Name: _________________________________________ Date: ___________ Per: ____ Inner Earth Model – by you Due: ______________ - if you turn it in after this date, it will be considered LATE (25% discount on your grade). You will present your project to the class on ____________________ Description: Your objective is to create a 3-Dimensional model of the earth that shows the composition of the inner earth and the relative thickness of each layer. 3-D means it is not flat like a piece of paper. Each layer should be labeled with its name and thickness (both actual and how thick it is on your model). Materials: NO STYROFOAM BALLS. You need to use at least three different materials to represent the layers. Try to use what you already have around your home. Be creative! What you turn in: 1. Pages 14-3 & 14-4 completed. 2. Your model with your name on it. 3. Grading: Use the tables below to make sure you included everything in your model. You might want to have a friend or parent "grade" your project to see if you need to change anything. Points Self Teacher Possible Score Score Criteria 1 Inner Core represented & labeled (see above) 1 2 Outer Core represented & labeled 1 3 Mantle represented & labeled 1 4 Crust represented & labeled 1 5 Three different materials used for the layers 3 6 Relative thickness of the layers on the model corresponds to actual thickness of these layers in the earth (For example, the thickest layer on your model is also the thickest layer of the planet earth). 4 7 Questions "1" & “2” answered accurately in complete sentences 2 X Extra Credit: model accurately shows features of the inner earth not discussed in class. Total Points: 2 max 13 Presentation Scoring Guide Points Teacher Possible Score Criteria 1 You speak clearly and use enough volume so that everyone in the classroom can hear and understand you. 2 2 You make eye contact with the audience during most of your presentation 2 3 You describe each layer of your model (what you used & what it represents). 1 4 You describe how your model is different than the inner earth. 2 Total Points: Page 14 - 1 7 Name: _________________________________________ Date: ___________ Per: ____ Thickness on Earth Layer Crust 5-70 km Mantle 2900 km Outer Core 2300 km Inner Core 1200 km Thickness on Model Project Plan: When: Materials: How is this layer shown on your model? cm Where: Sketch (w/ labels): Reflection Questions – use complete sentences and science words. 1. Describe how your model is similar to the inner earth. 2 sentence minimum. 2. Describe how your model is different from the inner earth. 2 sentence minimum. Use p14-2 or other information you found.
