Thank you for supporting CL’s Resident Assistance Program
I feel like every year our annual campaign is more and more successful and this year is no different, all thanks to the
generosity of so many. Your contribution means we can continue to provide housing and support to our physically
disabled individuals. Our Resident Assistance program is what makes the independence possible for our residents. It is
the program you support when you donate to Creative Living.
Who are our RA’s?
Your donation makes an immediate impact
on our residents.
Sometimes it’s hard to relay how much of an
immediate impact your donation has on our
residents. The RA’s provide 24 hour/day x 365
days/year x 2 complexes which equals 17,520
hours /year with a budget this year of over
$290,000. Did you know we have an RA at both
complexes from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m? The tasks the
night time RA performs are very different than
what the RA’s do during the day. At any one time
the RA is the only abled bodied person on site.
They are kept busy re-positioning residents in
bed, adjusting the temperature in the apartment,
emptying leg bags, and helping with transfers
from chair to bed.
Traditionally the RA’s meet the Sunday before exams for food,
networking and open discussion of ideas to make our program
better.
“Living here at Creative Living has given me the independence to live a very fulfilling life. The resident assistant’s are to
thank for that. There is one shift in particular that needs to be covered to give me
peace of mind to live on my own. That shift is the night shift. If anything were to
happen during the night we need someone highly qualified to help us in case there
is any type of emergency. Thankfully we have the perfect person in Carla.
Carla is always there for us and quick to get to us during the night. There have
been several situations where I have needed her during an emergency where I
myself would not know how to handle the situation. Carla has so much
experience working with us that she knows how to take care of any situation
thrown at her. I am so thankful to have her to help us almost every night so that
I can have that peace of mind and sleep easily. You can always rely on her to
be there, to work hard, to get the job done quickly and correctly, and somehow
it’s like she can almost see in the dark so she is able to help you without barely
disturbing your sleep. Thank you, Carla for all that you do for us!” -Resident,
Carla Nixon
Adam Helbling
“Carla is a wonderful person and I don’t know what I wuold do without her at night. She never forgets to come in when
I need her. She always lets me know when I am running low on supplies so I can order them in time. I feel very safe
knowing she is working the overnight shift.” - Resident, Steve Swisher

Senior Manager,
Marketing, Commications & Donor
Relations
Hi! My name is Sarah Maggied and
I’m so excited to be here at Creative
Living! Originally from Hudson, Ohio;
I’m grateful to call Columbus home.
My work experience ranges from
restaurant management to heading
up print & digital advertising for the
local publication, Edible Columbus.
Most recently, I’ve been busy building
websites, creating social media content
and marketing materials for a wide
range of local
clients. I am
passionate
about
establishing
sincere
relationships,
creating and
teaching the
skills each
small business
needs to thrive.
I’ve enjoyed becoming a part of the
community, living in German Village
for the past 13 years. I keep busy with
my family and friends – especially my
8 year old son and a 12 year old lab
rescue. We are heavily involved in Cub
Scouts, sports and spending as much
time with family as possible. We love
hiking, kayaking and exploring the
hidden gems Columbus has to offer.
On the weekends, you’ll find us at the
Art Museum or roaming around the
Book Loft. I enjoy supporting the arts in
Columbus, old movies and traveling as
much as possible.
I’m truly honored to work for an
organization with such an amazing
mission. I can’t wait to meet each
member of the Creative Living
Community!
Unfortunately, Margherita became sick in
the fall and was not able to return to work.
We all wish her well in her recovery.
Financial News
Annual Report 2016
FINANCIAL REPORT for Fiscal Year Ending September 30, 2016
At Creative Living, we count on the support of individuals, corporations, foundations and service organizations to
help us in our mission to provide assisted living for individuals with severe physical disabilities. The continued success
of Creative Living requires maintaining high quality facilities and our Resident Assistance Program. This year our budget
for the RA program is over $290,202. All of our donors should trust and be assured that their contribution is not only
needed but vital to our resident’s quest for independence. Their independence is made possible through our Resident
Assistance Program. It takes over $992,675 to operate our organization. Contributions make up over one-third of our
income. Financial and in-kind support is vitally important to transforming and impacting the lives of the residents of
Creative Living.

