THE PASTOR’S DESK………...
My Dear People,
Shaun Usher shared this lovely story in his book Letters of Note:
A few years ago, a New York City English teacher challenged her high school students to write a letter to their
favorite author and invite him or her to visit the school. Five students wrote to Kurt Vonnegut, the author of
such classic novels as Slaughterhouse-Five and Breakfast of Champions. The author responded. He
thanked the students for their warm letter but, at the age of 84, he no longer made public appearances “because
now I resemble nothing so much as an iguana.” (Vonnegut died a short time later, in 2007).
But he offered them this advice: “Practice any art — music, singing, dancing, acting, drawing, sculpting, poetry, fiction, essays, reportage — no matter how well or badly, not to get money or fame, but to experience
becoming, to find out what’s inside you, to make your soul grow. Seriously! I mean start right now, do art
and do it for the rest of your lives. Draw a funny or nice picture of your teacher and give it to her. Dance
home after school, and sing in the shower, and on and on. Make a face in your mashed potatoes.”
Then Vonnegut gave the students an assignment, “and I hope your teacher will flunk you if you don’t do it:
Write a six-line poem about anything, but rhymed… Make it as good as you possibly can. But don’t tell anybody what you’re doing. Don’t show it or recite it to anybody, not even your girlfriend or parents or whatever…”
“Tear it up into teeny-weeny pieces and discard them into widely separated trash receptacles. You will find
that you have already been gloriously rewarded for your poem. You have experienced becoming, learned a lot
more about what’s inside you, and you have made your soul grow. God bless you all! Kurt Vonnegut.”
In our Gospel today, Jesus tells us “...do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your
body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?”
In other words, you can say that Jesus’ “homework assignment” is parallel to the one that Kurt Vonnegut gave
to those students. Our Lord is asking us to “make our souls grow” by making time in our daily life for generosity, forgiveness, peace, faith, and love.
The quote is not new with me, I’m sure you have heard it before, but it is true: we can become so absorbed in
pursuing the elements of a life-style that we neglect the necessities in living a life — a life of meaning, and
purpose, of faith and joy.
As we look ahead to Ash Wednesday this week, resolve to make this the best Lent ever by helping your soul to
“grow.” You can write a love letter to God about what is happening in your life. You can unplug from the
world and the technology and spend some time in prayer, reading Scriptures, going for a walk, reading to a
child, or re-connecting with someone you have lost touch with.
It is a great Lenten resolution for all of us — what can I do this Lent to cooperate with God’s grace in my life
and to help my soul to grow?
A blessed and holy Lent to each and every one of you!
Sincerely yours, in Our Lord,

preocupemos. Él no dice: “No coman. No cocinen. No
compren ropa”. Él dice: “No te preocupes”.
necesitamos (Mateo 6:32). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Our Parish Tithe this week will go to St. Peter Church in Aurora, Illinois, to help them provide religion
classes for their needy students.
TITHING TEACHES: Tithing teaches the happy virtue of gratitude. We tend to think of ourselves as
“selfmade.” We forget that all we have, we have received. Tithing changes the attitude too, for tithing is an
acknowledgement that “it is God that hath made us and not we ourselves.” (Psalm 100:3). The person who
tithes is saying, “Thank you” to God for health, food, family, love and life.
