Along with your dedicated board of directors, I am committed to the continued success and growth of the Varsity ‘S’ Club. As we embark on a new calendar year, we have many important projects on our docket for 2006. First and foremost is establishing our new Varsity ‘S’ office across from our clubroom in Spartan Stadium. New office space adjacent to our clubroom in the beautiful stadium addition will provide for a more professional setting and better efficiency. We hope to be moving into our new quarters within the next few months. Equally important is finishing our newly renovated clubroom. We are planning to create conversation areas, add new furniture and lamps, select paint colors for the walls, new accent carpeting and improve the overhead lighting. A concessions area will be built to allow us to host catered functions in the clubroom and offer a more extensive menu for football games. Visit us on the web at www.varsityS.msu.edu. Joey Spano, President winter 2 0 0 6 newsletter Varsity Clubroom Restoration Update During the construction of the Spartan Stadium addition, a water and condensation problem was discovered that over the years caused black mold to grow in our walls. Also, because of heavy rains while the old and new sections of the stadium were being joined, leaks destroyed our ceiling and carpet. Once the problem was discovered our TVs, pictures, and furniture were removed and stored in a safe dry location in the stadium. The black mold has been removed and to solve the problem of condensation and water seeping through the stadium deck a roof was built under the stadium seats over the top of the clubroom. We have all new drywall and fresh paint. For the first time, we have air conditioning in the clubroom and a sprinkler system. New Thank You!! Your donations, above and beyond annual and lifetime dues, are greatly appreciated. The names listed below have contributed to the club since the last newsletter went out. Some may have contributed but your donation came after the deadline for copy for the newsletter. We will publicly thank you in the next newsletter! In addition, we have gained approximately 400 square feet from a university storeroom on the north end of the room where the plasma TV is located. concession area will be added before the 2006 football season. than our current office in the basement of the Student Union. The first phase of the restoration was quickly completed by MSU and Kares Construction Company to allow us to use the Varsity Club Room this past fall. All the current construction has been completed at no cost to the Varsity Club. It was a long-standing Varsity Club tradition to have letter winners carve their names in the old wooden tabletops. Those tops are now mounted on the walls. We will have plaques for our Varsity Club award winners, as well as recognition for people who have purchased Varsity Club chairs and tables, and for those who have donated money earmarked for the Varsity Clubroom. It has been suggested we add a collage of pictures that will reflect the history of Spartan athletics, and include all sports. A new very spacious reception area has been added at the concourse level with the Varsity Club sign on the door. This area also has new wiring, lighting, ceiling tile, carpeting, and freshly painted walls. Once the construction is completed on the stadium addition we will have handicap accessibility to the clubroom via elevator. Our current restrooms will be removed this winter giving us additional space. We will then have two very large handicap accessible restrooms adjacent to the clubroom. Also, a new The Varsity Club office will be moved to the stadium this spring into the new office area across from the clubroom. The new office will be significantly larger and more conveniently located Basketball 1950-52 Barbara Branson Bob Brawley, Football 1964-66, Men’s Field Hockey 1965-67, Hockey 1965-67 Leslie Bruckner, Football 1937-39, Track 1939-40 Ralph Buffmyer, Football 1937-38 Kenneth Q. Coaches participating included John L. Smith, Tom Izzo, Rick Comley, Joanne P. McCallie, David Grews, Rita Arndt-Melis, Angela Goodman, and Darrell Gatson. Athletic Director Ron Mason and MSU President Lou Ann K. Simon were also in attendance. We had letter winners from 19 sports and 15 states and Canada returning to campus for the weekend activities. The weekend kicked off on Thursday with a cookout at our hotel headquarters. On Friday the group joined the Downtown Coaches Club for lunch, followed by an Open House in the Varsity Club Room, a tour of the new Spartan Stadium addition, and a bus tour of Campus. On Friday evening the Varsity Club hosted its Social Hour and Awards Banquet at the Kellogg Center, with keynote speaker, MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon, an appearance by Coach John L. Smith, and entertainment by the award winning MSU Alumni group 3 Men and a Tenor. On Saturday there were team and group pictures in front of the new bronze Sparty, followed by our Brunch and Pep Rally. Two of the guest speakers were former All-American football great Steve Juday, quarterback of the 1965 undefeated and national championship team; and Molly Brennan, who earned All-American honors in track, setting 12 different track records, while obtaining her degree in computer science and becoming a Rhodes Scholar. Various MSU coaches also gave a brief update on their sport. Sparty, the MSU Marching Band, the MSU Dance Team, and the MSU Cheerleaders conducted a Pep Rally. Following the Brunch and Pep Rally, letter winners followed the band onto the football field and formed a tunnel for Sparty and the team, which is always a highlight for our former letter winners. During the weekend, Lifetime Achievement and other special awards were presented, including the Breslin Award to George T.
