Appendices
Executive reports
Vice President’s Report (incl TNT) – Kendrick Hamilton
Thursday Night Training by Craven SPORT Services.
TNT was run again this year. Craven SPORT Services provided coaching and work out plans.
Neal Zaluski and Bruce Craven attended the TNT rides to present the workout and lead the work
outs. The average attendance was 13 riders including a substantial range of age and cycling
ability. Work out locations were Grasswoods loop, the beaver creek loop, patience lake road,
Eagle ridge, and when it started getting dark fast Iron As.
Three time trials were held (the fourth got rained out). The time trial format was changed up a bit.
The faster riders started first, with the less fast riders starting later. This meant the less fast riders
would not be subjected to being passed even more times.
Recommendations for next year:
solicit Craven SPORT services to do the workouts again.
try having more TNTs on patience lake road, or another long quiet road. Avoid the loops so the
not as fast riders don't get repeatedly lapped by the fast riders.
Other notes: if members are looking for physiotherapists or coaching services, please consider
Craven SPORT services as they sponsor the club.
Clothing sales:
Horizon started the new cycling kit design after many years of the sun burst design. A large order
was made at the start of the year. Most of the jerseys sold, some of the arm warmers and some of
the shorts. The club still has a substantial supply of shorts. I recommend next year just after road
ready boot camp, the club put in an order for a moderate number of jerseys. Order womens S,M,L
and mens M,L,XL. Give a few weeks warning of the order so people who want a size not listed
can get in an order. An earlier order emphasizing long sleeve jerseys may be do-able.
Safety and Advocacy Liaison Report – Ray Wight
Once again the club has taken a proactive approach to membership safety on the roads. This
included the Road Ready Boot Camp for beginners and regular safety tips before each ride.
Members were reminded to keep safe riding practices in mind while on the road. Despite these
measures there were a couple of accidents that required particular attention to members involved.
There are many factors that contribute to an accident. Most factors are within the control of the
riders. However, external factors such as road conditions and weather can play a part in
potentially hazardous situations. Measures were taken by the executive to promote safe travel on
the roads. Example, riding single file on the narrow stretch of the Casino Road.
The club continues to have a representative on the Saskatoon Cycling Advisory committee.

 Special Events 2014 - Summary Report
The season began with the Spring Potluck on very cold March 22, 2014, evening at Sue
Ashburner’s house. We had 28 people show up and pack into Sue’s house. Thank you
to Sue for once again opening her house up to a bunch of weird cyclists! :-) There was a
great chat and anticipation about the season to come. One suggestion for next year
would be to keep a better note of who is bringing what type of food as there were lots of
deserts and only one salad at this event.
Horizon held an Open House at Doug’s Spoke ‘n Sport on April 9, 2014 to help teach
basic bike maintenance and answer cycling-related questions. There were around 2030 people that stopped by.
On May 10, 2014 we held the pizza night at the Athena Restaurant in Sutherland to
welcome new cyclists to the club and introduce them to our veteran riders. I wasn't
there, however I gather that they placed us in the adjoining Specklebelly's Brewpub
instead of the family restaurant; which meant riders accompanied with their kids could
not get in. However, we did get almost 40 people out that evening including a few new
riders.
The Summer BBQ was held out at the Nostalgia Country Hall on July 26, 2014. Despite
the forecast of showers for that evening it turned out to be warm and dry and a fantastic
venue, already kitted out with a kitchen, BBQ, fire pits, benches etc. 25 people showed
up including Chris (French guy cycling across Canada) and enjoyed burgers and a great
assortment of food and drink. The mosquitoes ended the night before Larry got too
rowdy and started to shout about BEARS! :-)
The Harvest Century Ride and Banquet was held on September 7, 2014. 61 people
completed ride (25 did the 100km and 36 did the 100 mile ride). Just like the Prairie
Gran Fondo, we had great weather on the day. Many thanks to the HC committee
members for organizing such a successful event and the volunteers who ‘manned’ the
feed stations and to our sag wagon drivers for looking after us all on the day. 72 people
signed up for the post-ride banquet held out at the Berry Barn. The HC committee also
did a great job in organizing this part of the event; we had a great time and managed to
make it out of there just as the wind picked up and a storm blew in. We even had one
lucky person win a brand new mountain bike from Bike Doctor in our prize raffle.

Special (aka “Feature”) Rides Report 2014
Submitted by Jeff May-Melin (Special Ride Coordinator)
to Horizon 100 Cycling Club at AGM, Saturday Nov. 15, 2014
Horizon 100’s Feature Rides are low frequency, high profile rides. Each feature ride distinguishes
itself from the regular Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Saturday rides by including a unique
aspect to the ride or by featuring a particular kind of cycling. The feature rides provide variety,
challenge, and represent a goal for individuals to work towards (typically distance). They provide
membership with a more rounded and enriched club and cycling experience. The feature rides
show Horizon 100 to be a dynamic organization with much to offer aspiring cyclists.
