ANNUAL REPORT 2011–2012
WE BELIEVE IN YOU.
HERE ARE OUR RESOURCES,
OUR MONEY, OUR
KNOWLEDGE, OUR WISDOM,
AND OUR HANDS TO HELP.
DEAR FRIENDS,
We believe in you. Our Board alumna Maria Sirois spoke these words
in our 10th anniversary video, and they are even more meaningful five
years later.
Kate Kane
Board President
Carla Oleska
Chief Executive Officer
We believe in our grantee partners and the tireless work they do and the
services they provide. Their work to advance the lives of women and
girls has produced phenomenal results: from educational success to
financial literacy to developing the courage to leave an abusive situation,
women’s lives have been changed dramatically. And as we know, when
women’s lives are changed so are the lives of their families.
We believe in the most underutilized resource in this country: women’s
leadership. Our Leadership Institute for Political and Public Impact is
now in its third year. The results are in, and it is a tremendous success.
The Institute has created a growing network of women leaders across the
four counties of western Massachusetts. It is also creating a bridge with
the eastern region of the state.
We believe in the power of linking arms with women of the world. This
year we participated in a U.S. State Department exchange with women
from Brazil. As one of the host sites, we had guests for two weeks last
spring and in turn sent one of our interns to Brazil in July. We are now
in the second round of hosting, and we know that new opportunities
will continue for strengthening these relationships.
Women’s Fund of Western Massachusetts Staff
Julie Kumble, Director of Grants and Programs
Julie Holt, Office Manager
Claudia Pazmany, Director of Development
You, our donors believe in the mission of WFWM. You support our
annual fund; you establish legacy gifts to ensure this mission continues;
you attend our events to join in celebrating our impact.
Carla Oleska, Chief Executive Officer
Julie-Anne Stebbins, Corporate Liaison
Interns
Cynthia Staniszewski, Mount Holyoke College Community Based
Learning (CBL) Media and Communications Fellow
You, our volunteers believe in the work that happens behind the
scenes. From our Board of Directors to our event committees to our
professional development workshop providers, all of you share your time
and expertise with grace and generosity of spirit. The work couldn’t be
done without your hands.
Gabriella Jannotta, UMass Undergraduate Intern
We believe in you, and we thank you for your support, your time, your
efforts, your tenacity and your grace. As you will see in the following
pages—when we connect our donors, volunteers, grantees and women’s
leadership—everyone in our four counties benefits!
With our deep gratitude,
Kate Kane

2011
ANNUAL
CELEBRATION
Come as you are party!
Our Annual Celebration at the Log Cabin! In the face of the
October storm, we all decided that we needed to have
something to move us beyond our woes. Over 350 area guests
responded to Carla Oleska’s email:
The Log Cabin has power! The heat is on; the food is hot, the
coffee is fresh, and the bar is open. So yes, we will indeed gather
for our Annual Celebration on Wednesday as planned!
And that is just what we did! Our Mistress of Ceremonies
Kathy LeMay helped us welcome Jennifer Buffett, President
and Co-Chair of the New York based NoVo Foundation, a
renowned voice for women and girls across the globe. And we
honored our Ripple Effect Award recipients for 2012: Nikki
Perez of the Jump Start Program, Holyoke and Lauren PayneRiley of Railroad Street Youth Project, Great Barrington.
GRANTEE
PARTNERS
The Women’s Fund is proud to partner with sixteen grantee organizations
this year to advance social change. These organizations were chosen because
of their work to engage members of our communities in dialogue and action
and to ensure that people who are typically disregarded have a seat at the
decision-making table. They were selected for funding because not only
do they offer excellent social services, but they also work to change the
systems that support social injustice. We’re especially pleased that of our
sixteen grantees, six are organizations that are new recipients of a Women’s
Fund grant.
We need organizations like the WFWM to be talking about gender based
inequity, mobilizing forces for change, and to gather the resources to
fund the services and programs we need – so thank you Women’s Fund!
—Janis Broderick, Elizabeth Freeman Center
The WFWM pays attention to where the real needs are. WFWM is
aligned with volunteers, supporters, activists, and their board to get to
know its grantees; it makes the link between donors and grantees.
—Jane Burke, Flying Cloud Institute
The WFWM is approachable, and has a wonderful understanding of
women’s needs.

