Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCB) Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) Miniature Circuit Breaker The Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCB) are current-limiting devices. These MCB’s force a fast and efficient extinguishing of the arc, which results in a limiting of the short circuit current before it can go up to its peak. The time tE (tripping response time between the short circuit occurrence and the separation of the contacts) is extremely short, due to the use of the electromagnetic principle in the magnetic trip mechanism. The oscilloscope reading shows time tE = 0.7 msec. The fast and wide contact separation causes the rapid elongation of the arc, which establishes a sharply rising arc voltage across the contacts. Parallel to that, the arc is guided between special plastic plates to the arc chamber by the “arc guide”. In the arc chamber, the electrodynamic and thermodynamic forces continue the established movement of the arc to the plates of the miniature de-ion grid, which extinguishes it. The full burning voltage UB = 340 V is reached after 1.4 msec. The strong rising arc voltage works as an additional impedance, which limits the short circuit current (I = 4.5 kA) and extinguishes it far before (4.3 msec) the natural waveform zero crossover. The selectivity diagram shows the let-through-∫i2 dt (Joule/Energy Integral) of a full sine half wave (1) and MCB’s (2, 3, 4). All the shown values of the Joule-Integral (let-through-∫i2 dt) are maximum values of the MCB’s switch-off time, which only occur when the short circuit current develops at a moment of the sine half wave where the angle is between 600 and 900. In addition, the diagram shows the melting curve (let-through-∫i2 dt) of fuses according to DIN VDE 0636. The crossing of the MCB – and fuse – trip characteristics show the short circuit current up to which selectivity is still maintained. The melting curve of the fuses represents the minimum value. For example, the crossing of the curves of a B 16 A MCB and a 35 A fuse is 1.5 kA. The value for a 100 A fuse is about RA. That means, that the MCB will trip up to these short circuit currents and the fuse stays intact. The MCB’s, due to their strong current and energy limiting capabilities, meet all the requirements for the highest current and energy limiting Class 3 according to DIN VDE 0641 Part 11 / EN 60898 / IEC 60898. As a matter of fact, the real let-through values are much lower. The FI Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker is required – according to the VDE – to disconnect shock-hazard voltages, which occur due to an insulation fault, within 0.2 msec. Earth fault currents are also interrupted when they reach the rated fault trip current level (Fire Protection). Besides the protection against indirect contact, the devices with a rated fault trip current of 30 mA provide increased, additional protection against direct contact of live parts (Insulation fault). In addition, there is a possibility that direct contact could occur with live parts if the ground and live wires have been switched or if the ground wire has been interrupted – these two events could also cause current to pass through the human body. All loads and system parts in an FI protective circuit must be grounded. Earth Leakage Circuit Breakers are sensitive to pulsating DC currents according to the requirements of DIN EN 610081/DIN VDE 0664 Part 10 and they are marked with the symbol. These standards include tests with sine wave form AC fault currents along with DC fault currents, which become zero during one period of the line frequency. These fault currents become more and more common due to the increased use of electronic equipment in residual and industrial applications. In addition, the FI’s are pulse current resistant and they withstand a prospective short circuit current of 10 kA when protected by a properly sized back-up fuse. The symbol indicates this rating. FI’s are equipped with a test button. By pressing this button, the device simulates an artificial fault current, which causes the FI to trip. It is recommended to test the functionality of the FI by pressing the test button after the initial installation and every six