Feature rides can be broken into two categories; “open rides” and “exclusive rides”. The exclusive
rides are significant in they are held for members only with the intent of providing a unique
experience apart from regular rides with the hope of fostering a spirit of club camaraderie. The
open feature rides are “open” to members as well as the general cycling public who do not
necessarily need to be club members to participate. These open rides allow Horizon 100 to fulfill
it’s mission statement “to develop and enhance road biking opportunities for cyclists at various
ability levels in the community of Saskatoon”. By inviting the public to these open rides it also helps
the club meet it’s grant obligations.
In 2014 Horizon 100 held six Feature Rides, in chronological order:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
Alberta Ride (June 5-10)
Midnight Howler (June 21 & June 28)
SIGA Prairie Gran Fondo (July 6)
Biggar Brevet (July 20)
Harvest Century (Sept 7)
Founder’s Ride (Sept 21)
Due to their higher profile nature, feature rides require increased levels of planning, organization
and effort to execute. Executive members share lead responsibility for these rides with the help of
dedicated club member committees. Therefore other executive members will provide some of the
individual ride reports below as indicated.
1. Alberta Ride – Lead: Tony Wilson – see Statistician’s Report
2. Midnight Howler – Lead: Jeff May-Melin
The Midnight Howler ride is a “member only” feature ride that is unique in that it takes place, as it’s
name suggests, in the dark! Ironically it occurs on the shortest night of the year, ie. the summer
solstice. This year the ride occurred on June 21st with a very real threat of rain, lightning and
mayhem! Four members set out at 10PM from Doug’s Spoke ‘n’ Sport and road the Hwy 5 /
Patience Lake route. This route is chosen because it has relatively light traffic. The four members
were: Ron Mantyka, Rob Howse, Tony Wilson & Jeff May-Melin.
Due to the weather being suspect on June 21st resulting in the low turnout of riders it was decided
to conduct a second Midnight Howler the following Saturday, June 28th. Same route, start location
and time. Many more “howlers” were in attendance.
10
3. SIGA Prairie Gran Fondo – Lead: Jeff May-Melin
2014 represented the 3rd year that Horizon 100 hosted the Prairie Gran Fondo as part of
Velopalooza: Saskatoon’s Celebration of Cycling. The Gran Fondo is conducted as an “open” ride
and as such the club carries extra insurance so non-club and non-SCA members are able to
participate.
The 2014 SPGF committee were Ron Mantyka, Merlin Toth, Mark Ashley, Jeff Hehn, Ray Wight,
Susan Burton, Larry McCammon and Jeff May-Melin.
In contrast to previous years the 2014 PGF committee set ambitious short term and long term
goals for the Prairie Gran Fondo.
Short term goals:
a. conduct a “true” gran fondo in the spirit of gran fondo events conducted elsewhere in North
America and Europe characterized by a ride that is:
 supported with multiple rest stops
 marked coarse with partial or full road closure
 timed
b.
c.
d.
e.
multiple distances that participants can choose from
become the marquee event of the Velopalooza week
attract participants from outside Saskatoon and Saskatchewan
100 participants
Long term Goals:
a. become “the” road cycling event to attend in the prairie region of Canada – an event which cyclists
in the prairie provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta will “mark on their calendars”
b. 1000 participants
To reach the short and long term goals the committee were successful in securing sponsorship
from several businesses and title sponsorship from Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA)
and the event became known as SIGA Prairie Gran Fondo.
*** See appendix at end of report for SPGF further specific statistics and financials ***
4. Biggar Brevet – Lead: none specified
The Brevet to Biggar was held on July 20th. This is a member’s only feature ride. It is conducted as
a randonneur or a audax ride where the participant’s are self-supported and the riders sign in at
check points. Approximately 10-12 members completed the 200KM journey to Bigger and back
with many happy reports from the riders.
5. Harvest Century – Lead: Brian Cowan – see Special Events Report
11
6. Founder’s Ride – Lead: Jeff May-Melin
The Founder’s ride is a final feature ride of the season and is exclusively for members only. The
Founder’s ride is held in honour and appreciation of the five founding members of the Horizon 100
cycling club. The ride through Prince Albert National Park is one on the prettiest route’s that
Saskatchewan has to offer and the 2014 edition did not disappoint! The weather was sunny the
whole 120 KM from the Waskesiu townsite to Chirstopher Lake and back. 26 riders attended
including a new member from LaRonge.
