The GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies / Leibniz-Institut für Globale und
Regionale Studien is an independent social-science research institute based in Hamburg. It
analyses political, social and economic developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the
Middle East and combines this analysis with innovative comparative research on international
relations, development and globalisation, violence and security, and political systems. The GIGA
seeks to hire a
Student Research Assistant
to support the Land Matrix Database Management team (http://www.landmatrix.org).
Tasks include:
 Adding new and updating existing land deals in the database
 Processing and analysing data
 Communication with partners in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America
 Support the conceptual and technical development of the database and its public interface
 Supporting the organisation of events
 Communication with users of the database
 Assisting with documentation, publications and presentations
Core requirements:
 Advanced Bachelor (min. 3rd semester) or Master student of (agricultural) economics,
geoinformatics, geomatics, geography, agronomics or political science
 Interested in large-scale land acquisition / land-based investments
 Advanced knowledge of data processing and (descriptive) analysis
 Proficient knowledge of MS Office product
 Working thoroughly, independent and precise
 Proficient English language skills (written and oral)
Preferred (plus):
 Knowledge of the statistical software STATA
 Advanced knowledge of geographic information system (GIS) and/or programming
language PYTHON
 Further language skills, in particular Spanish, Portuguese, French
 Seeking for long(er)-term commitment (up to three years)
