WHAT IS COMPETITION?

STRAIGHT TALK FROM THE CEO
WHAT IS COMPETITION?
Some people are naturally more competitive than
others. Some are even competitive to the point of
winning at all costs. They get mad, scheme and
plot, and if they can’t win, they get even.
But let’s look at the word competition. Most of
the time, one person, one group, one horse, etc., is
trying to outdo all the rest in order to be the “Winner.” Maybe the reward is money or something
valuable; other times it’s only prestige or bragging
rights.
apples to apples here? But your cooperative is still
very competitive with the surrounding IOUs.
And what about other cooperative benefits? Who
do you call when you have a problem or need
service? You call the cooperative and you talk to a
live person. Even after hours, our dispatchers are
real people. You cannot know how many calls we
get when there is a storm, from IOU customers,
cont’d on page 24D
Change the word to competitive and the whole
concept changes. Competitive means, on an even
playing field, you are trying to be as good as everyone else. You can keep up and hold your own.
You don’t have to be number 1, but you certainly
want to be right up there near the top.
Did I say “even playing field”? Every now and
then, I am told how much higher Grayson
RECC’s rates are than the neighboring investor-owned utilities’ (IOUs). If you have had a
chance to compare bills with an IOU customer
lately, you might want to rethink that assumption.
Let’s look at competition from the perspective of
your cooperative. First of all, we didn’t compete to
get the territory we serve. No one else would serve
it! It wasn’t profitable! Investor-owned means you
buy stock in the company to make a profit, to
make money.
Second, it’s hard to be competitive when the cooperative has six houses per mile of line, stretched
over six counties, compared to at least 36 houses
per mile of line, with a lot of it on city streets
and black-topped roads. Are we really comparing

frustrated because they can’t find a number to call and report their
outage.
Other benefits include being able to come to our office. Your friends
and neighbors are cooperative employees and directors, who are always willing to talk to you about your concerns. You can call us toll
free; you can use email; you can pay your bill online; you can report
an outage online; and you can go to our website and find all kinds
of information about the cooperative and the territory we serve.
We strive to be the best that we can be for our members. Safe and
reliable service to our members is our strong point and yet we stay
competitive with the IOUs. The difference is, we know our members. We don’t have to make money for investors.
Sincerely,
Carol Hall Fraley, President and CEO
