Outside of churches and florists and bonnet merchants, we don’t hear the word “Easter” so much any more. Schools no longer use the holiday as a way of deciding when to let their students have a week off. It is mid-year break or spring break…..Egg hunts are not longer Easter Egg hunts but rather ‘spring celebrations.” Like it or not, Easter is disappearing from our cultural vocabulary. Yes there are still baskets and bonnets, there are chocolate eggs and pastel colored peeps… But in these changing times the word Easter is disappearing from our cultural vocabulary. And that is sad for those of us who know the power and the joy of Easter, for those of us who are so awed by the life and death and life again of Christ. We long for a time and for a world which can experience the wonder and the mystery that is ours. We shake our heads and cluck our teeth and shake our heads… But maybe we need to do more than that. Maybe we are being called back to the garden when the women found the empty tomb and were so overcome, so filled with joy and fear that they shared the incredible, unbelievable news that Christ was risen, that life is everlasting, and that God will never leave us. Maybe we are the ones to say the word, to shout the word, to sing the word with joy and boldness and certainty. Maybe we are the ones to Continued on Page 2 T H E P OW E R O F L OV E & P R AY E R I S AT P I L G R I M R E F LE C TI ONS (continued from Page 1) give meaning to the baskets and bonnets, the eggs and the flowers. Maybe we are the ones who by the lives we lead and the joys we experience can make Easter if not a word in the vocabulary of our culture, a word and a hope in the heart of the people. Because “Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed!” C ONGR E GATI ONA L M E E TI NG: S UNDAY, A PRIL 9 To approve a grant proposal for a sabbatical for Dr. Bingham Informational Meeting: Sunday, April 2 Each year the Lily Foundation gives “clergy renewal grants” to offer ministers the chance to refresh and renew their ministries. The grants cover not only the expense of the sabbatical, but include funds for the church to provide ministry while the clergy person is gone. And the Foundation wants to be sure that the congregation is supportive of their minister’s plan. Pending approval at the Congregational meeting I will be submitting a grant proposal to the foundation. The title will be “Finding our Future: Rediscovering the Sacred through Mystery and Imagination.” I will be exploring the ways in which we experience the sacred, particularly through the arts, through nature, and through prayer and meditation. My purpose is to prepare both me and the church for our own futures, as I anticipate retirement and the church envisions its gifts and its ministry. On Sunday, April 2 I will share the details of my proposal in anticipation of the congregational meeting. We will gather at 11:30 in the conference room and I will answer any questions you might have. Then on Sunday, April 9 immediately after worship (before the Palm Sunday brunch) the congregation will be asked to endorse the proposal by a congregational vote. I am excited about the possibilities not only for me, but for all of us and hope that you will be able to join us both of those days! Thank you! Dr. Bingham NOTE F R OM T H E TR US TE E S We are having another Volunteer Clean - up day at the church, Saturday April 8th from 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Her creativity includes edible arrangements of fruits and also vegetables. She brought a wonderful vegetable arrangement to share. She's been making these for 35 years. We also highlighted the great cookies she makes to raise money to help women in Kenya to buy chickens to help support their families. She's also very involved with helping the homeless. She worked very hard on the Laundry Love project. Sharla works as a crossing guard – getting our local students to and from school safely. She's been doing this for 11 years. Fried Egg Cookies Laundry Love Sharla is also the Remembrance Chair for Women's Auxiliary. She sends cards to many Pilgrims on behalf of the Auxiliary. Page 9 T H E P OW E R O F L OV E & P R AY E R I S AT P I L G R I M F ACILITY USE When coming to the church, please remember to check in AND out with the office staff. This is extremely important in case of an emergency because if no one knows you are here, no one can look for you. It is also important so that you can know whether or not rooms are being rented by others. Renting our facility to others brings us much needed income. We want our guests to continue to come back to our facility, so we need to be respectful of their space. Also, if you are planning to meet at the church, please let BaLinda know so she can make sure the space you want is available. Following these procedures would be very much appreciated. In the month of March we will be contacting all ministries asking for a list of everyone who has keys to the church. We must keep and maintain an updated list for our insurance purposes. When we reach out, please reply right away.
