Finally all the tour participants gather at the International airport of Caracas and are ready to start our adventure. And the first bird of the trip is not a Venezuelan one – a House Sparrow around the landing grounds! There has been report of this species since some 8 years ago but it’s not sure how they have got down here. We depart to Maracay city, around 3 hours from the airport, to Posada El Limon for a light supper and a recovering night sleep. Next day we drive to the heart of the Llanos to Hato Pinero which due to its orography allows the formation of various habitats and makes it the only reserve in the Venezuelan Llanos where all the natural habitats are represented, from dry forest to savannas with native grasses, immense wetlands, rivers and gallery forest, the home of some 300 species of birds and is in this beautiful reserve where we are going to spend the following three and a half days! Every day we departed on the open truck that we use on the ranch for the excursions going through the several different environments. In the savannas we saw lots of Buff-necked Ibises, Whistling Herons, Sharp-tailed Ibis, occasionally Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture, flocks of different species of seedeaters and finch, Grey, Lined, Ruddy-breasted Seedeaters and Saffron Finches, Double-striped Thick-knee, Savanna Hawk and lots of Whitetailed Deer and Savanna Fox. Flying over head the beautifully Scarlet and Chestnut-fronted Macaws, Yellowheaded Parrot and 3 days on the row we had the magnificent King Vulture, and every day we had the beautiful Venezuelan Troupial! On the several ponds along the road we saw Rufescent Tiger-Heron, Green Ibis, Sunbitern, Roseate Spoonbill, Striated Heron, Black-capped Donacobius, Limpkin, Black-crowned Night-Heron, Black-collared Hawk, Cocoi Heron and lots of Spectacle Caiman. In the trees surrounding the ponds we had a small mixed species flock of Hooded Tanager, Chestnut-vented Conebill, Yellow Warbler, Spot-breasted Woodpecker among others. Here with the aid of a tape we call the Llanos endemic specie, White-bearded Flycatcher, and a pair came right a way! Also we call the regional endemic Orinocan Saltator and 3 showed up really nicely! © Naturetrek July 07 1 Venezuela - Llanos Tour Report Along the road and at several spots big groups of the endangered species Yellow-knobbed Curassow, protected in this reserve, and among them the common Rufous-vented Chachalaca. The boat ride offers another perspective of the landscape, surrounded by gallery forest where hundreds of Hoatzins live making it alarm call as approaching them. Lots of Lesser Kiskadees making its squeaky call, Sunbittern, Grey-necked Wood-Rail walking along the bank, different species of Kingfishers, Ring, Amazon, Green and the also the elusive Green rufous as it rarely sits out in the open. At this time of the year, which is the end of the rainy season, there are lots of butterflies and especially on the boat ride it’s a spectacle, there are myriads of them. Another environment which offers other species of bird is the forest trail. Along the road that leads to it we saw Pale-tipped Inezia, Ochre-lored Flatbill, Buff-breasted Wren, Blue-tailed Emerald, a female Ruby-topaz Hummingbird, Glittering-throated Emerald. In the trail already we heard a Slate-headed Tody-Flycatcher and with the aid of a tape we call it in, but it was a bit reluctant to come, in the end most of us saw it. Further ahead is the home for a pair of White-bellied Antbirds which we all manage to see after a while. We also had good views of Lance-tailed Manakin as they have several leks in this area. Every night we did spot lighting on the way back to the house. It is always very exciting as one never knows what can show up beside the usual Pauraques and the White-tailed Nightjars. The first night we had Greathorned Owl after which it started to rain and had to go straight to the house. On the second night we had 8 Great Potoos! and a surprise in the bushes which at first we thought it was an Ocelot, but not, for my own surprise it was a juvenile Jaguar!! My first one, by the way! Near the house, on the air strip there was lots of Lesser Nighthawk. The third night we had two Ocelots! Around the house we had another Great-horned Owl and a Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl too. One of the wonders of the Llanos at this time of the year is the ¨Garceros¨, which are groups of trees near water where Ibis, egrets and herons go to roost every evening, so the last afternoon we went to see it, arriving at the spot near dusk and waited until hundred of Bare-face