First off is a concerto by David Lang (Bang on a Can), with the acclaimed Brooklyn-based quartet So Percussion as our soloists. OCT 2–5 SERIES → TH1, FRM, SA1, SU1 BEETHOVEN CONCERTO CYCLE FINALE Itzhak Perlman Yuja Wang Lang Lang “SOME OF THE BEST BEETHOVEN PLAYING YOU WILL EVER HEAR.” Joshua Bell Herbie Hancock – BBC MUSIC 4 THE STORY OF THE SEASON Gustavo Dudamel Gustavo Dudamel and Leif Ove Andsnes bring their acclaimed three-year cycle of Beethoven’s music for piano and orchestra to a climactic conclusion with two major works, the “Emperor” Concerto and the Choral Fantasy, with its preview of the “Ode to Joy.” Dudamel also includes John Adams’ enthralling first piece for chorus and orchestra, Harmonium, based on striking poetry by John Donne and Emily Dickinson. OCT 9-12 SERIES → TH2, FR2, SA2, SU2 Cameron Carpenter HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BERLIOZ’ “HURRICANE MAMA” ROMEO & JULIET Lovingly referred to as the “French fries” and “Hurricane Mama” — so named by musical visionary Terry Riley after a night of improvising — Walt Disney Concert Hall’s extraordinary pipe organ has, in its 10 years, drawn leading organists from around the world, establishing a genuine tradition. One frequent guest organist is the highly gifted Cameron Carpenter, whose adventurist approach is an ideal match for the LA Phil. SALONEN, SAARIAHO & SIBELIUS DUDAMEL CONDUCTS SAINT-SAËNS These performances feature the U.S. premiere of Kaija Saariaho’s organ concerto Maan varjot (Earth Shadows), with Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting. Gustavo Dudamel conducts the world premiere of Stephen Hartke’s long-awaited “Organ” Symphony, along with a triumphal organ/orchestra work by Barber and Saint-Saëns’ own “Organ” Symphony, both featuring Carpenter. OCT 24–26 SERIES → FR3, SA3, SU1 PULLING OUT ALL THE STOPS Pipedreams’ Michael Barone hosts a musical birthday party for the organ, featuring numerous brilliant organists. NOV 23 6 NOV 20–22 Romeo & Juliet, considered one of Berlioz’ greatest and most original works, is given fresh context and heightened meaning in this re-imagination, featuring a newly commissioned video to accompany a complete performance by our Conductor Laureate, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and an exemplary cast. Bringing new light to the masterpiece that Berlioz called his “Dramatic symphony with chorus, vocal solos, and a prologue in choral recitative, composed after Shakespeare’s tragedy” are tenor Paul Groves, mezzo-soprano Susan Graham, bass-baritone John Relyea and the renowned Los Angeles Master Chorale. SERIES → TH1, FRC2, SAM A multimedia presentation launching the new in/SIGHT series on Friday evenings See p. 16. NOV 6, 7, 9 SERIES → TH2, FR1, SU2 DID YOU KNOW? →→ The organ’s 6,134 pipes range in size from a pencil to a telephone pole. →→ The instrument was a collaboration between architect Frank Gehry and L.A. organ designer Manuel Rosales. →→ The organ can range from barely audible sounds all the way to fortississimos that can obliterate a full orchestra. →→ The “French fries,” those specially curved wood pipes in front, are made of solid, vertical grain Douglas fir. →→ The pipes behind the façade include both metal pipes (tin and lead alloys) and wood pipes (Norwegian pine). Esa-Pekka Salonen “[SALONEN’S] WAY WITH [ROMEO & JULIET] TOOK IT TO A PITCH OF INTENSITY HERE. THE GOSSAMERLIGHT DEPICTION OF QUEEN MAB SPARKLED WITH DETAIL…” – FINANCIAL TIMES SERIES → OR1 THE STORY OF THE SEASON 7 MTT @ 70 MISSA SOLEMNIS WITH THE LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC Michael Tilson Thomas, our own L.A.-born and -bred musical hero, has had a remarkable ride. From leading the Young Musicians Foundation Debut Orchestra when he was only 19, he has gone on to conduct the world’s greatest orchestras (including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, for which he was Principal Guest Conductor from 1981-1985), collaborate with musicians from Stravinsky and Copland to Elvis Costello and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and become the galvanizing Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony. A trendsetter and longtime champion of American music, he received the National Medal of Arts, our nation’s highest award for artists. Join our celebration of this musical maverick as he turns 70, leading two orchestras with whom he has had long associations, each with a program that holds special meaning for him. 70 Los Angeles Master Chorale Beethoven’s spiritual monument is revealed afresh in a new multimedia production, conceived by MTT. JAN 9–11 BRILLIANT BRASS SERIES → FR1, SA3, SU1 LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA WITH YUJA WANG A delightful program of Classical-era