months thereafter. Depending on the application, other standards (e.g. Accident Prevention Standard) might have different test interval procedure recommendations. The minimum voltage requirement for the test button to work is 110 V AC. 4-pole ELCB 4-pole 3-pole 2-pole Auxiliary Contact 23 Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) Tripping Characteristics Technical Data 24 Regulations DIN EN 61008-1 / DIN VDE 0664 T10 Number of Poles Two-pole, four-pole Breaking Capacity 10 kA combined with the corresponding appropriate fuse Maximum Fuse Fuse according to DIN VDE 0636 operating class gL for two-pole: 63 A for four-pole: 100 A Rated Voltage AC Two-pole 125/230 V 50/60 Hz, four-pole 230/400 V also applicable for two-pole 120/240 V 50/60 Hz, four-pole 240/415 V Rated Current Two-pole 16, 25 and 40 A Four-pole 25, 40 and 63 A Rated Residual Operating Current Two-pole 10, 30 and 300 mA Four-pole 30, 300 and 500 mA Fault Current Type AC fault currents and pulsating DC fault currents AC Fault Current Tripping Characteristic Must not trip at 0,5 x I∆n Muast trip at 1 x I∆n Pulsed DC Fault Current Tripping Characteristic Must not trip at Control angle 0° el. 0,35 x I∆n, 90° el 0,25 x I∆n, 135° el. 0,11 x I∆n Must not trip at 1,4 x I∆n Ambient Air Temperature Storage and Transport Conditions -25 °C to +45 °C -40 °C to +60 °C Dimensions Compare page 23 Mechanical Endurance 10.000 switch ons and 10.000 switch offs Touch Protection Safe for fingers and back of hand according to DIN VDE 0106 T 100 BGV A2 (VBG4) Isolation Group According to DIN VDE 0110 Group 1 CTI ≥ 600 V Protection Type to IEC 60529 / EN 60529 IP 20 Installation Position Any Mounting Din-rail according to DIN EN 60715 35 mm Resistance to climatic conditions According to DIN IEC 60068-2 – 30 Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) Technical Data Connectable Conductor Cross Sections of Four-Pole ELCB Self-adjusting clamp bottom Self-adjusting clamp bottom Type of Conductor Maximum Minimum Maximum Minimum Single Wire 25 mm2 1.5 mm2 25 mm2 1.5 mm2 Multiple Wire 25 mm2 (10 mm2) 25 mm2 (10 mm2) Fine Wire with Ferrule 16 mm2 1.5 mm2 16 mm2 1.5 mm2 Torque Maximum 3 Nm Connectable Conductor Cross Sections of Two-Pole ELCB Self-adjusting clamp bottom Self-adjusting clamp bottom Type of Conductor Maximum Minimum Maximum Minimum Single Wire 16 mm2 1.0 mm2 16 mm2 1.0 mm2 Multiple Wire 16 mm2 (10 mm2) 16 mm2 (10 mm2) Fine Wire with Ferrule 10 mm2 1.0 mm2 10 mm2 1.0 mm2 Torque Maximum 2 Nm Bus Bar/ Terminal To up 2 mm thickness Not possible Combined, Conductor and Bus Bar or Terminal Two-Pole up to 16 mm2 / four-pole up to 25 mm2 and 2 mm thickness Not possible Auxiliary Switches for Additional Mounting on Four-Pole ELCB Contacts 1 NC + 1 NO Rated Voltage 230 V~ Isolation Voltage 400 V~ Thermal Constant Current 10 A Rated Current Usage Usage Usage Usage category category category category AC – 14: 6 A / 230 V~ AC – 15: 3.6 A / 230 V~ DC – 12: 1 A / 220 V — … DC – 13: 0.3 A / 220 V — … 25 Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) to DIN EN 61008-1 / DIN VDE 0664 T10 Rated Current A Modules Maximum Ground Resistance at 50 V at 25 V Ω Ω Precautionary Mesure Maximum gL A Article No. Weight g/each Packing units 290 1 Two-Pole, Rated Residual Operating Current I∆n 10 mA 16 2 5000 2500 63 FI21.01 Two-Pole, Rated Residual Operating Current I∆n 30 mA 25 2 1660 830 63 FI22.03 290 1 40 2 1660 830 63 FI23.03 290 1 Two-Pole, Rated Residual Operating Current I∆n 0,3 A 25 2 170 80 63 FI22.30 290 1 40 2 170 80 63 FI23.30 290 1 FI42.03 FI43.03 FI44.03 450 450 450 1 1 1 FI42.30 FI43.30 FI44.30 450 450 450 1 1 1 FI42.50 FI43.50 FI44.50 450 450 450 1 1 1 Four-Pole, Rated Residual Operating Current I∆n 30 mA 25 40 63 4 4 4 1660 1660 1660 830 830 830 100 100 100 Four-Pole, Rated Residual Operating Current I∆n 0,3 A 25 40 63 4 4 4 170 170 170 80 80 80 100 100 100 Four-Pole, Rated Residual Operating Current I∆n 0,5 A 25 40 63 26 4 4 4 100 100 100 50 50 50 100 100 100 Accessories for Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) Auxiliary Contact Module Type of Contact Contacts Article No. Weight g/each Packing units ⁄2 2 auxiliary contacts 1 NC + 1 NO HFI11 45 10 1 HFI11 27 ABL SURSUM Bayerische Elektrozubehör GmbH & Co.
