PROGRAM NOTES
Ron Nelson's home, deeply shadowed by the mountain to the east looks out over Aspen and down valley. The hot-air balloons are up ... the western
range aglow. After a while, the sun clears the edge and suddenly it's morning! Fanfare For The Hour Of Sunrise was commissioned by the Aspen
Music Festival in celebration of its 40th anniversary and premiered there in 1989. This work was inspired by the unique Aspen sunrises. (Ron
Neslon, 1989).
Morten Lauridsen is a long time faculty member of the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California. 0 Magnum Mysterium
("0 Great Mystery") has become one of the world's most performed and recorded compositions. About his setting, Lauridsen writes, "For centuries,
composers have been inspired by the beautiful '0 Magnum Mysterium' text with its depiction of the birth of the new-born King amongst the lowly
animals and shepherds. This affirmation of God's grace to the meek and the adoration of the Blessed Virgin are celebrated in my setting through a
quiet song of profound inner joy." H. Robert Reynolds has arranged the symphonic wind version of this choral work with the approval and
appreciation of the composer.
Karel Husa's Concertino for Piano and Wind Ensemble is a version of an earlier work, Concertino for Piano and Orchestra. Husa composed this
work in Paris in 1949 and was premiered in Brussels, Belgium by the French pianist Helene Boschi and the Grand Orchestre Symphonique,
conducted by Daniel Sternefled. The Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, commissioned the wind ensemble version and was
first performed at the College Band Directors National Association Conference in Orlando January 27, 1984 by the University of Ventral Florida
Wind Ensemble with the composer conducting. Notes taken with permission from the Illinois State University Wind Ensemble concert notes,
November 17, 2005.
Frank Ticheli is an American composer, educator, and conductor of wind band music. Angels in the Architecture was commissioned by Kingsway
International and received its premier performance at the Sydney Opera House on July 6, 2008. The work unfolds a dramatic conflict between the
two extremes of human existence- one divine, the other evil.
John William's is known as one of the worlds most prolific composers and conductors of film scores and symphonic literature. Second only to
Walk Disney for the most nominated person in history from the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Williams has received
five Academy Awards with forty-five nominations." ln 1993, I led the Boston Pops Orchestra on a tour of Japan where the orchestra has played
many times for wonderfully friendly and enthusiastic audiences. That particular tour was nearly contemporaneous with the wedding of Crown
Prince Naruhito and Masako Owada, and I thought our concerts would present a good opportunity to celebrate the event by offering a fanfare
written especially for these concerts."- John Williams
Anthony LaBounty is an Associate Professor of Music at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Sharakan is an original composition for wind
orchestra incorporating the use of original themes to convey simple yet inspiring imagery unique to the Armenian worship tradition. A sharakan
is a canonic hymn from the Armenian Church liturgy- essentially, a prayer in song form. One authentic ritual integrant borrowed for use in this
work is the Armenian phrase "Der Voghormia" ("Lord Have Mercy"). The rhythmic construct of the phrase Der Vog-hor-mi-a is solemnly
referenced throughout. Sharakan is lovingly written to honor Dr. Harry Begian, esteemed musician, conductor, mentor, friend, Professor
Emeritus, University of illinois Bands, Past-President and Honorary Life Member of the American Bandmasters Association, and was
commissioned by Thomas Leslie for the UNLV Wind Orchestra. The composition was completed in June 2010 with the world premiere
performed in Las Vegas by the UNLV Wind Orchestra on November 17, 2010 with Professor Leslie conducting.
Carolyn Bremer's Early Light was written for the Oklahoma City Philharmonic receiving its premiere performance in July 1995 and was later
transcribed for wind band in 1999. The material is largely derived from The Star Spangled Banner. Bremer, a passionate baseball fan since
childhood, drew upon her feelings of happy anticipation at hearing the anthem played before ball games when writing her piece. The slapstick
heard near the end echoes the crack of the bat on a long home run. Bremer is currently the Professor and Area Director of Composition and
Theory, and Associate Department Chair of The Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University Long Beach. otes taken from
Published score. Pembroke Music Co., 1999.
Pietro Mascagni is one of the most important Italian composers of the turn of the 20th century. The formidable success of his first masterpiece
in 1890, Cavalleria Rusticana, unfortunately eluded many of his following works. Mascagni wrote 15 operas, an operetta, several beautiful
orchestra and choral works, as well as songs and piano music. The "Intermezzo" from Guglielmo Ratcliff is a lush lyrical piece, most recently
used in Martin Scorsese' s film Raging Bull. This emotional work was transcribed by Professor Suzuki in 1997, and later revised in 2002 .

Thomas Powell Knox was born in Danville, Illinois in 1937. As a young boy, he heard the U.S. Marine Band on tour and he decided he wanted
to play in that band. He majored in music, studying trumpet and comet, at the University oflllinois, which is considered to be the birthplace of
college band music. In 1961 , he joined the Marine Band as a trumpeter, moving to the arranging staff in 1966. The Marine Band's library
contains 263 Knox arrangements for concert band, brass choir, string orchestra, wind ensembles, chorus, solo voice, and dance band. Based on a
number of nautical songs and sea chanties, Sea Songs was written for the 350'h anniversary of the city of Boston and was premiered there by the
US Marine Band in May 1980. Notable among the songs are twelve variations of "Drunken Sailor." Also heard is " 0 Shenandoah," which
originated as a river chanty and became popular with sea-going crews in the early 1800s. Stehle, Roy. "Thomas Powell Knox."

John Philip Sousa was born in Washington D. C. on Nov. 6, 1854. Sousa, known as the ''March King," ranks among the most famous
American composers and conductors. On December 25, 1896 he composed The Stars and Stripes Forever, the official march of the United
States of America. He died on March 6, 1932 in Reading, Pennsylvania and is buried in the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D.C. The
Directorate was written in 1884 and exhibits the artistry and flair of the classic Sousa style. "John Philip Sousa."
