Artículos – Articles
Articles are those little words in English that come before the nouns. They communicate
information about amounts.
the
a
some
But articles are a little more complicated in Spanish. 
Indefinite Articles
English has two – A and SOME
Spanish has four…and again, which one you use depends on the gender of the noun, and
whether or not it is singular or plural.
You use an indefinite article when it doesn’t matter which one of a group of things you are
referring to.
Indefinite articles
masculine
feminine
singular
un
una
plural
unos
unas
Práctica. Insert the indefinite articles. Hint: Words that end with “ión” are usually feminine
in gender.
1. ___chica
4. _____libros
7. _______bandera
2. ___doctora
5. _____ cuaderno
8. _______apartamento
3. ____señor
6. _____ maestro
9. _______ canción
Definite Articles
English has one definite article…THE.
Spanish has four…and which one you use depends on the gender of the noun, and whether or
not it is singular (one) or plural (more than one). They ALL mean “THE.”
You use definite articles when you want others to understand exactly which item you mean.
Definite articles
masculine
feminine
singular
el
la
plural
los
las
You can usually figure out which definite article to use by looking at the end of the noun.
Práctica. Insert the definite articles:
1. ____chica
4. _____libros
7. ______ bandera
2. ____doctora
5. _____ cuaderno
8. ______apartamento
3. ____señor
6. _____ maestro
9. ______plumas
Información Gramatical To make Spanish nouns plural, add –s to words that end in
vowels, and add –es to words that end in consonants.
Información Cultural….
In Spanish, when you refer to a profession, you only use an article when you are talking
about a specific person’s profession.
Ex….She is a teacher
She is THE Spanish teacher
Ella es maestra
Ella es LA maestra de español
Also, when speaking or writing ABOUT someone with a title, you must use the definite
article in front of their name.
Ex…..La Señora King es una de las maestras de español.