PARTICIPANTS
LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE
FOR
POLITICAL & PUBLIC IMPACT
35 women were accepted into LIPPI this year, participating in what
is fast becoming known as the women’s leadership training program
in the region. Through a year-long program, LIPPI equips women to
become civic and professional leaders, to impact policy on the local,
state and national levels, and to seek and hold on to elected positions.
Focusing on areas such as policy-making, campaign management,
fundraising, board leadership, and running for office, LIPPI gives
women the tools, confidence and contacts they need to become
political and professional leaders. By training women in the nuts and
bolts of all these skills, we aim to advance social change for a more
equitable and just society.
I think LIPPI gets it that we need to have a new paradigm shift for
civic leadership and women have to be more than just conveners at
the table, we have to be social, transformational leaders.
—Camille Butterfield Elliot
LIPPI wasn’t just a gift; it was a stimulus package for me. It rekindled
my confidence. It gave me a sense of camaraderie and belonging
with women and it sanctioned the pursuit of power.
—Ellen Spring
WE ARE EACH
OTHER’S BEST
RESOURCE
WFWM Goes Global
This year, the Women’s Fund partnered with the Amherstbased organization, the Institute for Training and Development, through a U.S. State Department-funded program
focusing on cultural and leadership exchange between
Brazilian and American women. As one of the partnering
organizations, the Women’s Fund hosted two Brazilian
women in April for two weeks and in July, our Mount
Holyoke College intern Cynthia Staniszewski travelled to
Brazil for a deep learning experience and exchange.
Brazilian participants with local trainers at the LIPPI training
session on campaign organizing. Left to right: Manoela Wendler
Fernandes; Julie Hooks, Director of Institute for Training and
Development; Rosangela Cristina De Souza O’Neil; Elizabeth Silver,
Mary Clare Higgins, LIPPI trainers; Julia Gladis Lacerda Arruda;
Valeria De Cassia Lopes; Nara Regina Franco De andrade; Haydee
Lamberty Rodriguez (2010 LIPPI graduate)
The exchange is being repeated this fall and into 2013, this
time exploring ways to offer aspects of our Leadership
Institute (LIPPI) to our new partners. And we have much to
learn from a country that has elected their first woman
president! We know that women’s issues transcend culture
and geography, and this prestigious partnership has allowed
us to explore those issues deeply . . . while making wonderful
new friends!
What I learned was that in the United States and Brazil, providing training is essential in improving women's
self-esteem and confidence and for raising the next generation of boys and girls to see parity as a norm. We
are each other’s best resource—I saw many incredible role models who were building awareness, drafting
and supporting policy and creating systemic change with few resources.

JOAN’S CIRCLE OF FRIENDS
My joy in the scale and scope of our vision is immense.
—Joan Hastings, Board Alumna
A LEGACY SOCIETY IS BORN
In November 2010 we lost Joan Hastings, board alumna and long-time supporter who is credited with writing the first
check to the Fund. Joan hoped to stir in women what was stirred in her by supporting the Women’s Fund—that a
community of caring, intelligent, diverse women, interested in providing opportunities for others and for each other can
do it! In this spirit we have chosen to name our legacy society Joan’s Circle of Friends. Thank you Joan.
In April 2012 a gathering of board, board alumnae and early supporters was held to launch Joan’s Circle of Friends.
We thank Michele Megas-Ditomassi and her husband George for hosting this warm gathering. We proudly introduce
our first Joan’s Circle of Friends who have made the support of women and girls a priority in their legacy planning:
