I NEED A FRIEND
Today the children will hear about a woman who hadn’t done the right things, but Jesus still loved her.
In this activity, we are going to think of ways to love and help our friends.
Supplies:
1. Various items that would help someone feel better. Examples: bear (or other stuffed animal),
band-aids, blanket, boo-boo buddy, book, toy dishes, or night light.
How-To:
1. Have the children sit around you in a circle.
2. Explain to them that you have several things that could help someone feel better.
3. Give them scenarios and have them think about what they would do to make you feel better.
Say This:
Before the Activity:
“Look at all these things we can use to help our friends and show them love when they are sad or
hurt. I am going to tell you about a time when I have been sad or hurt and I want you to find
something that will help me.”
During the Activity:
“Let’s pretend there is a storm with lots of rain and thunder! What would help me friends?” (Let
the children bring you the teddy bear, or night light, etc, etc.) What if I fell off my bike and my knee is
hurting. What would help me? (Help them to think of the band-aid or boo-boo buddy.) Wow, that
would make me feel better! It’s almost bed time, but I want to read a story before I go to sleep.
What can you find that would help me? (Help them to think of reading a book.) Yes! A book!”
After the Activity:
“Today we are going to hear about a woman who was sad and Jesus helped her!”

Jesus walked a long way and then he was very (thirsty).
He met a woman at the well. Jesus knew she had done some things that were (bad).
Jesus was kind to the (woman)!
Jesus loved the woman at the well. Jesus loves (everyone).
Practice the Verse:
“Are you ready to practice our verse with me? (Let children respond.) Okay, let’s say it all together.
‘Love (hug yourself) each other (point to those around you) as I (point up to God) have loved you (hug
yourself),’ John 15:12.” (Hold out hands like a book.)
(Practice the Bible verse several times with the children. Give them a sticker for participating.)
Make a List:
“Jesus was kind and loving to the woman at the well today. She had done some bad things but Jesus
still loved her. [Big Idea] Jesus loves everyone. What are some ways that you can be kind and show
love to your friends or family? Maybe you could help your sister do her chores or share a toy with
your friend. Let’s make a list of all the ways we can be kind and loving and write them in our journal.”
(Write down the children’s names and what they say in your journal. Remember to print the words so they
can recognize their names and letters. Mention their list when you pray together.)
Pray:
“Dear Jesus, thank you for loving us. Help us to show others this week that we love them by (read
the items on your list). We want to love others the way you love them. Amen.”
