Grandfather Clause/Voluntary Transfer Proposal

Current “Grandfather Clause” Proposal
The following is an outline of the currently proposed grandfather clause to the school
attendance boundary change options. The following groups of students would be exempt from
changing schools as outlined in the clause if the boundary change affects where they go to
school.



2014-2015 5th grade students could continue to attend their current school for one
more year
2014-2015 7th grade students could continue to attend their current school for one
more year
No transportation would be provided for grandfathered students.
Voluntary Transfer Option Proposal
The enrollment data for the proposed maps is based on all students who live in our district
attending their resident school. This means that students who live in the attendance boundary
of one school but have transferred to another school in our district would return to their
resident or “home” school. This includes all voluntary transfers and “capped out” students.
This does not include special education students who attend programming only offered in
certain schools.
The current proposal is for the district to continue to offer its Voluntary Transfer Option, which
allows families to request their student(s) attend a school other than their resident school. All
families who wish to transfer to another school under this option would have to submit a
request. These requests would be considered for placement based on available space under
the new boundaries and then in the following order:
1. Those who live the "old" school boundary area
2. Those who have been Voluntary Transfers for three years or more (known as “VT
Residents”)
3. Remaining Voluntary Transfers
4. Open Enrolled students