Creative Living’s Mission:
Creative Living exists as a non-profit organization
encouraging independent living for adults with severe
physical disabilities by providing wheelchair accessible

environment for people to learn, work, live and

HUD and CREATIVE LIVING
HUD, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, is very much a part of Creative Living. HUD provides
subsidy for both CLI and CLII residents. HUD provides the funds to help low income individuals afford housing.
Income minus allowable expenses times 30% equals the amount a person must pay of their own money to live
in a HUD subsidized apartment. HUD will pay (subsidize) the remainder of the rental cost.

We haven’t heard from Marly in awhile, on her blog, because she has
become employed!
I started my new job October 17th and so far so good! I work
at Teleperformance in the
ClearCaptions project as a
captioning agent. Basically, I help
the hearing impaired, utilize phone
services. The non-assisted user will speak and I repeat what they say
verbatim to recognition software. The software captions my speech and
the assisted user is now able to read what the caller is communicating to
them on their telephone screen and reply. So far it has been fun training my
profile to respond accurately to my speech patterns and dictate correctly
what I say. This project, due to the intrusive nature of the calls, is regulated
by the FCC. It is not glamorous but it has been a great first job back into the world of employment. Everyone has been
accommodating and I am learning so much as well as meeting awesome new people.
Mingling at the holiday party!
Another successful holiday party is in the books! Residents and volunteers enjoyed an evening of good food, wrapping
presents, and spending time together.
Special Thanks to Volunteers
Columbus Woman’s Club
Since Creative Living’s founding in 1974, this group has consistently given their time and support as our friends and
volunteers. Most recently they came with holiday goodies and they decorated both of our lobbies. The Columbus
Woman’s Club chose Creative Living as the beneficiary at their spring fundraiser.
OSU Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service: Students visited Creative Living to help take down our holiday
decorations. They also helped pick up litter around our facility!
Former resident Ron Lofton passed away
January 6, 2017 after a short illness. Ron
lived at Creative Living from 1986-1990.
He spent 20 years as a counselor in the
Office of Disabilities Services at Columbus
State.
The OSU Scholarship Students returned
to Creative Living and brought Valentine’s
cards & cookies for each resident.
In Memory of Barbara Doak
1938-2017
Barbara was Creative Living’s first Executive Director and
in her 20 years at the helm she spearheaded a major
renovation of Perry St. and the building of a second complex
on 10th Ave. She was responsible for the
• foundation,
policies, relationships and procedures of Creative Living
that are still in place today. She spent her life in service to
others including extensive volunteer work with Nationwide
Children’s Hospital. She is survived by her children Debra
and Scott and three grandchildren.

Thank you to Glenn and Linda Ruediger, parents of former resident Dave
McLane. Their gift of stock that realized $13,250.31 when sold will help
Creative Living maintain the Resident Assistant program for our residents.
We were pleased to receive a $25,000
grant from a wonderful foundation that
would like to remain anonymous. This
foundation has given us support since
2008, with greatly appreciated increases
over the years.
Board member Tim Adelmann has donated $10,000
to support the Resident Relief Fund. This ensures that
every resident gets a gift card on their birthday.
We received a $2500 check from the Beatrice I. and Alan R. Weiler
Philanthropy Fund of the Columbus Jewish Foundation. The Weiler’s
are longtime supporters of Creative Living plus they established an
Independent Living Fund for the residents to use when they move
out.
Creative Living has a first in employing an RA who not only gives his compensation back to CL but with additional
contribution. Mike and his wife are retired nurses who were at Dodd Hall and took care of many of our residents. He
said he was looking for something to do in his retirement. Mike and his wife, Elaine have been making a monthly
contribution to Creative Living. He said “it looked like you could use the money”

Workplace giving
Creative Living loves “workplace giving” programs. We have quite a growing list of donors who give through their place
of employment. Of course, when companies make a match, the value of their donation is even nicer.
