House Singing 2016
We were treated to a spectacular House Singing competition just before
half-term. Mr Matthew Cook, Millfield’s Director of Music, adjudicated the event and
below is a synopsis of the chosen songs and performances. The playlist and photos can
be viewed via the icons.
Angles
Winning house. We Are Young: an
enthusiastic performance with excellent
use of extreme loud and soft dynamics
to create atmosphere. Wonderful solos
from many members of the house
including Maddie Calvesbert-Sharp and
Jasmine Caley. Confetti canons fired at
high point in the music and excellent
energetic direction from Mrs Blasdale.
Jadiel Wahab being ‘carried home’ was
a particular highlight!
Danes
An original medley of popular Avicii
songs clearly known and loved by the
children and staff who both performed
with great energy and passion. A
charismatic opening presentation was
created by Mr and Mrs James including
a freeze pose and then a DJ style mashup.
Boys in Year 7 have a fantastic opportunity open
to them in the form of our pupil exchange trip
to South Africa. Boys from South Africa will visit
us in February for approximately six weeks and
we are looking for host families to support
them. In July there is the opportunity for our
host boys to go to South Africa themselves to
stay with host families and enjoy what has
proved to be the most amazing experience for
some of our previous exchange boys. Please see
this letter for more details and register your
interest with [email protected] for more
information.
Mr French
Jutes
Can’t Stop The Feeling: great complex
harmonies and excellent choreography
won this house the ‘ensemble prize’.
Courageous house staff involvement on
stage from Mr Maxwell conducting his
own house.
Saxons
2016 Exchange trip
With a Scottish theme, Highland Fling
from Mr Henderson and Celtic folk
fiddle from Mrs Gorodi, who then leapt
into place to conduct the house in
singing the Proclaimer’s song 500 Miles.
Superb solo opening from Andrew
Penney and some lovely small
ensemble performances in the piece.
Good energy from the house as a whole
and an entertaining ‘out and about’
video.
Oliver Mallett, Boris Findlay, Archie
McDonough and Oliver Wood took part in the
2016 trip and welcomed James Calver and Travis
Hayward to Millfield in February last year. The
boys were a pleasure to host and took part in all
sorts of opportunities, playing in sports
matches, learning new languages, playing music
and much more. Over half term they explored
local areas of interest with their hosts and
became like another member of the family.
Everyone was sad to see them leave in March,
but the host boys knew they had it all to look
forward too as their leg of the exchange was
only a few months away. They travelled to
South Africa in July and were met at the airport
by their host families and were treated to the
most amazing three weeks taking part in school,
safari’s, visits to local villages, beaches and
much more.
Whole School
The performance by the whole school
was Pompeii with excellent soloists
from each house. Mrs Borenstein
Quotes from this years exchange students:
“Going to South Africa and taking part in the
exchange was the experience of my life and
given the chance I would do it all again.” Oliver
Wood
“I had the most amazing time in South Africa,
playing rugby in no boots, safari, surfing and the
South African braais!” Oliver Mallett

Spanish Music Video
Year 5 Visit to Burrow Mump
On Friday, the Year 8D/DD Spanish class (studying
with Mrs Luxon) recorded a song about weekends in
Spanish. Shortly after, a fantastic crew of volunteers joined
forces to create what can only be described as one of the
best music videos ever. Enjoy watching and feel free to sing
along:
Year 5 visited Burrowbridge this week as part of our topic on ‘Water for
Everyone’. We were looking at how flooding affects the Somerset levels; the
benefits it brings in terms of attracting wildlife and providing peat and willow
farming and also the problems people faced during the 2013 floods.
Los fines de semana, a las nueve de la mañana
Me voy a la montaña con mi tortuga pequeña Juana
Los fines de semana, a la una de la tarde
We all climbed Burrow Mump to view the levels before carrying out a river
survey and a Poohsticks experiment to calculate the flow rate of the river. We
looked at the measures taken to prevent future flooding and spoke to a local
resident about their experience of the floods. We found out that the army
helped out with sand bags and Prince Charles came to offer his support.
Mrs Seal, Miss Newman and Mrs Redstone
Con mi serpiente Cristina voy a la piscina
Los fines de semana, a las cinco de tarde
Veo la televisión con mi cobaya Ramón
Los fines de semana, escucho música en mi cama
A las once de la noche. Luego duermo, duermo, duermo.
Harvest
Appeal
Red Cross Europe Refugee Crisis Appeal
At the Harvest Service pupils were asked to try to sow a
sum of money, perhaps belonging to them or their parents,
(e.g. £10) and then using gifts and talents to try and grow a
larger sum of money from it.
We have been impressed with the efforts our pupils have
made and will be reporting back via the newsletter. See
what Grace, Ellis and Brychan have been doing below.
We would love to know of any activities that your
children have been involved in to raise money. Please
email [email protected] with a photo and
brief description.
Rev Allen, Chaplain
Over half-term
Grace Olding
completed the
Harvest Appeal
challenge. She did a
car wash along the
road by her house
and raised £35.00.
Well done Grace.
Ellis and Brychan James worked hard this half-term by
folding washing, cleaning rooms and helping both sets of
grandparents in the garden. They then decided to add all
the small change in their money boxes.