music, including Haydn’s pioneering trumpet concerto and one of Mozart’s masterful and melodious horn concertos, features two of the Philharmonic’s new stars: Principal Trumpet Thomas Hooten, a Florida native, and Principal Horn Andrew Bain, originally from Australia. What a marvelous opportunity to get to know these stellar virtuosos, who are transforming our brass section! MTT has chosen favorite music by Britten, Gershwin and Sibelius. MAR 24 VISITING ORCHESTRAS CELEBRATE THIS MUSICAL MAVERICK FEB 6–8 SERIES → FR2, SA3, SU3 Thomas Hooten Michael Tilson Thomas Andrew Bain “...BY ANY STANDARD, [THE ORCHESTRA] PLAYED MAGNIFICENTLY; THE BRASS SECTION, IN PARTICULAR, DESERVES A MEDAL FOR COURAGE UNDER FIRE… THE LA PHIL DEMONSTRATED ONCE AGAIN WHY IT IS THE MOST CREATIVE, AND, THEREFORE, THE BEST, ORCHESTRA IN AMERICA.” – THE NEW YORKER GÓRECKI'S FOURTH SYMPHONY The essence of the LA Phil’s programming approach is the combination of old and new, with one shedding light on the other. In this example, a beloved touchstone (Sibelius’ Violin Concerto) is juxtaposed with an unheard work, the Fourth Symphony we commissioned from acclaimed Polish composer Henryk Górecki, whose Third Symphony became a cross-over hit, selling more than a million CDs. Although Górecki died before the Fourth was done, his composer son Mikolaj has taken the completed short score and, following his father’s instructions, realized the final work, which pays homage to fellow Polish composer Alexandre Tansman, whose own Stravinsky tribute opens this concert. JAN 16-18 8 THE STORY OF THE SEASON SERIES → FRC2, SA1, SU2 RENEW TODAY — LAPHIL.COM 9 CHINESE NEW YEAR ALICE IN WONDERLAND In a first for the LA Phil, we celebrate the Chinese New Year (Year of the Sheep) with a delightfully eclectic blend of East and West. Joined by prominent Chinese guest artists and conductor Xian Zhang, the orchestra will play music by Chinese composers as well as traditional masterpieces by Saint-Saëns, Chopin and Tchaikovsky. It will be a glorious celebration to remember, with some suprises in store! For her opera, Korean composer Unsuk Chin collaborated with American playwright David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly) to craft a libretto from Lewis Carroll’s beloved classic tales. Now, joining the collaboration for a completely new production are trendsetting English director Netia Jones (Where the Wild Things Are; 2013 Gala), who has transformed the use of video in concerts into an art form, and celebrated Finnish conductor Susanna Mälkki. FEB 19–21 Get ready for a feast of the imagination as “…familiar shapes hover at odd angles; age-old harmonies materialize from clouds of timbre and texture; childlike snatches of song appear and disappear, like the body of the Cheshire Cat” (The New Yorker). “Once in a while, Ms. Chin throws in pure lyricism, as when a children’s chorus sings a breathtakingly beautiful setting of the Mock Turtle’s lament” (The Wall Street Journal). SERIES → TH2, FRC1, SA2 LATE Presented in collaboration with LA Opera MASTERWORKS Whether he dies young or old, a composer’s final musical thoughts are cherished as his highest and most profound artistic expressions. In the New Year, you are presented with a splendid opportunity to hear late piano masterworks by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert, as well as Bruckner’s moving final symphony, all in masterful performances. Xian Zhang MOZART & BRUCKNER ANDRÁS SCHIFF Eminent Swedish conductor Herbert Blomstedt, celebrated for numerous prized recordings, leads Bruckner’s Ninth and is joined by the masterful Richard Goode for Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 27, K. 595. A pianist of the highest rank, who has dazzled audiences here with cycles of Beethoven and Bach, presents two related recitals of late sonatas by HAYDN, MOZART, BEETHOVEN, and SCHUBERT. Before Dudamel takes the orchestra on tour, we proud Angelenos get a chance to hear their tour programs, designed to display the musicians at their best. The first of two features Mahler’s soul-searching Sixth Symphony, the “Tragic.” The other program pairs John Adams’ jazz-tinged portrait of L.A., City Noir, with Gustavo’s fresh approach to the beloved “New World” Symphony, Dvořák’s reflection on America. This year, the LA Phil embraces the theme of Contemporary Americans by focusing on the wildly creative music being made by American composers, both established (i.e., Reich, Glass, Wolfe, Lang, Gordon) and those with careers-in-the-making (Norman, Shaw, Dessner, etc.). Led by Gustavo Dudamel, the range includes Pulitzer Prize-winning music, video installations, vocal, chamber and orchestral music, as well as such guest performers as the Labèque sisters and the Calder Quartet.
