
alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being
touched and he distrusts strangers. But his detective
work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a
frightening journey that upturns his world.
THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN
THE NIGHT-TIME is now also thrilling audiences
at New York’s Barrymore Theatre on Broadway,
receiving rave reviews across the board. Now

KOOZA tells the story of The Innocent,
a melancholy loner in search of his place

humour!

Our view
War Horse, based on the beloved novel by Michael Morpurgo, is a
powerfully moving and imaginative drama, filled with stirring music
and magnificent artistry.
“Alfred Hitcocks 39 Steps is a must see production, the suspense and precision
acting will leave you speechless. This show is one of the West Ends longest running
shows for a reason and is guaranteed to have you talking about it for days after.”
– Daniella Mullins, Trade and UK Groups Manager
At the outbreak of World War One, Joey, young
Albert’s beloved horse, is sold to the cavalry and
shipped to France. He’s soon caught up in enemy
fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary odyssey,
serving on both sides before finding himself alone in
no man’s land. Albert cannot forget Joey and, still not
old enough to enlist, he embarks on a treacherous
mission to find him and bring him home.
Experience the emotional journey that charges
through the battlefields of history straight to the
hearts of audiences around the world.

Our view
“This is one of the best plays in the West End. The puppets are
magical. During the show, you feel like there are real horses on
the stage. I’m not ashamed to say I cried every time. This is a

A Cathedral dedicated to
St Paul has overlooked
the City of London since
604AD,
a constant
reminder to this great
commercial centre of
the importance of the
spiritual side of life.
The current Cathedral –
the fourth to occupy this
site – was designed by
the court architect Sir
Christopher Wren and
built between 1675 and
1710 after its predecessor
was destroyed in the
Great Fire of London. Its
architectural and artistic
importance reflect the
determination of the five
monarchs who oversaw
its building that London’s
leading church should be
as beautiful and imposing
as their private palaces.
