Response to Intervention 2014-2015
Response to Intervention (RTI) is a method of academic intervention used to provide early, systematic assistance to
students who are having difficulty learning. RTI seeks to prevent academic failure through early intervention, frequent
progress measurement, and increasingly intensive research-based instructional interventions for children who continue to
have difficulty.
Edna Karr High School will provide RTI services to your child at the discretion of his/her teachers, counselors, and
interventionists. All students qualifying for services will be automatically placed in an intervention program unless services
are refused by the parent or guardian.
By signing this document, you certify that you are aware of RTI services available to your child. Please mark only one box
below. If you do not check one of the boxes below, or do not return the form, Edna Karr will consider the lack of response
as consent for box A.
 A. I consent to have Edna Karr High School providing RTI services as needed to my child.
 B. I do NOT consent to have Edna Karr High School providing RTI services as needed to my child.

Revised Attendance Law 2014-2015
This notice is in reference to the newly revised state attendance law. The new law states that high school students must be present
30,060 minutes per semester, which equals to a limit of 5 days unexcused or unverified absences allowed per semester.
Only extenuating circumstances will allow a student to miss school and still be marked present. The five extenuating circumstances
include:
1. Extended leave of absence due to physical or emotional illness;
2. Hospital stay;
3. Recuperation from an accident;
4. A contagious disease in the family;
5. Observance of special and recognized holidays of the student’s own faith;
6. Visitation with a parent who is a member of the US Armed forces or National Guard;
7. Travel for educational purposes, with the approval of the principal (Verification must be submitted.);
8. Death in the immediate family with documentation (these absences should not exceed 3 days);
Missing three or more days of school for any of the first four reasons would require verification from a physician, dentist, or nurse
practitioner licensed by the state, and will be verified by the school nurse and social worker. This means no longer will a student be
excused for vacations, and they will no longer be excused by a parent note without verification from the Social Worker. The only
exceptions would be death in the family (not to exceed one week), natural catastrophe and/or disaster, or prior school system-approved
travel for education.
It is also noted that excused absences are defined as “absences of two or fewer consecutive school days incurred due to personal illness
or serious illness in the family”. Unexcused absences are those “not meeting the requirements set forth in the excused absence and
extenuating circumstances definitions, included, but not limited to, out-of-school suspensions and absences due to any job, unless it is
part of an approved instructional program”. Students who participate in school-sponsored activities will not be considered absent (i.e.
sports, club activities, field trips, band dismissals, etc.).
If a student accumulates more unexcused absences than the attendance law allows, he or she WILL NOT receive credit for the course, or
if the student is considered a senior, her or she WILL NOT be allowed to graduate. If you are checking your child out for an excusable
reason noted above, you are responsible for providing the physician’s excuse to the social worker immediately upon return of the
student.
Interventions that can result due to excessive absences are: attendance monitoring, referral to Families in Need of Services, retention
(non-promotion) to next grade, and/or referral to Municipal Court for Truancy.
By signing this document, you certify that you are aware of the state attendance law and will abide by all rules and
consequences.

Pranks vs. Vandalism
Prank: a practical joke or mischievous act.
Vandalism and malicious mischief: willful injury, harm or destruction to persons or property.
Senior pranks
At the end of a high school career, many students attempt to make a final memory through a prank. In
many schools, these pranks are clever, harmless, and take little time or effort to recover from.
Unfortunately, at Edna Karr High School there has been a tradition of destructive “pranks”, which in
reality are malicious to people and property, and vandalize school property.
Destroying/damaging school property
• A student who chooses to intentionally cause or attempt to cause damage to property of the school
or of persons at school, while on school grounds, at a school activity, function or event, will be
financially responsible for the current cost of repair or replacement.
• A student will be held liable if the pranks or vandalism result in any injured people or excessive
damages, and may result in law enforcement involvement.
• A student who chooses this disrespectful, destructive behavior will be required to participate in
administrative interventions. These interventions will include parental contact and police referral.
• Seniors who participate in “pranks” that are destructive to school property, harmful or offensive to
others, or significantly disruptive to instruction may not be allowed to participate in senior activities,
including graduation. Graduating seniors participating in vandalism or malicious mischief may not
receive diplomas or transcripts until restitution has been made.
I understand the potential consequences of participating in malicious end of the year “pranks” and vandalism. I agree not
to participate in such activities, and to leave a positive mark at my alma mater, Edna Karr High School.