Ibis, Cattle Egret, Little-blue Heron in less number and the last to arrive the Scarlet Ibis and among them some White Ibis, covering the trees entirely. What a site! The last morning, as we had a couple of hours, we went to check some spots to see if we could see some new birds and specifically the Horned Screamer which had escaped from us in the few last days, and we succeeded, two Horned Screamer! Now satisfied with our quest we were ready to depart to the next spot, Henri Pittier National Park in the coastal mountain range! We arrive for lunch back again to Posada El Limon in Maracay. It started to rain so we had to wait until 4:30 to depart to Ocumare road, one of the two that crosses the National Park and the one that leads to Rancho Grande Biological Station. It was a slow afternoon, not many birds, but at the end it was rewarding as we saw a pair of Sharp-tailed Streamcreeper, a rare, sluggish, local resident. We spent the next 3 days birding at different elevations, enjoying the various habitats that this beautiful park offers. From sea level up to 1.600 m (the highest point of the road) one goes through xerophitic forest, deciduous forest, semi-deciduous forest, evergreen forest and cloud forest. 2 © Naturetrek July 07 Venezuela - Llanos Tour Report At the coast area in Puerto Colombia, we had Magnificent Frigatebird, Brown Booby, Brown Pelican, Neotropic Cormorant, Common Black-Hawk, Royal Tern. In the xerophitic area around the cemetery, one of the places we look for the regional endemic Buffy Hummingbird, we instead had Northern Whit-fringed Antwren, Rufous tailed Jacamar, Pale-eyed Pygmy-Tyrant, Barred Antshrike, but the Buffy Hummingbird, not this time! In the semi-deciduous forest we look for the Chusquea bamboo specialist, the Long-tailed Antbird, and succeeded to see it with the aid of tapes as well as another sckulker, the Stripe-breasted Spinetail. While in the spot working on this bird, a beautiful Stripe-headed Brush-Finch showed up! Further and higher in the cloud forest, we saw the endemic Handsome Fruiteater, Pale-edge Flycatcher in the highest elevation and the endemic and beautiful Rufous-cheeked Tanager in a mixed species flock. Cloud forest always has lots of tanager this time we had, Golden, Bay-headed, Beryl-spangle, Speckled, Whitewinged, Blue-grey, Palm, Rufous-cheeked, Blue-capped and Blue-necked. Also, in this same type of habitat, Long-tailed Sylph, Booted Racket-tail, the endemics White-tipped Quetzal, Blood-eared Parakeet and Groovebilled Toucanet. At lower elevation Silver-beaked, Fulvous-headed, Guira and Highland Hepatic Tanagers. The second morning we did the trail behind the biological station which its at 1.000m elevation, looking for understorey birds. We had a small flock of Slaty Antwren and Plain Antvireo, and near by the Whiskered Wren. Further ahead we had a Scale-crested Pygmy-tyrant. We called the Guttulated Foliage-gleaner and the Greythroated Leaftosser but there was no answer. We heard the Plain-backed Antpitta but it did not show up. We saw three Moustached Puffbirds at different elevations, amazing because it is an easily overlooked resident. At a mid-elevation spot we had Marble-faced Bristle-tyrant and the endemic Venezuelan Bristle-tyrant in a mixed species flock, the last one is easily overlooked as it is very similar to Marble-faced. Among them, the two type of foliage-gleaner, Montane and Buff-fronted, Streaked Xenop, and Crested Spinetail amongst others. One of the birds we look for in the rivers nearly at sea level is the Fasciated Tigger-Heron. This time we saw three! Near this area we look for the Rufous-winged Antwren which is pretty difficult to see as it tends to stay up in tangle vines, but after a while we managed to have decent views of it. The last morning we spent mainly at the Biological Station. But before arriving we made a short stop to check again on Sharp-tailed Streamcreeper, and saw it again! At this same stop we had the chance to study a Brownthroated Three-toe Sloth. At the station we enjoyed the birds at the feeding table which is at the terrace and had close views and excellent chances for photographing the tanagers, hummers and others, like Violet-fronted Brilliant, Golden Tanager, Bay-headed Tanager, Speckled Tanager, Green Honeycreeper, Orange-bellied Euphonia. Also around the station we had Russet-backed Oropendolas and a flock of the endemic Blood-eared Parakeet. It was a good way to bid farewell the trip! © Naturetrek July 07 3 Venezuela - Llanos Tour Report Species lists Total trip species (seen and heard): 296 Relative abundance: + = 5 - 12 individuals ++ = 13 -
