Ethnicity— You have a greater risk for CVD and stroke if you are of African or Asian descent. Age— As you age CVD becomes more common. With age the heart becomes less efficient. Men are at greater risk of heart disease when compared to a pre-menopausal woman. Women past menopause are at a similar risk to a man. Risk Factors you CAN do something about: Tobacco Use— Female smokers are at a higher risk. Quitting for 15 years and longer puts you at equal risk as a non-smoker. Blood Pressure— (BP) Having a BP reading of more than 140/90mmHg is considered high BP. Having high BP is the leading cause of Cardiovascular Disease in the world. Having high BP increases your chance of developing diabetes. High Cholesterol— Lowering your blood cholesterol reduces the risk of heart disease. Overweight and Obesity— Excess weight is related to cardiovascular risk factors like high blood pressure and diabetes. Your BMI (Body Mass Index) should be within 18.5kg/m2—24.9kg/m2. (This can be calculated by your physician). Physical Inactivity— Having less than 150 minutes of moderate activity per week or less than 60 minutes of vigorous activity per week, can increase your risk of heart disease. Being inactive is the 4th leading cause of cardiovascular disease. Diabetes— Having diabetes doubles your risk for having a stroke. Cardiovascular disease causes 60% of all deaths in people with diabetes. Continued Healthy Tips from the Health Home … Continued Are you at Risk for Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke? Unhealthy Diet— Consuming high levels of saturated fat, trans-fat, and salt are linked to CVD and strokes. Consuming adequate fruit and vegetables reduces risk for CVD. Alcohol— Heavy drinking can hurt your heart increasing chance of stroke. The more risk factors you have, the greater chance you have of getting Cardiovascular (Heart) Disease (CVD) or, having a Stroke. Facts You Should Know: 1. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop? 2. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? 3. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred or strange? 4. If you observe any of these signs, call 9-1-1 immediately! 1 in 3 adults live with Cardiovascular Disease. Having a relative with heart disease increases your chances of getting it. African Americans are more likely than other racial or ethnic groups to have high blood pressure.