Singing Children of Africa

Saturday Breakfast Masterclass – Bands
Millfield Prep’s Senior Choir visited Millfield on Thursday 13 October
to create a colourful and vibrant collaboration of sound in a concert
with a Kenyan Choir.
The concert started with the Kenyan national anthem, followed by
the Millfield Camerata with a splendid performance ranging from
Billy Joel arrangements to James Macmillan and onto Paul Simon.
We then enjoyed a lively display from the Singing Children of Africa
from Mombasa who are touring to help raise funds for Educate the
Kids. This is a charity dedicated to giving underprivileged children in
Africa a better education by funding to build, furnish and staff an
orphanage.
“I really enjoyed watching their faces as they danced and sang
because they were really enthusiastic and were enjoying it.”
Caity Collins.
Katie White, Jasmine Caley, James Sclater, Freddie Turnell and
Amelie Burrows described the Kenyan Choir as being “toe-tapping,
inspirational, jubilant and confident with amazing colourful costumes.
It was incredible to see how much talent they have when they live in
mud huts and it is clear that they love what they do.”
Following the Kenyan Choir in Thursdays exciting programme was our
own Senior Choir with beautiful performances of Shoshone Love
Song, Ave Verum Corpus and Pompeii.
“This night was a smiling night from the point that we got on the bus
and all started singing our songs. When we got there they told us we
had to learn a song – it was so difficult at first but when we finished
it, it was really fun because we had to dance and clap. We met some
wonderful people that all danced, smiled and sang really well”
Eva Varela Herrera.
Christian Willsher said that it was “a night to remember and
how lucky we are in the world.” See more photos via the icon.
On Saturday 8 October Mr Kench and Mr Guy presented a
successful Bands Open Masterclass in the Recital Hall
incorporating many performances from pupils in the school.
These included a performance by Artem of Back in Black, also
Krijn Smits playing I wanna be like you, Amy Seal performed
I Love Rock n Roll and then a magnificent open rehearsal of the
School band which included Maddie Calvesbert-Sharp, Annabel
Jeanes, Amy Seal and Jadiel Wahab. Some members of the
audience described it as being “fun, good and interactive - the
rock band were amazing.”
Refugee Coat Appeal
If anybody has any spare coats that they parcel up, here is an

Junior Christmas Production
It is that time of year again when we ask for your support
with our Christmas Production. Children were given scripts
and song lyrics to learn over the October half term and we
ask that parents spend a few minutes each day to help
them practice. In addition we have also sent home a
costume list for some children. This is only for basic items
such as PJ’s or T-shirts, as more complicated costumes will
be provided. If you do have any problems sourcing
anything can you let myself or Mrs Robbins know.
We thank you for your support and we look forward to
seeing you on either
Monday 5 December at
6.30pm or
Wednesday 7 December
at 2.00pm to enjoy the
performance.
Friday 18 November is Children in Need day and we will be joining in with
the rest of the country to raise money for good causes. You can wear MUFTI
clothes to school! Please bring a donation of £2, which includes a cake at
break.
Cake Sale...
Please get baking and donate your delicious cakes to the Pre-Prep Dining
Hall from 8.10am on the morning of Friday 18 November. All pupils will
have the opportunity to enjoy a cake at break.
Mrs Seal
Best Bake Competition...
Rock and Pop auditions for Years 6, 7 & 8
Please bring one sample bake (cake, muffin, tray bake, biscuit, slice of cake
etc.) to Mrs Henderson’s Food Technology room on Friday morning.
Auditions for the spring term annual Rock and Pop Concert
will be starting on Monday 14 November. If you are
interested in auditioning for this hugely popular event,
please sign up for an audition slot on the Music department
notice board. Pupils may audition as soloists, or in groups
of up to 5. You will be asked to perform a verse and chorus
of your chosen song a cappella, however if any pupils wish
to accompany themselves (for example using piano, guitar
etc.), we would love to hear you.
The cake needs to be on a paper plate clearly labelled with your name and
tutor group. The rest of your cakes can be taken to the Pre-Prep dining
room. Prizes for the best ones!
We hope you enjoy taking part!
Autumn has definitely arrived at Millfield Prep and the children are enjoying
all the fun that comes with it!
The theme for this year’s concert will be 90’s music so
anything from Nirvana, Guns N’ Roses, Red Hot Chili
Peppers, Foo Fighters, Green Day, Oasis and Blur, through
to Whitney Houston, Alanis Morissette and, of course, the
Spice Girls! You do not have to audition with a 90’s song (if
successful we will give help and advice with song choices),
but please ensure the content of your song and the lyrics
are appropriate! Good luck to all pupils taking part!
Mrs Sturges
EAL Pupil of the Week
This fortnight has seen the rise of the
Sanchez Moreu dynasty. Last week it was
Quique, and this week it is Asunta. Who
knows what their older brother Eduardo
is getting up to at the Senior School.
Asunta has been working extremely hard
in all of her lessons and constantly wants
to improve herself. Her homework is
done with particular diligence and she
loves to add to any discussion or debate
in the classroom.
Mr Seal
This week Mrs Trevis spoke to some Year 8’s about her
forthcoming production of ‘Much Ado About Nothing’,
which will be performed at Strode Theatre next week.

Boarding Life
Before half-term the Edgarley Manor boys enjoyed this superb
creation for Harry Barton's birthday, courtesy of his very
creative mum.
Edgarley Manor boys picked apples and
blackberries from around the golf
course. They washed and peeled them
to create a crumble which they eagerly
devoured for evening snacks. Mrs
Henderson would be proud.
Hollies girls were treated to a number of games and activities for
Halloween. As you can see, the girls are all back in the swing of
things here and were loving the activities, wonderfully arranged by
Mrs Morgan-Hughes, Mrs Knight, Mrs Williams and Miss S.
On Monday the ghouls came out at Champion for some spooky fun!
Bloody fingers, slimed slices and devil cakes were consumed. Children
were mummified, blood filled boils were eaten against the clock and
gravity, apples dunked and ghostly faces were created. All slept
soundly as the ghostly figure of Mr James roamed the halls!
Watch the film to see what Halloween antics the @MPS_Chestnut
boys got up to on Monday night. Apple bobbing, doughnut
devouring, trick or treat trials and freaky food!

World Triathle Championships
The first ever World Triathle Championships were
held in Florida, USA during half-term. It brought
together the best competitors from counties all
around the world who had qualified to be there.
Triathle is a new event that challenges athletes to
shoot – swim – run, shoot – swim – run in a
continuous format. This is a hugely exciting event to
watch as athletes have to combine giving 100% effort
in the swimming and running and then apply full
concentration to shooting five targets as quickly as
possible. To add to the excitement, at the World
Championships, the swim was open water in waters
that were known to have alligators in… However this
did not phase our two Millfield Prep athletes,
Charlotte Taylor and Jack Amor.
Charlotte had a strong competition coming 10th and
only 50 seconds behind the winner.
Jack came 7th individually and won a bronze team
medal. He then went on to win another bronze medal
in the team relay.
What fantastic results!
We look forward to seeing this exciting sport grow
and Jack and Charlotte leading the way.

TENNIS
The Aegon girls’ A team (Caitlin McLoughlin, Ellen Jones, Francesca
Davis and Rebecca Stowell) beat Maynard 12-0 just before half term
and have qualified for the Regional finals in Exeter on Thursday 17
November.
Sadly, the boys’ team (Will Smith, Archie Williams, Izaak SalmonBrown and Callum Harvey) lost very narrowly in a tiebreak shoot out
to Torquay Grammar, so are now out of the competition.
Over half term Caitlin McLoughlin played in the U14 Winter National
Tour (WNT) at Bath and James Sclater and Francesca Davis both
played in the U12 WNT in Gosling. Francesca reached the quarterfinal of the consolation and James has been selected as an LTA
Aegon Future Star. Caitlin also won the U16 Grade 3 singles and
doubles (with Ellen Jones) at Ivybridge and will move to a 4.2 rating
at the next ratings run. Charlie Ruffell won the Grade 3 Mini Orange
Tournament at The Birchwood Junior Open in Cheshire, the Grade 3
at Shrewsbury and the Grade 4 at Martock. Niamh McLoughlin came
3rd in the Mini Orange Grade 4 at Lansdown and played the Grade 3
in Southampton. Both Charlie and Niamh have qualified for the
Grade 3 Winter Regional Tour at Taunton this weekend.
Jo Champion won the U14 girls’ singles at the Grade 5 in Wells and
Calum Jessett won the U14 boys’ consolation. He also reached the
final of the U12 singles in Sherborne and has moved up to an 8.2.

