Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCB)
Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB)
Miniature Circuit Breaker
The Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCB) are current-limiting devices. These MCB’s force a fast and efficient extinguishing
of the arc, which results in a limiting of the short circuit current before it can go up to its peak.
The time tE (tripping response time between the short circuit occurrence and the separation of the contacts) is extremely
short, due to the use of the electromagnetic principle in the magnetic trip mechanism. The oscilloscope reading shows
time tE = 0.7 msec. The fast and wide contact separation causes the rapid elongation of the arc, which establishes a
sharply rising arc voltage across the contacts. Parallel to that, the arc is guided between special plastic plates to the arc
chamber by the “arc guide”. In the arc chamber, the electrodynamic and thermodynamic forces continue the established
movement of the arc to the plates of the miniature de-ion grid, which extinguishes it. The full burning voltage UB = 340 V
is reached after 1.4 msec. The strong rising arc voltage works as an additional impedance, which limits the short circuit
current (I = 4.5 kA) and extinguishes it far before (4.3 msec) the natural waveform zero crossover.
The selectivity diagram shows the let-through-∫i2 dt (Joule/Energy Integral) of a full sine half wave (1) and MCB’s (2, 3, 4).
All the shown values of the Joule-Integral (let-through-∫i2 dt) are maximum values of the MCB’s switch-off time, which
only occur when the short circuit current develops at a moment of the sine half wave where the angle is between 600
and 900. In addition, the diagram shows the melting curve (let-through-∫i2 dt) of fuses according to DIN VDE 0636. The
crossing of the MCB – and fuse – trip characteristics show the short circuit current up to which selectivity is still maintained. The melting curve of the fuses represents the minimum value. For example, the crossing of the curves of a B 16 A
MCB and a 35 A fuse is 1.5 kA. The value for a 100 A fuse is about RA. That means, that the MCB will trip up to these
short circuit currents and the fuse stays intact.
The MCB’s, due to their strong current and energy limiting capabilities, meet all the requirements for the highest current
and energy limiting Class 3 according to DIN VDE 0641 Part 11 / EN 60898 / IEC 60898. As a matter of fact, the real
let-through values are much lower.

The signal contact and the auxiliary contact are each fitted with a floating change-over
contact.
Both contacts only indicate when the main appliance is overloaded or short circuited but not
when switched off by hand.
The auxiliary contact clearly shows the switched condition of the main appliance, i.e. when
overloaded or short circuited and switched off by hand.

Temperature
30 °C + 5 °C
20 °C + 5 °C
Influence of the surrounding temperature on the thermal release:
decrease of the current values with higher ambient temperature and
increase with lower temperatures of approximately 5 % per 10 °C difference in temperature.
Frequency Range
162⁄3 to 60 Hz
With higher frequencies the electromagnetic tripping values increase by
approximately of factor 1,1 at 100 Hz; 1,2 at 200 Hz; 1,4 at 400 Hz; DC at 1,5

Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB)
The Earth Leakage Protective Circuit is a safety measure to ensure proper protection against indirect contact of parts
and of the entire electrical system. The FI Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker is required – according to the VDE – to disconnect shock-hazard voltages, which occur due to an insulation fault, within 0.2 msec. Earth fault currents are also interrupted when they reach the rated fault trip current level (Fire Protection).
Besides the protection against indirect contact, the devices with a rated fault trip current of 30 mA provide increased,
additional protection against direct contact of live parts (Insulation fault). In addition, there is a possibility that direct contact could occur with live parts if the ground and live wires have been switched or if the ground wire has been interrupted – these two events could also cause current to pass through the human body. All loads and system parts in an FI
protective circuit must be grounded.
Earth Leakage Circuit Breakers are sensitive to pulsating DC currents according to the requirements of DIN EN 610081/DIN VDE 0664 Part 10 and they are marked with the
symbol. These standards include tests with sine wave form
AC fault currents along with DC fault currents, which become zero during one period of the line frequency. These fault
currents become more and more common due to the increased use of electronic equipment in residual and industrial
applications.
In addition, the FI’s are pulse current resistant and they withstand a prospective short circuit current of 10 kA when protected by a properly sized back-up fuse. The
symbol indicates this rating.
FI’s are equipped with a test button. By pressing this button, the device simulates an artificial fault current, which causes
the FI to trip. It is recommended to test the functionality of the FI by pressing the test button after the initial installation
and every six months thereafter. Depending on the application, other standards (e.g. Accident Prevention Standard)
might have different test interval procedure recommendations. The minimum voltage requirement for the test button to
work is 110 V AC.