SWIMMING
Congratulations to Isabella Renwick, Ruby Smith, Maddie
Calvesbert-Sharp and Calvin Fry who competed in the InterCounty competition at the start of half term in Sheffield. This is a
very tough competition with some of the top age group
swimmers in the country coming together for a very exciting gala.
Isabella produced an outstanding swim in the 100m Breaststroke,
coming 2nd in a personal best time and smashed the school
record which stood for the last 17 years.
Ruby swam a best time in the 100m Butterfly and put in a strong
performance in the relay leg.
Maddie gave the relay team a great start in the Medley Relay in a
personal best.
Calvin swam a fabulous 100m Freestyle and went under the
minute for the first time.
Well done to all! Mrs Gouldby

This Week...
Reception
They say variety is the spice of life, well that
is certainly true here in Pre-Prep. This week
I have been starting to organise the activity
programme for next term and I suddenly
realised how many co-curriculum
opportunities there are for our young
children. We have our long standing
favourites like tennis, football, hockey and
dance but we also now offer squash, rugby
and yoga as well as a wide range of other
less energetic activities. This week I took my
camera along to Pre-Prep Riding Club and
managed to capture a few shots of the
children during their lesson. Now I may be
biased, being a horse owner myself, but
who can beat a half hour lesson with a four
legged furry beast after a busy day at
school? Watching the children, I realised
that the ‘riding’ is a small part of what they
are actually learning. Their listening skills,
balance, focus, flexibility and coordination
have all improved immensely and they are
gaining in self-confidence weekly - and
learning to take risks - as no horse is
bombproof and I can certainly vouch for the
unpredictable element of sitting on top of a
living, breathing animal! So whilst we may
all choose clubs and activities as a way of
filling in that end of school time, there is
another side to what we do – that of
developing interests, testing boundaries,
challenging fears and encouraging an
enjoyment in a pastime that could hopefully
last for many years to come.
Before half-term children in Reception had an
amazing time. We have made a large story map
for 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff'; built our very
own puppet theatre and puppets; we dressed up
as our favourite character from a book and
painted ourselves dressed up. We even did some
writing about our favourite book. We are very
pleased with all we have achieved.

Pre-School’s
Dinosaur Roar
The Friday's PreSchool children were
fantastic when they
acted out the story
Dinosaur Roar for
Book Week. They had
a great time making
their dinosaur head
pieces and
remembered the
different actions.
The Pre-School
teachers were very
proud of them!

Year 1 Explorers
Year 2 Get Creative
Years 1 and 2 met Mr Bond the explorer this week.
They were fascinated to hear all about his travels in
hot and cold countries. They saw photos of all the
different methods of travel that he had to use, from
camels to huskies and learnt why people are roped
together when travelling over the snow!
This week we have been learning about Diwali. The children have
made paper lanterns, colouring them in symmetrically and carefully
cutting them out. They also had a wonderful time following
instructions and making mango lassies and delicious apple cake
before half-term. Perhaps the children could show you how to make
them at home! We have had a great start to this half-term.
The children had a chance to try on some of his outfits
and asked him lots of interesting questions about the
places he explored.

End of Term
Before half-term the Minis enjoyed
lots of apple activities and were BRILLIANT chefs!
The children each made a ‘healthy doughnut’
using apple, cream cheese and sprinkles. Each
Mini also made an apple pie by bashing up
biscuits, spooning in stewed apple (the apples had
been picked from the Pre-School garden) and then
squirting cream on top! Lots of fun was had by all!
When the cooking was finished the Minis enjoyed
two painting activities as well! They used apples to
make prints on their art folders and corks to make
apples for an apple tree. Some beautiful artwork
was created both on the paper and on the
children! Other activities included playing with
apple pie playdough, scented oats, a magnetic
apple tree, apple boats and using tongs to do
apple bobbing! A very busy week!
Continued overleaf...
The children from the Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday groups also enjoyed lots of nursery rhyme
activities.
They took part in lots of sensory play based on each of
the nursery rhymes. Thank you to Grace’s mum who
gave us a beautiful tepee for our garden which we will
use lots and have already enjoyed reading nursery
rhymes in this week.
At the end of the session the Minis enjoyed looking and
exploring our new nursery rhyme sacks – we sang each
of the songs and played with the knitted characters. A
HUGE thank you to Oscar’s Granny who made them all
for us – the Minis loved them and they will use them
lots!
See you next week for Mini Gym where we will be doing
lots of fun jungle themed activities!
